Read some good reviews around, isit a good phone??

Looks well nice, but whats battery time like? Heard you can get 2 days max out of it....?

It lacks blue tooth which ain;t really a problem as i;ve never used it in the past and probably won't use it in the future....

I had and still have one (but it's being sold). In short, great camera, beautiful screen and excellent sound reproduction but it's lacking in the features department. Software connectivity on the PC is poor and there are some bad things, like if you get a call or shut the phone you lose the message you are typing, or you can only install Java games over the net, etc. Battery life, about 2 days-ish depending on what you're doing. When I had it in the first week or so, I was always fiddling with it and the screen is a real killer, as is the loud sound output, so I got barely over a day then.

Yes, well that is part of the problem. Under Windows XP, the IR driver doesn't appear to work. So unless you have a cable or are running Windows 98/ME, don't expect it to work. Also Samsung's latest version doesn't actually work and is corrupt but they haven't bothered to fix it yet (to my knowledge). If you can get it to work then good for you, but if you can't it's a huge hassle - and I resent having to get a PC with Windows 98, just to use my new phone (that said, it is worth it for the pictures and for the beautiful polyphonic sound).

Well, um what's it for?

E700: VGA camera, great screen, nice design, good RF performance, best polyphonic ringtones on the market, clamshell

6220: good features, business-design, STN screen, CIF camera, good RF, Nokia-built, well-established

Basically choose the E700 if you're a fashion-victim (ok, a bit harsh, but if you choose style and fashion over functionality then go with the E700) otherwise choose the 6220. The VGA camera and screen on the E700 are pretty good too, of the things it has, it normally excels in them, but these things are cosmetic (like the phone) and the 6220 I think is generally more functional.

Thanks for the reply mate.

I like the 6220 design, looks very nice. I want a phone for personal/social use.

Im very much leaning towards the 6220. I really like the good camera on the E700 and nice screen. what is STN screen and CIf camera, is it really that bad?

Explain to me what those are. whats good RF?

I think ill choose the 6220, i think its just as fashionable.

Why is the 6220 generally more functional.

The 6220 radio i also like as i think id use it alot.

pls Reply,

cheers.

Sounds like you're set on the 6220 and with good reason, it's a more practical phone I'd say. The novelty of the E700 soon wears off.

STN screen = super-twist nematic or passive-matrix, whereas the E700 uses a TFD (thin-film diode) which is an active-matrix. Basically the active matrix has a higher refresh and much better colour reproduction and contrast compared to an STN. The E700 also uses a 65,536 colour display whereas the 6220 is only 4,096.

CIF (Common Interchange Format) camera is a lower resolution than VGA (Video Graphics Array). CIF = 352 x 288 pixels, VGA = 640 x 480 pixels.

Good RF - read as good signal quality, reception and ability to hold a signal, both phones are pretty equal.

I wouldn't so much call the 6220 fashionable, the E700 is definitely nicer but the 6220 is a bad choice by no means.

I think press and hold '#' (or maybe '*'?), anyway it activates silent mode which means no rings and no annoying sounds (apart from the camera shutter sound I think which you can hack the firmware and disable if it really irritates).

If you know what you are doing it's possible to change the firmware so the location in it with the camera sound is change to a null sound, i.e. a sound with zero data in it is played instead. Obviously this is a permanent hack and sometimes you want a sound to be played. I never did it nor needed to, but the reason it's there is because it's law in Korea I believe (where Samsung HQ is).
