pfingo is giving free 3 months trial for it's services and among them, the VoIP service pfingoTALK allows free pfingoTALK to pfingoTALK calls as well as free pfingoTALK to local land line calls through it's SIP gateway. I wanted to grab the opportunity to test the VoIP capability on my HP iPAQ 512, but there was a problem, it requires updated ROM version 1.08 that is not available online.

I waited for around 2 weeks, still no sign of new firmware online, so I went on to setup my phone with the original ROM, version 1.06. iPAQ 512 users have reported getting "No Service" with the original firmware, but surprisingly, I proceed smoothly without any problems.

As usual, I did the setup manually, which I do for almost everything on Windows Mobile devices. Within a few minutes, calls turn out loud and clear at both ends. I guess the problem is not the firmware but a lack of knowledge on Windows Mobile at pfingo side...

Anyway, iPAQ 512 users, following is the instruction below that I used to get my phone working with the pfingoTALK service without going through firmware upgrade or the HP iPAQ Setup Assistant. Hopefully, you can makes yours working too, :)

To begin, you will need need to register an account at http://www.pfingo.com. Next, you need a utility calls RAPICONFIG.EXE from Microsoft Windows Mobile SDKs. If you don't have the SDK, it can be download easily from the Net by searching with popular search engines. Then, use an editor to create the following XML files, save them in ASCII text encoding.

1st file is pfingoCODEC.xml, equivalent to CODEC.CAB provided by pfingo.

<wap-provisioningdoc>
<characteristic type="Registry">
<characteristic type="HKLM\COMM\RTC\Codec">
<parm name="PreferredAudioCodec" value="8" datatype="integer" />
<parm name="UsePreferredCodec" value="1" datatype="integer" />
</characteristic>
</characteristic>
</wap-provisioningdoc>

2nd file is pfingoTALK.xml, setup VoIP provision without using HP iPAQ Setup Assistant.

<wap-provisioningdoc>
<characteristic type="VoIP">
<parm name="SIPSettings"
value="<provision key='1232ab01' name='pfingoTALK'>
<provider name='pfingoTALK' />
<user account='3113xxxx' password='xxxxxx' uri='sip:3113xxxx@sip.pfingo.com' allowedauth='digest' />
<sipsrv addr='sip.pfingo.com' protocol='UDP' role='proxy'>
<session party='First' type='pc2pc' />
<session party='First' type='pc2ph' />
</sipsrv>
<sipsrv addr='sip.pfingo.com' protocol='UDP' role='registrar' />
</provision>"
/>
</characteristic>
</wap-provisioningdoc>

Finally, connects your phone to your computer through ActiveSync, open Command Prompt from Start Menu and run the following commands:

RAPICONFIG.EXE /P pfingoCODEC.xml
RAPICONFIG.EXE /P pfingoTALK.xml

Your phone is now ready and you can activate it by changing the Internet Calling setting. When set to "Whenever available", it would connects automatically to the service when connected to the Net. Your calls will route through the service and people can call you at your pfingoTALK number, ie. 3113xxxx.

Lastly, I think the method should work with all Windows Mobile 6 devices as long as the built-in VoIP function is not removed. If Internet Calling is missing on your device, you can try to download and install the SIP client at ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Hermes/WMXL_Support_Files/WM6VoIP.CAB. This is not tested though.

That's all. Enjoy! :)

Hello!

Great guide!

I tried it on my HP phone. Now it shows pFINGO Talk - No service. I am connected via USB to my laptop, which is connected to the internet at my work.

Can you please advise how to make my phone use the internet connection of the laptop? I think its possible - e.g. my PALM pilot (looong time ago) was able to use the desktops' internet once connected via bluetooth/USB cable.

Thanks!!

@danielkeder - install Windows Mobile Device Center for Vista or ActiveSync for XP/2000 on your PC and make sure the traffic isn't block by the local or office's firewall.

@emilija - ??? Can you post again in more detail?
