I’m a cranky: I feel a bit like I imagine a child would do if it was told that “in 4 days it is Christmas” but is then suddenly told “Christmas is delayed by ~6 weeks, deal with it, sucker”!
I have been waiting on the Nokia 6120 Classic for a while now, and when it eventually gets released in Denmark, will have waited for 3 months. The most annoying is that it was released in Finland just before the end of the 2nd quarter like it should, but apparently Nokia is having some kind of trouble producing enough, as the distributor is reporting that the phone will not be in stock until August the 17th (original estimate July 10th – I got the grim message from the dealer on July 6th). Still, Nokia continues to write on its Danish website that the phone will appear in shops in the 2nd quarter – it looks like Nokia is just stating the Finnish release date and then hoping no one will complain. It’s unfortunate for me (but fortunate for Nokia) that I can’t find any other phone I want other than the 6120 Classic. Other S60 phones are either too big (e.g. N95), too expensive (e.g. N95), or missing in the features department (e.g. E65 – no radio), or too slow (most S60 3rd ed. Non FP1 – including E65).
So I’ll wait – and just like Christmas eve, suddenly it is there and you get to play with you new toy.
But maybe I shouldn’t whine at all. I guess I’m just experiencing what most Americans do whenever a cool phone is launched (sans iPhone and Motorola phones, of course): The desire to buy something but knowing you can’t have it (yet) – either because the phone is incompatible with US frequencies (this is a perfect example of why a completely free market isn’t always good) or because it is simply not marketed in the US. Actually, I don’t understand why so many Americans wait till the carriers start selling a specific phone instead of just buying a unlocked phone in a Nokia store or online. Is it because the phones are heavily subsidized by the carriers (so it would be foolish not to buy one and sell the old), or is it because you can’t renew your contract without buying a new phone?
