Nokia CP Ads Nokia Announces Product Advisory for BL-5C Battery

ESPOO, Finland, August 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Nokia (NYSE:NOK) today issued a product advisory for the Nokia-branded BL-5C battery manufactured by Matsu****a Battery Industrial Co., Ltd. of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006. This product advisory does not apply to any other Nokia-branded battery.

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/08/bl_5c.jpg

Nokia has identified that in very rare cases the Nokia-branded BL-5C batteries subject to the product advisory could potentially experience overheating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge. Nokia is working closely with Matsu****a and will be cooperating with relevant authorities to investigate this situation.

Nokia has several suppliers for BL-5C batteries who have collectively produced more than 300 million BL-5C batteries. This advisory applies only to the 46 million batteries manufactured by Matsu****a between December 2005 and November 2006, from which there have been approximately 100 incidents of overheating reported globally. No serious injuries or property damage have been reported.

Consumers with a BL-5C battery subject to this advisory should note that all of the approximately 100 incidents have occurred while charging the battery. According to Nokia's knowledge this issue does not affect any other use of the mobile device.

While the occurrences in the BL-5C batteries produced by Matsu****a in the time-period specified are very rare, concerned consumers can request a replacement for any BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory.

It is important to note that the BL-5C battery is not used in all Nokia products and that only a portion of the Nokia BL-5C batteries in use are subject to this advisory.

How to identify a BL-5C battery manufactured by Matsu****a during the relevant period:
In order to determine if a battery is subject to this advisory, it is necessary to remove the battery from the device. A Nokia battery will have "Nokia" and "BL-5C" printed on the front of the battery. On the reverse, the Nokia mark appears at the top and the battery identification number (consisting of 26 characters) is found at the bottom. Consumers should refer to this identification number to determine if their battery is among the batteries manufactured by Matsu****a between December 2005 and November 2006. A comparison of that number with those subject to this advisory will determine a consumer's ability to obtain a replacement free of charge.

Consumers should visit the website http://www.nokia.com/batteryreplacement

or contact their local Nokia call center.

About the BL-5C battery:
The BL-5C is one of 14 different battery models used in Nokia products. As with many of its components, Nokia has a multi-supplier strategy for batteries, including the BL-5C. Matsu****a is one of several suppliers Nokia has for the BL-5C battery.

'In very rare cases the Nokia-branded BL-5C batteries subject to the product advisory could potentially experience overheating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge,' Nokia said.

.... melting or warping (coz of excessive heat) is, I guess, more acceptable than the battery exploding.

this is disastrous.

I have an old 6680 that uses a BL-5C, but I haven't experienced any overheating of any kind. Maybe that advisory is right? That not all are affected?

LEAD: Gov't orders Nokia to report on Matsu****a battery accidents
Staff,Kyodo World Service
Aug 17, 2007

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry ordered Nokia Corp.'s Japan unit Friday to report by next Friday on details of a series of accidents involving Matsu****a Electric Industrial Co. lithium ion batteries used for Nokia mobile phones, ministry sources said.

Earlier in the day, the ministry called Nokia Japan President Tyler McGee to hear about overheating problems related to the batteries but judged that more detailed explanations were necessary, the sources said.

Major Finnish mobile phone company Nokia said earlier this week that approximately 46 million lithium ion batteries supplied by Matsu****a Battery Industrial Co., a Matsu****a subsidiary, for their phones could overheat, adding that they will replace them free of charge.

Nokia made the announcement after receiving reports of about 100 incidents of overheating.

Nokia procured the Matsu****a batteries through the Japanese unit.

Nokia: Matsu****a to Cover Battery Costs
Updated: 5:55 a.m. ET Aug. 24, 2007

HELSINKI, Finland - Nokia Corp. said Friday that Matsu****a Battery will meet all costs related to a warning earlier this month about faulty batteries.

The world's biggest mobile phone maker advised customers on Aug. 14 that up to 46 million batteries used in some of its handsets could pose a risk of overheating. The advisory applied to Nokia BL-5C batteries made by Matsu****a Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. between December 2005 and November 2006.

"Matsu****a Battery has agreed to cover the direct costs associated with the product advisory, including, among other things, logistics costs, call center costs, and replacement battery costs," Masatsugu Kondo, president of Matsu****a Battery, said in a statement issued by Nokia.

The Finnish company said that 100 incidents of overheating of the Matsu****a-made batteries had been reported worldwide, but that there had been no serious injuries or damage. All cases of overheating occurred during charging of phones, it said.

Nokia did not issue a recall of the batteries but said that it would replace any battery covered by the advisory.

Nokia said it will continue to cooperate with the Japanese battery maker.
