Out of PURE CURIOSITY, who owns a nokia communicator, or is planning to buy one in the near future? I'm curious cuz eg. 9210i costs $1.8k and with that you can get a high performance PC, if not a laptop.
Not that I'm saying communicators are bad, since they are mobile pocket-pc's and great devices, really.
but I was just curious who actually owns one?

I had a 9210 and I paid approximately $270 USD for it. I found it to be a bit lacking in speed and it's battery life was rubbish. It didn't support any of the new features like polyphonic ringtones and the keypad didn't support T9. I couldn't find any software for it so I just gave up and went back to Symbian 6.1 (N-Gage) which does most (no camera...) of what I need in a relatively small package. The 9500 doesn't look too bad, but then again there are plenty of cool phones coming out soon like the Panasonic X700, Nokia 7610, Samsung D710 so I guess we'll see what happens.

Yep, no joke, I got it from Ebay. I generally avoid buying phones new because I know if I have an accident with a brand new phone I'm only going to be really upset about it. I don't even think you can get the 9210(i) new anymore anyway.

i have a 9210i......it is a lil slow and when u compare it to a 9500 ... i would close my eyes and opt for a brand new 9500 on its release for a price upto 1250$ .... so that makes a brand new 9210i at about 650-750$ and if u are getting it with a pc for about 1800$ be sure that u r charged for both as a bundled price and neither comes free of cost...

I got a 9110i and had a 9210i But I didnt like it much no logic. But let me tell you it was a phone which was a class apart. People prescribe you in a different way when you use a 9xxx. Anyways its available for around 180-250 US$.. Here 2nd Hand.
Even the 7200 i just got costs 30,000 thats around 650US$
Love,

Well the 9110i is just for nostalgic reasons never actually use it but its fun to play with it once in a blue moon.

The 9-Series from Nokia never really attracted me. Even if I would normally need a phone like a 9210i for work, I don't have one.
I think they are good mobiles, and I will buy a 9500 when it comes out. Btw, 9210i are still being made in factory until June 2004.
You can get used 9210/9210i's here very cheap used. I was going to buy one, and if it was usable with the camera headset, i probably would have.

Well.. it's actually Mrs Dynamoo's 9210i that I borrow whenever I can get my hands on it.
I'm suprised about the battery life comments - this one lasts forever without a recharge.. the battery probably just needs replacing.
I've said before about the Communicator - it's not really a phone, it's a tiny Symbian based computer that happens to be a phone too. It's got a reasonable keyboard and a good screen, and it takes MMC memory cards, so it's pretty easy to transfer big chunks of data to and from a PC with a card reader. You can edit Microsoft Office documents on it, so it's a useful tiny alternative to a laptop.
Yeah, the list of what it *hasn't* got is pretty long. The most glaring thing it's missing is GPRS. Web browsing at 9600 bps is a bit sad, but on the other hand the 640 pixel wide screen does at least mean the pages are readable.
The 9500 looks pretty good to me, but I guess with all phones, it depends what your priorities are.

I have a 92xx series so I'll offer my opinion but first I better let you know it was an expense account item and I wouldnĄ't have put out that much of my own $$ for this item. I better also divulge I'm in the biz, and have been for close to 10 years, so that naturally has me look at a phone far more critically (and with the biases that come from being steeped in the technology) than the average consumer.
It is a great phone if you need a club to beat a mugger with. :-)
Display is big and looks good, given only 4K colors. However, that display makes a guy want to surf the web at 144kbs or better which isn't happening on this puppy. I got the unit about 1 year ago, and had about 3 GSM service providers tell me: "That thing's ancient. We don't support it. Yes, you can place a call using one of our sim's in that thing, but you won't be surfing the net!¨
I used it as my primary phone for about a week; it has been collecting dust since. It is handy for displaying images transferred from laptop using the irda (quite fast). Zoom and pan work well for large MapQuest bitmaps transferred onto the phone prior to jumping in the car.
I was surprised to see the 9500 only has a VGA camera - at THAT unit price? Good to see it is tri-band. I hate my 92xx is not tri-band. 9500's styling is nothing special. Glad to see they have solved the high-speed data connectivity limits that the 92xxx series had. MP3 and MPEG-4 are nicely added. Nice to now have 65k on the main display; the 128^2 external is a Nokia platform display and is NOT that impressive.
At this price, how about a megapixel zoom camera, and a 120x160 (or even better QCIF!) external TFT for picture-ID.
Now should we ask if the 9500 remains a tank suitable for fending off muggers?
They have reduced the weight only 9%
They INCREASED the width by 2 mm.
Length and width are so close to original, hardly a customer will notice.
Yes, a nice self-defense weapon.
That has me thinking about the fully 3G phones out there that are similar (or smaller in size), starting to have network support in some of the regions where 9500's will sell.
