Can I use the A840 as a modem but use the blue tooth so I don't need any cables. If so What are the speeds like. Faster than a phoneline right? but not as fast as cable or even adsl for that matter.

I dont know about that phone. Click on it in my bluetooth places and see available services andif it has Dial Up Networking then voila it will work.
You cannot compare GPRS to dsl or ADSL. It just wouldnt be fair!

Theorically, it won't. A phoneline modem goes "theorically" at speeds of 56Kb/s while GPRS goes at 40.3(or so)Kb/s.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

if a modem were to get 56k all the time or lots of the time then every one would ditch cable and adsl t1 etc. 56k is fast but the goverment regulates us to get that speed.
Think adls/dls/t1/t3 all go threw a phone line.
so is cdma1x only like 40kbps. Is that how I would use it as a modem but hte gprs part of it. I thought I just go threw the cdma1x to connect to the net.
I hook the phone up to the computer as a modem. What should I expect you know the specs of the motorola phone a840 and v720.

I use that for my daily internet. It gets the work done. Nothing magical though, But there are bandwith problems here In India so cant say about there though (Where ever you are !)

I also use it as my daily internet connection. I know it's not THAT fast, but it works.
I said Theorically, because over here, and I think a lot of places else, it only goes at 45 Kb/s or so. I live in Panama, a small central-america country, still in ways of global development.
Can you believe that over here the most advanced phones are the Motorola V600 and the Sony Ericsson T616?! And they have just arrived like less than a month ago! The first one costs $600 on Pre-Paid service and the second costs $400!
God, my country is slow!

Over here in my country, our CDMA2000 1xRTT network delivers speeds of 150Kb/s. Quite a lot over GPRS. Over here, and I think everywhere else, GPRS=40Kb/s.
I know a little bit of the Motorola A840 phone. Going to research it later. Do you mean the V710? I think that phone is going to be the ONE for me!:p I love it!
I don't understand your last question, though. :(

If you're in the middle of nowhere, but you are covered by your carrier's network there, sure you can get to download that stuff. Not so fast as ADSL and those broadband technologies, but decent enough. But I suggest you use CDMA 1xRTT instead of GPRS for doing that... A lot more faster.
I think Verizon supports CDMA 1xRTT. Though I don't live in the US. Care to ask anyone from up there?

I think yes since CDMA ONE isn't really used now... Too slow. V710 has CDMA 1xRTT. It's the same thing, just making it shorter.:p

talked to verizon. you get around 40k with bursts of more than 56k iv been told.
Remember phone line is limited from the goverment so you never really get 56k where as I do believe cdma1x is controlled by verizon and the towers there fore you get closer to 40k speed with the bursts. So the guy told me there are bursts a lot of times.
