View Full Version : Chinese support on Nokia Series 60
How to enable Simplified Chinese and Tranditional Chinese supports on Nokia Series 60 phones?
I went to Nokia, wanting to purchase the 6600, but I was told by the sales guy that the local authority does not allows Chinese support in smartphones.
When asked about other Symbian phones, using SE P900 as example, the sales guy told me that SE P900 is a PDA phones, so it is allows to have Chinese.
Really can't believe such a stupid regulation exists, there is no reason for it. I thinks it must be something to do with Symbian or Nokia itself. Does anyone knows the real reason?
Lastly, which symbian phones that is selling in Singapore has Chinese support?

Just as expected, the Nokia sales person is trying to cover up the limitation of the 6600, :(
BTW, I was also told that all Nokia Symbian phones doesn't have native support for Chinese, is that true?
Where can I get Q9? Is it good? Will it cause problem to the phone as many 3rd party application does?
Thanks for the quick reply, I'm still looking forward to get that phone if there is an usuable solution, :)

Haha, well actually they will introduce chewing gum again, but you can only get it in a pharmacy with a prescription...
Here are a few things you cannot do here:
pick flowers
not flush the toilets
be a jehova's witness (crazy...)
walk around naked in your house
feed the birds
complain about the government
say what the government should do
smoke in a public place(im not too sure about this.)
smoke in an air-conditioned indoor room
spitting
Apparantly homosexuals are not allowed to live in this country.
If you are convicted of littering three times, you will have to clean the streets on Sundays with a bib on saying, "I am a litterer." This will then be broadcasted on the local news.
Capital punishment would be hanging
They cane you for any offences. These canes are soaked in alchohol and are made of ratan thorns to hook onto your skin...
10 years ago it was illegal for a guy to have long hair.
Please don't mix the Law and a regulation. Also, no matter how ridiculous it is, there is explanation, wether you agree to it or not.
However, with Nokia Symbian phones, I can't even think of one single reason for the regulation, so it should be Symbian, the phone or the manufacturer.
Thanks for the replies, I guess I have to drop the idea of buying the 6600, or any Nokia Symbian phones... :(

perhaps the reason for the regulation is that they want you to learn more english?
By limiting to smartphones? This is even more ridiculous...

Maybe Singapore finds Chinese on mobile devices unattractive
That will only affect Nokia packaging, does not qualify as a reason to regulate Chinese in smartphones. Like I mentioned, I think the Nokia sales person is not telling the truth.
Anyway, Nokia has Chinese in almost all series 40 phones, and it is one of the leader that makes Chinese SMS so popular in Singapore, it is very strange for such a sudden change of attitude.
BTW, all of my friends have exchange Chinese SMS before, I don't think it is not attractive in Singapore.

!!! my last 2 posts were jokes...
Did you tell those jokes to Nokia peoples?!
Maybe that's why Nokia smartphones does not have native support for Chinese, :)
BTW, Q9 is only an input method, it only works with whatever languages the phone supports. Any other solution?

I can guarranty that there is Chinese support on Series60. I've seen pics on threegmobile.net of 6600s with chinese.
All you gotta do is find a place where they can flash it with a chinese language software, and whala!
I never doubt that, I think Hong Kong, Taiwan and China use the Chinese version, and the Q9 site shows the Chinese version of 6600 too.
I prefer to have English software with Chinese supports, like most Series 40 and SE phones.
However, I'm willing to accept the Chinese version as long as it is fully supported from local Nokia, any suggestion?
Thanks.

It has something to do with the OS.
The complex series 60 OS would occupy too much memory if you put in multiple languages on it.
So as it is, they separated the Chinese and the English/Euro and English/Asia languages.
Symbian 60 Chinese is available. If you buy a 6600 in China it will be in Chinese but the OS wont do English. (It will still display English letters/programs/SMS).
If you live in Singapore, I saw some store selling the chinese 6600, albeit at cut throat prices.
Would be best if you have some friends/relatives in China who can buy you the phone.
To be exact, the OS is Symbian, it's the limitation of Nokia Series 60, not the OS.
I needs English more than Chinese, so an Chinese only version is also unacceptable.
Thank for the help everybody, I think I have to forget about 6600 and probably go for a O2 XPhone instead, currently waiting for the stock from M1.
PS: The local version of XPhone does not have Chinese too, but I have hack my English only Pocket PC to show Chinese, so I should have a 50% chances of hacking the XPhone to show Chinese and etc, :)
