Hi, iv got a nokia 7600 and realy want to put sum some mp3 files on it, but i also want some space for videos and stuff. The songs i have put on are from cds and they are an avearage of about 5-6 mb each!
This is too much and the most i have managed is 5. Is there anyway i can minimise my mp3 files or do u guys know how i can reduce the size of the mp3's?
I dont mind about the quality as long as it aint too bad.
Cheers
Use the Nokia Audio Manager to make AAC files, they are smaller than MP3s.

yes, mobile-optimised AAC files are only about 1.8-2mb for 3.5 min song... and htey sound great

Could anyone give me a step by step on how to do this?

Visit here http://www.dbpoweramp.com to get the conversion software and the AAC codec. This is pretty simple and it gives you total control over the bitrates, etc.

It does turn into AAC but you need to get the codec plugin:
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-mp4.htm

i downloaded the first codec on that page and i can still only do waves and compress mp3s

I think this is the one you want:
http://www.dbpoweramp.net/codecs/dMC-AAC-Codec.exe
Either way, it definitely works since a few of us on this site have been using it quite a lot. There ought to be a dropbox somewhere to AAC format, you pull it down and it lists like MP3, AAC, (other codecs installed), etc. Obviously if you find that (assuming that it what it is, I can't check easily on my laptop) then select AAC or whatever it is you want and it ought to do it. I'll check myself and confirm later but let me know how you get on.

it works like a charm thanks. but...
so i compress an mp3 file @ 160kbps @4071kb
and it turns into an mp3 file @ 128kbps @3232kb
then i compress the same mp3 file @ 160kbps @ 4071kb
to an aac file @ 128kbps now its 3233kb
the aac file is pretty much the same as the mp3 file and both are compressed... i don't get it. is the compressed aac better than the compressed mp3?
so i compress the original mp3 file @ 160kbps @ 4071kb
into an aac file @ 160kbps and now its 4040kb
not much difference again
please explain

You tell it the final bitrate you want. I got a 128kbit MP3 into a 48kbit (which sounded crap) AAC file. I'll check it on my desktop later on for you and let you know.

i know how the whole thing works i'm just telling you that a mp3 file and an aac file are pretty much the same size.

Obviously at the same bitrate they are the same size. It's simple math, a 4-minute file (240 seconds) will be 240 x 128kbits = 240 x 131,072bits = 3,932,160 bytes for all files which are encoded at 128kbit, whatever format is used.
The point is AAC is better sounding at the same bitrate as MP3, obviously not if you recode an MP3 into AAC but the point is a 128kbit MP3 will have similar quality to a 96kbit AAC (= 25% space saving), so you can happily convert a 128kbit MP3 into a 96kbit AAC and be done with it.
But anyway you got the software working now so you can use it as you wish, for me I prefer MP3 all the time, because it's far simpler.

thank you heaps dude :)
so i guess i can make the following statements?:
i turn the song xxx into a 128kbps mp3
i turn the song xxx into a 96kbps aac
the first option is larger but both have the same quality. is this correct?

Something like that, basically the quality is similar but you can't say for sure exactly how it compares. For example, Microsoft like to say WMA at 64kbit is as good as MP3 at 128kbit but in essence it's nothing like as good, in complex pieces, the WMA is full of distortion and encoding artefacts. At a guess I'd say you may even manage AAC at 64kbit with slight loss but somewhere between 80-96kbit might be better, it depends on how you want to trade off.

dMC-r10
to the following location
C:\Program Files\Illustrate\dBpowerAMP
then I installed an application called:
dMC-AAC-Codec
to the same location
and voila!

Excellent, thanks for letting me know :)
I might start using those as well, or I might try 80kbit ones too, to save some space on my phone.

Whn it gets to 10% it says MPEG-4-AAC technology has encountered a problem and needs to close. It then says codec error! Can u help?
Mainframe AI

well it happened to me at the first time and the message was something along the lines of "can't find the decoder file" after 10%
could you guys experiencing the error actually copy and paste the error note
