It seems that the world has been waiting for this phone forever. I had a chance to review one of these little wonders for a week. With Bluetooth, a camera, and a MP3 player with a MMC card slot, it sure has a lot going for it.Posted: Nokia 6230 Review (http://www.mobileburn.com/review.jsp?Id=714&source=FORUMS)

Sorry I really can´t agree with you on the button aspect, my 6230 has great buttons, they feel so good, they react perfectly and are really comfortable to push...
Besides that, great review...

same here, the keypads are great! they are absolutely a gem, i woudnt exchange the keypads for the 3310, nor for the 6610, not even for the 6310i, and surely not for how SE has been implementing their keypads
not to be and AS$, and to start a flame, but it seems to me that for the lack thing to find as "cons" on the phone, i thought that you just have to make something out against the keypad... i can not also agree that it is not a better looking phone, coz it is absolutely sexy looking phone compared to other nokias maybe 2nd only to the 8910i... i think it is a bad judgement on your part about these things, just my 2 cents
Thanks for the review Michael
Couple of questions
is their a flight mode for phone, so you can listen to the mp3 player and maybe play java games on a plane?
can you listen to the mp3 player and play java games at the same time?
does the phone slow down when it is out of GSM reception? I ask this because I have a 7250 and when playing a java game it will freeze every now and then when I am on the underground in london, presumably as it tries to get reception. It would be very annoying to have mp3 tracks pausing every 10 seconds or so, would pretty much make the mp3 player useless to me as I'd only want it for when I am commuting
anyway thanks for the review, any chance of putting it head to head with these k700 soon?

Wow, I think it is much more likely that the keypad on the phone Michael tested:
1) was a bad individual, a Monday Phone :) If this is the case, you should really test the keypad of your sample before you buy it
or
2) had a feel that just is not to Michael's individual liking. Again, test it yourself and see what you think.
I don't think, based on the reviews etc on this site, that Michael would be so biased as to just come up with something to complain or one of those funny Nokia haters (a la Microsoft haters). :)

I am wondering, why would michael give this phone a "recommended" rating, ONLY BECAUSE of the keypads? Is a phone judged solely by ONE factor? If that is the case, then the 3650, and the SX-1... should be judged as "not recommended" at all, right? For the keypads on those takes some gettin-used-to from the start, and are even worse than that in a 6230.

Exactly! That's why I'm wondering....
complaining that the phone has poor RF, that's good. That the phone's screen is bad, that's also good. That the phone hangs or fails to connect to other devices, that's also a good complaint. But complaining that they keypad is bad?? mmmm..... that's lame, I think.
(sorry, I am not meaning to start a flame thread... I just dont agree with that final rating).
cheers!

Maybe one cannot fully compare the ratings accross phone types (e.g. fully recommended for a smart phone is not exactly the same as fully recommended for a more regular kind of phone) and even less over time (fully recommended for a phone 2 years ago is not the same as today). In any case, these reviews are not, luckily, science. :-)

For the keypads on those takes some gettin-used-to from the start, and are even worse than that in a 6230. Because you need to use the keypad to do just about anything on this phone. It is a major piece of any phone. And not being a smartphone, which has more to offer because of the ability to load applications, the keypad is more important. And the 3650 never would have gotten a highly recommended rating anyway, the keypad sucked that much.
As I said in the conclusion, if you like the keypad then consider the rating "Highly Recommended".
I can't put it any simpler than that. Of course those words mean nothing if nobody reads them, which certainly appears to be the case.
After having just read the thread on the review on Howard's forums, I am just about to shut this forum down and to hell with all of the world. I never liked forums. I like them much less after today.

Good day Michael. Just curious, which do you think has a better keypad, the Nokia 6610 or the Nokia 6230? Thanks.

To me many of the comments on Howard Forum are just hilarious, and hope that you Michael will think so too after some time.
Michael and rest of the crew: keep of the good, no, great work! I check Mobile Burn every day or several times a day because it is by far the best mobile phone site I have found.
And for the most part even the forum is more, hm.. adultlike, than most other forums.

Will the 6230 accept voice answer/reject commands (like most SE phones do) when used with a BT headset? I read in the review that voice commands can be assigned to a number of different functions, I just wondered if you could assign them to answer or reject calls?

I changed the conclusion in the story a bit. It is now "Highly Recommended *", with an explanation about the keypad.
Probably more fair considering so many people seem to like the keypad.
But I most certainly did not. As I said on Howard's site, it was enough to keep me from using the 6230 as my day to day phone.

Oh my, poor 6230, the innocent victim of a senseless drive by shooting... lol :D No, the keypad kept me from using it. But the fanboys of the world certainly don't endear me to it. But the SE fanboys are just as bad. Both accuse me of bias whenever I diss one of 'their' handsets.
I'm not a fanboy, but i have tended to stick with Nokia since my first one (3210).
I do rate your reviews highly in my decision making for my next phone.........my purchase of the 5510 2 years ago was due to your review and i was duely impressed.
So now i own a 7650, but i'm looking for a secondary phone. the 6230 is my current choice, and since it was released here last week, i've been looking for reviews to guide me.
i was abit disheartened by all the faults you found, and my heart sank even further when i saw your forum reply. i was really hoping to get this phone, solely for its FM and MP3 capabilities and its form factor. i look at it as the smartphone that actually never was. But i will try to test before i buy and see if I like it.
I know you realize that your reviews are influencial and can bring out all sorts of emotions from those who otherwise feel vastly different from yours. Dont give up on the forums, they are a good place for owners to share ideas, get feedback, info and all other usefull material.
Your site is one of the best in the industry and your personell are very good at their jobs, so you are bound to attract all sorts.
Just keep up to good work, and dont be too rigid with your views. :)
Excerpt from review
Pressing the number 5 on the keypad will not select the 5th/middle icon in the menu. Instead, it dials a 5. This means that if you want to get to the icon in the bottom right corner, you have to move right twice, and down twice (since it defaults to the upper left).
...
The icons should be linked to the keypad for quick access.
Is this only when using the grid layout or is just not a part of the UI anymore?

funny, i can do it and i never even knew about this feature before... i would liek to repeat that- on grid menu showing all the icons, just press deliberately any nos. say "5" and it will take you to the middle icon, the "gallery" and not only that it will also open the icon
just press it deliberately, just like when pressing the d pad, it has to be firmed and deliberate press on the key

I've had this phone for just over a week and been playing with my new toy on and off.
After having read Michaels review, I was amazed at how detailed it is. He is spot on, apart from the grid menu access.
I've had Nokia's ever since the 3210. Previous to that I had the Ericcson flip phone and prior to that the Motorola which I don't rememeber the numbers to. So I'm a Nokia fan.
My last phone was the 7210, so I know about keypads which are slightly unconventional. In Michaels defence I have to say that I agree with his opinion on the keypad. It has too much travel and the keys are pretty close. I was making a comment about the D-Pad to my brother who previously had the 6610 and he said that you couldn't use it to choose an option on the his 6610 where as you can on the 6230 and sometimes I press up or down when I want to press it to choose the option.
However, I must add that as with my 7210 (which nobody liked using because of the keypad), it only takes a little while to get used to the keypad and the phone ROCKS..
In Michaels case the guy has SQUILLIONS of phones as you can see from the other forum picture he posted. And of course when you're spoilt for choice you can't be arsed to use the one you find has a bad keypad. But if its the only phone you have, you use it and after a while it's not even an issue.
That's how I feel. SO.. in conclusion if you like the functions and everything else.. Don't be dis-heartened by what Michael has said about the keypad because as bad as it is.. It's prefectly fine after your fingers get used to it. Enjoy an excellent phone. LOVE THAT BLUETOOTH..

@all: There is an issue with Bluetooth Compatibility between the new Nokia Mobiles models: 6230, 6820, 6600 and hp iPAQ 19xx and 22xx series of Pocket PCs. This is being addressed by hp as it is an issue with the Pocket PC... in the meantime the people at Expansys have found a patch to fix this, the patch is in BETA and should be installed at your own risk.
Expansys Forum were the patch is originally from:
http://www.expansys.com/forumthread...ad=78&man=NOKIA
The Brighthand Forum has a download link:
http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=101907&perpage=20&pagenumber=4
If you want to wait for a patch from hp check this link:
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/handheldiPAQ/us/locate/105_5721.html
Hope this is helpful to people who have the iPAQ h19xx or h22xx and want to sucessfully use it via BT with the Nokia 6230 and other new Nokia Mobiles.

Aha. That explains it.
That's very strange to do it that way, but not as bad as what I thought. Since I was always taking my time and looking around, that 3 seconds was expired when I was first trying it, which led me to think that I had to use the joystick.

That's the same as every Nokia phone I've used; if you press the numbers within a certain time it accesses the menu functions. After that it dials the number instead. In one way I like being able to dial straight from the menu if I'm in a rush, but also like the way that on my dad's (and I'll soon have one) SPV E200, pressing a number at any time in the menu selects an item.
Have you played with the 3510? You said the keys feel as if they're sitting on rubber, which is what the 3510 feels like to me. Do the keys on the 6230 feel anything like on that phone?

I tried to use the N6230 (at a friend's shop):
Things I liked were:D:
the SCREEN very nice and crisp, and a joy to look at
the Phone's SIZE very pocketable and not heavy at all!
the MMC Expansion I was already thinking of what MP3s to carry around
the DESIGN I liked the 'clean lines' look, it felt very professional
Things I disliked were:(:
The D-PAD: IMO it is not a easy to navigate with this d-pad... Nokia should have stuck with the joystick (think N7650).
The BLUETOOTH: I have an hp iPAQ 2210 and it can't pair with the newer Nokia mobiles including the N6230 and I have not yet installed the patch (because it is BETA and not official!--people say it does work though) and so I have decided to wait for hp's offical patch (I don't know how much more I can wait--it's been months!).
So no new NOKIAs for me :(

The Joystick seems to have been only implemented for the Series 60 handsets, due to their broad navigation system and varied applications. Thus, the 6230 will not need that......though i agree they shoul add it in all their handsets, its just logical.
The pairing with the PDA is not the fault of the phone, the PDA OS just has to be updated to include the newer handsets.
So, the issues raised are really small and should to spoil your decision on the phone.:)

Yes am aware that the problem is with the Pocket PC however I still cannot buy it as I would not be able to use both devices to their full potential and that would be a shame. The N6230 is a nice phone and all... it's just I love my iPAQ (Pocket PC) more, and am not ready to install untested drivers yet, maybe when I am about to flash it with a new ROM I will give it a try:) Until then I'll be envious of all the comments (good or bad) re: the N6230 just because I can't get one... Good to hear all your comments on the phone down in South Africa. I just got it so still playing with all the little bits and bobs. I had the Samsung E700 before so it's a bit of a change.
I was wondering how to change the font colour on the display screen. Not the colour settings, the font colour that displays the menu, go to, names functions on the idle screen. I only get black and a dark background renders these menu functions unreadable. Cell info display is in the same colour. Is there any way to change this??

I'm still waiting for the price of the 6230 to come down a little more here in the Philippines. I think when the new batch of flip fones of nokia come out, the price of 6230 should go down also. I'm still a little undecided in buying this, since my 6610 still satisfy's all my needs.... but im leaning a bit more to buying it... just hope it gets cheaper... Ü

On what contract did you get it and where did you get it? How much did you pay for it? Im also in SA and i wanted to get it on Family Top up the other day but it was R1000 for it once off excluding the contract costs.

Ruler,
I paid R180 for the phone on Vodacom Talk 100s. Vodacom just screwing people at the mo because the phone is in high demand. The phone was supposed to be free on Weekender Plus and Talk 100 / 200. But they took ages (2 months after Cell C and MTN) to release the phone, and many people got on the waiting lists. Then they just jacked up the price of the first batch knowing that people would pay due to demand.
I suggest u wait a month and the price will drop dramatically. It's the phone of the moment, u just need a another model to replace it then u'll get it at a reasonalbe fee.

Yeah, i was going to get it at Metro at Vodaworld cause they told me it was going to cost R299 on Family Top Up. Then on tuesday when they got it they told me the price was R999. They told me however that its free on Weekender.
The prob is that i dont want Weekender i want Top up because its more pratical. Yeah im gana wait till the new price lists in September or else il just pay whatever they want because ive been waiting for it for SOOOO long!

I just received my new 6230, and I have problems setting the GPRS paramters with ATTWS.
I downloaded the mMode settings from the Nokia web site, but they do not work, neither do the MMS settings.
The e-mail setting do work.....
My phone came with preset GPRS from the far east. Is there a way the remove them - erase GPRS settings.... (in my previous SE Z600, I could just preess C and thes would delete settings).
any advise on how to make it work.... please.

Just got a 6230. Love it. According to the manual it supports AAC but I've tried copying over some AAC music files (.m4a) to the phone via bluetooth but it doesn't seem to want to accept them. Mp3 files are fine. Anyone else experience this problem?

.AAC are the backbones of .m4a files, more like .aacs are the raw version without any artist tags etc. So technically .m4a files are .aac files as they are just made from them (I believe).
[edit] However I think the phone has been made to read files only with the extention of .aac, even though they're pretty much the same thing...
Lemon

.m4a are 'unprotected' (ripped) AAC files:
http://the.taoofmac.com/space/AAC
I wonder if I just change the extension on the file to .aac would that work. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks anyway.

Yeah, it definitely won't work by just changing the extension. Might need to find some other method than iTunes (Mac OSX) to rip my files.

Hey I'm having some bugs with my 6230... The original onboard memo in the phone is 6mb and when I recoded 2mb of videos it says (Size: 6mb Free: 2mb and Used: 4mb in the memo status menu) but when i deleted 2mb of my recoded videos, the status shows Size: 4mb Free: 2mb Used: 2mb.... does anyone has this prob? Is there anyway to fix it? BTW mine running v4.28
I'm afraid its one of those bugs people pick up on. I'm sure theres a simple fix, since its a software glitch, but i cant help cos' i've never encountered it.
Read through the Nokia Phones forum here, you may find it has been discussed before and thus your solution would arrise.

finally bought a 6230, and i love it very much. no problems being detected so far. internal memory is around 7MB though, my firmware is 4.44.
I guess the only thing i didnt like abt it was that if i use a black background, almost everything else on the display screen gets covered up (except for signal and battery meter).
Other than that, its a great fone. have already tested bluetooth, infrared and GPRS already. Cant get the email application to work though, but i guess its more of not supported by our network i guess. If anybody here from the philippines got theirs to work, kindly inform me. Ü

mine is 256MB..it can hold around 50+ mp3's... which i think should be enough already for the battery life....

Actually, if you compress the MP3s even more, you can fit WAY more songs onto the memory card. I have a 256MB MMC myself (for my 3300) and using RealPlayer to compress the files to the most while keeping it stereo has enabled me to get about 70-80 songs while using only a half to two-thirds of the memory, albeit sacrificing sound quality. But to me, when it comes to multimedia, quantity goes over quality...

Just bought the blekin F8V9020-CNCT adapter so I could use my existing headsets and not buy new handsfree corded stuff. I love how 'little' I had to get to obtain the flexibility of using my old headsets.
What I'd now love to have is the same sized adapter but with the pinouts for a stereo earbud set so I can use my iPod earbuds for the mp3/audiobook files (or use a cassette adapter to play them through the car radio while commuting. I don't need a built-in mic (I can use the phone in speakphone mode) -- but I do need stereo.
Here's why for me: this phone is about perfect as a light-duty mp3 player, but we need some little gadgets to make it work with other adapters for flexibility. Using such an adapter would save me from having to tote my iPod around --- one less little orniment to carry.
I don't see ANYTHING in the U.S. market like this. I wrote Belkin asking if they would engineer such a thing. Has anyone here seen one?
And if they haven't, does anyone know the pinouts on the bottom of the phone for left/right channel? I guess I could mod this adapter if I knew what pins did what.
thx.

Well, there is a solution, but it involves a lot of different adaptors. For my 3300, I got a Belkin Nokia Pop-port adaptor for 2.5mm jacks (from BestBuy), then (I don't have this) you could get a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptor jack...then you're all set to use your own headphones or use the cassette adaptor thing!

The will work but it'll make the connection between the phone and the headphones very fragile.

True, but unless Nokia decides to make an authentic adaptor, which is unlikely, that's the only option as far as I know...

hey, how were u able to "compress" your mp3's? anybody also know how to "crop" or cut mp3's? lots of songs i'd want to use as ringtone or message tone, but the introductions just take too long...
recently had some problems wiht my 6230. there was a time that my fone could not read from my MMC and use the songs as ringtone. if i transferred the mp3 to my phones memory, it could be used as ringtone. Although i was able to use my media player to read from MMC and play the mp3's. after a few days, it suddenly became ok. i dont know why.... anybody encountered this problem?

Hi!
According to my experience, this problem happens if you have a 256mb or more MMC. I also came across with this problem on my 6230 (firmware 3.15). In addition to this, if you have a wallpaper stored on MMC, sometimes it doesn't appear on your screen and the screen is automatically reset to default wallpaper. I don't know whether these problems have been resolved in the newer firmware versions.

One issue I have with this phone is the loudspeaker controls for the MP3 player. With the headset attached there is the option to play music through the loudspeaker:
Menu >Media >Music Player >Options >Loudspeaker
but without the headset it is not available.
Strangely enough in the first few weeks of using the phone the loudspeaker option was available with or without the headset! im not sure if ive changed some other setting which has altered this. though i cant imagine that being the case.
now the ability to play through the loudspeaker without the headset attached is possible, but i have no control over it. i can turn on the MP3 player and it plays through the loudspeaker as if it were the default setting, but if i attach the headset and then remove it the loudspeaker will not be available. or other times i turn on the music player and i must have the headset attached to use the loudspeaker.
has anybody else noticed this behaviour? I bought my 6230 in Taiwan so it is a chinese model (running in english) if that is an issue.
thanks.

Did you stop the MP3 player before removing the headset? That happened with me with my 3300...but if I stopped the music then removed the headset, after pressing play it'd play through the loudspeaker.

Technically though, there have already been adaptors, ones that let you use your headphones and still have a microphone, but they have been homemade and the quality is questionable...still at least Nokia's listening to its customers.
Here's an example of the homemade ones:

i just tried it again. stopping the music or not stopping the music leaves me with no loudspeaker option after removing the headphones. yet tomorrow (without plugging in the headset at all) i will be able to play through the loudspeaker as if it were default...
maybe its something to do with an alarm?

in reference to the keypad issues with this phone, i could not agree more to the fact that it SUCKS. the faceplate rocks back and forth on the main phone housing after about a day of use and the buttons feel very loose and not secure. i used it about a week and stuck it back on the shelf. i can handle the lameness series 40 (i wanted a change from series 60) but the phone was built like ****. i have since gone back to series 60 and to my beloved 6620.

Actually, the size of the 6230 was a real winner over series 60. Ok, I like series 60 a lot, but I preferred the camera, size and weight of my 6230 more over my N-Gage. Still I think I made a good choice with the 6630 - now to get it unlocked...

I´ve purchased this great cellphone...I´ve read the reviews about SE K700I and this one here in Mobile Burn, but Nokia 6230 specifically does support MMC cards.
The keyboard isn´t the best ones...I´m having some trouble when pressing the "pad" key, Nokia would consider using a joystick instead...
The display is not the best one like most of Samsung I´ve seen, but it´s great.

No, I'd hate having a joystick...I've gotten used to the D-pad on most Nokias and so I'd rather not have it any other way. And as for the Samsung screens, while the screen maybe awesome, the company doesn't take advantage of it and the UI just makes the whole experience blase. Not that I'm saying I don't like it, I"m just saying they could make it more interesting. And I hate that everpresent status bar that is only WHITE! At least if it were flush or something...

I had my 6230 for almost a week now, I got it mainly because of it's mp3 capabilities. I even bought a 256 mb mmc to accomodate all my favorite songs. The problem is that the music player couldn't detect the music files in my MMC! I could only play my MP3s one by one, that's bull****!
Can anyone help me on this?
>>>
I always copy my music files directly in the root of my MMC card. If you do that, the Media player can play all songs instead of only one at the time.
DEViANT
04-23-2005, 11:46 AM
You can put the files anywhere so long as you use the Music Manager as part of the PC Suite and create a playlist first. Putting things in the root is fine but it means the phone takes a while to read the MMC and it's not so good for organisation and general phone management (though I still do it this way).

Meaning to take off the carrier lock that's on the phone initially....meaning without unlocking it you can't use any other SIM card but the carriers. For example, if I had a Vodafone locked phone, I couldn't use it on Orange or T-Mobile, etc...

I want to download all my contacts into the 6230.
I see that it can receive up to 1.000 people, with several phone numbers and addresses (mail, street, etc.), BUT UP TO WHAT THE MEMORY CAN HANDLE.
I have 800 people with an average of 2 phone numbers AND the street and number.
Does anybody knows if the phone would accept this much info?
Thanks in advance
