another dumb Q: someone explain 3G

Yeah.. I feel noob right now, but I wanna know exactly what third Generation Phones (if thats exactly what it means) means.

3G third generation, the GSM CDMA thing we're all using is either 2G or 2.5G, the speeds of transmission was some 128kbps, and 3G is well healthy for 384kbps, so somewhat braodband speed, thus capable of doing video streaming. but all this stir we're all about to get is already a common thing in japan where they called it iMODE, i think back in 1997 or 1998 they already have phones with cameras, doing video streaming with their iMODEs already; now theres rumours the japs are doing something called 4G, which is well capable of doing 100mbs ...... how long we're gonna get to there??......... haigh....

So, now my questions go to, what 3g phones are available right now?? are they going to have to upgrade the towers or if you get a new handset (say one from japan that worked in the US) would that be sufficent to say your cool enough to be on 3G technology. Thanks for understanding my newbie ways...

not sure dat particular phone'll be compatible in U.S maybe it's blocked or locked, but 3G does support gsm, alotta networks and dunno bout CDMA, could checkout thou.... i think they do support.
not sure how they do the upgrades.... towers? i think its more of a phone hardware thing, i dun think we can upgrade our phones from 2Gs to 3Gs.... y not ask michael?

what does verizon use for there roaming same kind of network toweres right. cdma visaversa a gsm company when they roam only use gsm. I was thinkng with that new motorola duel network phone. Its not 3g but looks cool enough to do many things. And as for 3g phones Who needs one when you can do things like with the apple computer ichat av full 30fps video for free. I mean its more logical to do something like that than pay a nifty price for 3g I believe. Who knows.

Well that didn't really answer my questions as to what has to be upgraded for me to use a 3G phone. Anyon eelse know whats up? and what were you talking about with CDMA. CDMA networks are completly different than GSM.
