Hi guys, I've just picked up my N95 and I must say that I'm quite impressed, Maps especially brought a smile to my face once I (eventually) got a satellite lock. The only real downer of it is the battery life, but I'm not adverse to charging it every night. I just have a quick question that any help with would be much appreciated, I am looking to transfer some videos I have on my computer and watch them on my N95 during my long commutes, and was just wondering if anyone could recommend video encoder settings (or even a particular program or guide) that are optimised for the N95. Cheers.

Yes, I have a program called PS3 Video 9.

It has a crapload of N95 video formats to choose from. See screen shot below. I highlighted the part I'm talking about in red:

You should try Smartmovie (version 3.41 is the latest I think). I think it automaticaly adjusts to the screen resolution of the phone it's playing on? Movies are great on it - not choppy or slow, it's smooth moving. On the N95, if you find that your eyes are a little straining, just plug the phone to your TV, and adjust the view mode to 'portrait' in the smartmovie menu.

There's the "Nokia Video Manager" for "transferring your videos from your phone to your PC or vice versa – smoothly, efficiently, and with complete ease."

It turns videos into H.264 mp4 video for playback on the native player.

The lastest version is very stable now on devices that can rotate the screen (like N95/ N93, where as before it would crash)

If you have the memory, .divx/.avi files do not need conversion for the N95. I've found that extremely useful since most of the time, those files are already optimised and further conversion only makes the files bigger (if maintaining same quality)

The only files I would convert are those not already in a compatible format. I use "Total Video Converter". The free version just puts a watermark on your videos but other than that, an excellent converter considering it's free.

Converted files for viewing on the phone should be at a resolution of 320x240. For TV out, 640X480 (N95 has VGA tv out, output).

You can use this to convert ANY video format to most other video/sound formats (except wma/wmv).

If you know what you're doing, you can play around with the settings and make your own profiles for your N95 (Audio channels, codec, frame rate, bitrate volume, video codec, frame rate, bit rate, size and crop) for either optimised quality/size or whatever.

So the N95 can read DivX files? Is that for all S60 phones?

mmm... didn't know that. So you're saying that there's no need to convert avi and divx movie files anymore?

Thanks for the info. :)

Not natively. All S60 phones can play Divx files with a 3rd party application.

The second bit of my first post was in reference to oneclick's reply.

Yes. If you have Smartmovie, it will play your video as long as it's on the phone without any conversion.

Cheers guys for the help, I've tried a couple of the options and SmartMovie works best for me as their is no additional encoding required, important when you only computer is 8 years old. I'm happy with the picture on SmartMovie too, it looks good on the N95's beautiful screen. One question though, when I'm watching videos with bitrates of around 270-300 kbs and encoded in XVID, the audio and video slip slightly out of sync (especially in parts with fast movement) and it requires me to almost constantly rewind a second to match them up again, a little annoying. Can anyone suggest a solution?

Try to go to the 'options' menu in Smartmovie. There's an audio preroll time menu. Just play with it. Set it to -10 secs, then try a movie. If it gets worse, set to +10 then play a movie. Just set it to - or + until you get the video in sync with the sound.

Nah, its not really that sort of thing as the two start out in sync, it's only during fast moving sequences (which also causes the N95 to drop frames) that the video slips slightly behind. I'll try other videos and see what happens...
