India Overtakes USA as Nokia's Second Largest Market

Nokia has announced that India has become the second largest market for Nokia in terms of sales, going past the USA in the quarter ended June 2007. Over the last three years, India has been gaining significant ground Year on Year moving from No 4 position in 2005 to No 3 position in 2006 and is today poised right behind China.

In another milestone, the company also announced that it has started exporting to 58 countries from its Sriperumbudur, Chennai manufacturing plant. The factory has now reached production volumes of 60 million handsets (August 2007) and is exporting half of its production to 58 countries across Middle East, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

The factory currently employs 4700 people, 70 percent of which are women. The Nokia Telecom Park has received an investment of US$500 million with seven global component manufacturers likely to generate in excess of 30,000 jobs when fully functional.

It is the fastest growing market in the world, what else do you expect with 19$ phones(not from nokia) and 1.2 cents voice calling (again not from nokia:D) and also not to forget over a billion people living here(definitely nothing to do with nokia:p)

Anyways the point is that more people adopting cellphones will eventually own a Nokia in India because of:
1. Very strong brand presence (rated the 4th most trusted company this year in India)
2. Higher resale value relative to other manufacturers
3. Who else can bombard the market with 50 new phones every year;)

No they dont, i've never used any myself but seen a lot of people with these 19$ phones and its got colour screens, fm tuner and stuff. They are quite decent really but even if they dont break i dont think they would be very long lasting

This is new for me. I have a friend whos from Mumbai, and everytime I see him, he's using a Sony Ericsson. SO I thought that it was big in India - I didn't realize that Nokia was more popular.

SE is more of a cult favourite. There are SE users that would never shift to Nokia but they form a minuscule %. What cemented nokia in the minds of the Indians was the uber sucessful 3310. though there were many phones before it. (I remember using a 1610) but this was the time when calling costs were drastically coming down and people were adopting cell phones like never before, many for the first time and 3310 was a sturdy, no nonsense handset which looked nice and was pocketable. I remember everyone, in every age group seemed to have one and snake was probably the most played game in India:p. Infact it was such a huge hit, Nokia manufactured that phone for the Indian market even though it was discontinued else where. From then on Nokia has almost become a mainstay in the Indian mobile industry. Which by todays report has become the fastest growing market in the world (http://investing.reuters.co.uk/news/articleinvesting.aspx?type=allBreakingNews&storyID=2007-08-25T072854Z_01_BOM204645_RTRIDST_0_INDIA-WIRELESS.XML), adding 8 million subscribers only in the month of July.

Ok....i dont dispute what you say but what does it have to do with the phone looking feminine
unless your trying to say that the mark of masculinity is going under a bus and surviving.... lol
