Has anyone heard if Nokia has plans to (finally) introduce some clamshell form factor phones in markets other than Japan (saw a news clip yesterday with Nokia clamshell sold in Japan)?

If not, have your heard their reasoning why? Do they want to try and differentiate from rest of the manufacturers and dominate the candy bar shaped phones' market or what is the logic (if any)?

I'm not aware of any specific models in development, but I figure they must be working on something.

The Nokia phones you would have seen are very old phones, made around 2000. Nokia didn't make these themselves, they were actually made by Sharp for Nokia, who then sold them for the operator J-Phone (which is now Vodafone incidentally). These phones were called J-NM01 and J-NM02.
Nokia only had two clamshell phones made for them in Japan, and they also had a clamshell phone for Korea called the Nokia 8587, which you can find more info about at www.nokia-asia.com . I'm betting they didn't make this phone either, but I don't know for sure. =P

If Nokia are going to make a new clamshell phone, history shows that it'll likely only be for the Asian markets, where it's known that clamshell phones there are much more popular than candy bar phones.

Nokia had a folder in the Korean market until recently, too. Can't remember who made it for them. Was just a rebadged phone.

I'll show my lack of knowledge here and say that I only remember the old old old Nokia 252. I, too, have wondered why Nokia has not released a flip phone over here. Our market is fairly saturated as it is right now with flip phones. Nokia seems to a fairly good grasp on the 'candy bar' market.

It's just my opinion, but Moto candy bars are just plain horrible, (ugh..Cxxx series, Nuff said) Most SE candy bars are plagued (sp) with software slowdown and to some extent reception problems.

Right now I'm using a 6610 and it's probably the better phone I've used in the past six months...Much better than the S105 and S205 I've used, better than the T720i and better than the T300 and T68i I have used (Note: Bluetooth was not a factor for me)

Again this is just opinion...please be kind...

i think they should make some clamshell phones for US. i saw the japanese nokia phones and they're real nice. if they made one and it was decent, then i'll probably get it.

I agree, I think they'd be able to come up with some nice clamshell designs if they tried. They'd be much more productive than some of those stupid 'innovative' designs they come up with, like the 7600 or the 5510.

LOL maybe the production cost for candybar shape is more cheaper and for Nokia it's harder to remodeled in different cases for Clamshell LOL

cos just look at those Series 40 it's all basically the same with minor changes at the cases so they produce same all internal parts and remodeled the outside

with Clamshell they need to fixed certain parts in the internal so it' kind of harder to remodeled it

well this is just my thought LOL:D
