Hey folks --

I'm considering the Nokia 6820 and one thing I notice is that is support EDGE but not GPRS. I also plan on traveling to Europe, and it is not clear to me if EDGE works in Europe. Does anyone know which providors support EDGE in Europe and what kind of coverage it has?

thanks!

Actually, reading through the 6820's manual, I see this:

Note that when you have selected GPRS as a data bearer, the phone uses EGPRS instead of GPRS if this is available in the network. You cannot select between EGPRS and GPRS but for some applications you may be able to select either GPRS or GSM data (CSD, Circuit Switched Data).

It sounds like EDGE (EGPRS) is backwards compatible with GPRS, so sounds like I will not have a problem with this phone. Am I correct?

cheers,

An EDGE phone will work in GPRS. You will be fine.

There are a couple of EDGE networks in Europe now, I believe, but I don't know where. They are few and far between, in any case.
