iPhone's multitouch on the Nokia N95!!!

Reading Stefan's Nokia HQ blog (http://www.intomobile.com/2007/07/12/my-afternoon-at-nokia-headquarters-in-espoo-finland.html), "have whatever Nokia (released or unreleased) device they own flashed with any firmware version (public or internal) they wanted; more on this later." made me think...

"hmmm, INTERNAL firmware? Could those give our phones new features that haven't been available for the public?"

So, presenting:

Nokia N95 with multitouch screen capabilities!:D:icon_thumright:
2.6" touch screen
Multi touch, with pinch and scroll
First S60 device with touch screen. This is just a quick video from the N93 put onto youtube. Apologies for the blurry screen.

That's kind of cool I guess but the N95 screen is way too small to have this be actually usable.

Also, I hate getting my screen dirty.

Yup, I was thinking that when I filmed it. Lol, the size of my finger compared to tiny little music player controls ;)

Maybe with a stylus it would be ok, but thumb for 2.6" only ...not good. :p

Lol, well this will be the nearest thing I'll come to an iPhone until the UK gets it. hahaha lol.

Thats people's problems!! They seem to forget that the N95 is a PHONE format, not a PDA and thus, it has a smaller screen size that works for it.

Generally phones with touchscreen interfaces have a bigger screen than standard to allow for the heavy use of finger and stylus input. Note, i am referring to standard touchscreen PDA Phones, not the little exceptions like the Neonode which has a tiny screen.

It would be nice to have a toucscreen in a phone like the N95, but frankly i'd prefer one with a bigger screen. The S60 UI will just need to be modified to use this technology and i know for a fact Nokia are working on that already.

As far as multi-touch is concerned, it will be abit difficult to get since apple are said to be sitting on that patent quite heavily. Thankfully there are other developers working on multi-touch like Synaptics.

So this means that it was done thru a firmware modification? Wow! Did you do it yourself? How did you do it?

Can other n95's be done like this too?

You can do this yourself. Not just with the N95 either.

It was done with a bluetooth keyboard.

"hmmm, INTERNAL firmware? Could those give our phones new features that haven't been available for the public?"A firmware update giving something a touch screen?

Thanks guys if you understood the joke and played along.

If you weren't playing along...

Sorry if I raised some hopes there. This wasn't meant to fool you guys. I got the idea from youtube user: GlobalDVC. Mine was a video response to his.

Check this out: Nokia N95 new Apple iPhone skin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZNSw0-6TEc)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZNSw0-6TEc

He had to use camera effects to do that. :D

Why make this?

It was ridiculously funny that people would believe sticking plastic on there could do that. But it was even funnier reading comments about how it's a fake with forensic level analysis.

e.g. Imagine if someone stuck a pair of 3 feet plastic wings on a car and then you saw it on video flying. Obviously it's fake. There'll be people that will get it's a joke, and there will be those that will say: "well, examining the flight of the car and the length of the wing, and the insufficient propulsion, that's highly improbable".
I wanted to see if I could get the same reaction from those same guys at youtube. The background story was more for them - I didn't think it would get any of you guys as I thought firmware giving touch screen would have been as equally ridiculous for tech fans.

Nothing was mentioned up to now in case they had read the thread further and realised how to do it and not made their funny comment.

Like this guy:

part 4 : notice the irregularities in the thumb drag on the video. the images actually rotate at exact times apart from eachother while his thumb drag does not. His thumb doesn't even pick up the pictures accurately enough in the first few pulls, then gets his timing right on the last few. This is standard motor function adjustments when dealing with an automated process ( think music beats .. the first few beats it takes a person a second or two to get on track and then they are automatic)

http://www.youtube.com/comment_servlet?all_comments&v=SZNSw0-6TEc&fromurl=/watch%3Fv%3DSZNSw0-6TEc
"Notice the irregularities":p lol. There are 6 parts to his explanation.

I'll post the comments from my video when it gets enough of them. They're on pending approval so they don't spoil it for someone else who's about to post a comment.

Here's one:
This as to be a fake, the OS in the iphone over 600mb alone. the facts don't match the myth on this one...Myth is Busted! Again, apologies if I made anyone on the forum think this was actually possible.

Thanks! lol!

I made so many mistakes in that video... Like, when I was about to move the gallery and the screen turned off  Nice. lol.

hmmm... well, let me guess telepathy??? mind over matter??? No sorry, I meant that you knew immediately I was using a BT keyboard.;)

Stefan of into-mobile, within minutes of mailing him the video link posted a comment on how it was done :p But I've left all revealing comments hidden for now.

SU-8W i think is the model of the keypad, but then BH-500 and BH-501 is more like it... SU-W8. Perfect for the job with the dedicated S60 keys. Very easy to set up. The only difficult thing was working out which one is my left as I was filming upside down. That's where my hand disappeared to half way in the video to turn the keyboard the right way around.;)

Kudos to all you guys who got it. As expected, the non phone peeps on YouTube thought I'm either using video editing software or I'm playing a video and coreographed my movement.

Lol, if I could do that, I would have gone the whole hog and spoofed the iPhone adverts using an N95!

HAHAHAHAHHA!!! brilliant!!

Understandable. ; )

There's an italian phone blog that linked to that video, and (provided babel fish isn't wrong) one of the readers there believed it was a prototype.

Ciao a tutti,
ma di cosa si tratta? E’ un prototipo o esiste già in commercio? Il costo?
Viva il touch screenAlso, with the N800, there was a hidden FM radio there. So there was a 'software' change that was somewhat giving a 'hardware' change.

But yeah, it would have been nice if something like that could really happen. I really like the whole flick scroll action.

Maybe next trick will be "finger-hover" input or Harry Potter incantations to activate certain features :p j/k

Just to update...this video was blogged in quite a few places (amazed, I didn't expect it to go past the forum).
The number 22 site in Japan blogged it and it's an S60 website. I didn't even know S60 was that popular in Japan. nokias60.seesaa.net (http://nokias60.seesaa.net)Wait...scratch that. It's just a blog! lol

Oh, whilst looking for the link for that Japanese site, I see it's been blogged to by the number 46* site in China, 268 in the world (the one we get spy-pics of Nokia devices at times from) www.pconline.com.cn (http://www.pconline.com.cn/mobile/news/hgxz/0707/1059193.html)I wonder what they're saying? Look at our NOKLA go? :p

It got to number 1 most viewed in the Gadgets section, and 40 all time today. 23,351 views
Got the funny comments that this video was intended for. And some Apple/America versus everyone that happens with iPhone videos.:p Fullscreen video recorded before....FAKE!isn't this the fake version of the n95 called the nokLa n95? it has the touch screen but doesn't slide the both ways open like the original. Why so many people think it is fake? Do they think iPhone "invent" this touch screen or interface?! This interface is not difficult implement if you know programming and Flash. Take the X,Y point at different time interval and you will know the drag ("finger pointing") direction, then you can load the next screen with scrolling effect...
America is always 5 yrs behind in just about everything including fashion...
you best stop watching our movies or listening to our music then.Read more comments (http://www.youtube.com/comment_servlet?all_comments&v=RRXXxf053do&fromurl=/watch%3Fv%3DRRXXxf053do)

Wow yeah I had no idea S60 was big in Japan, considering how they've only had a few handsets there to begin with.

lol, My Bad. I've checked the site out. I think it's just a blog  lol, Like how blogger comes in at 16, and all blogger blogs will come as 16. hehe, lol.

The site is http://tag.seesaa.jp/ It's just a Nokia fan in Japan. Had me shocked then...s60 big in Japan.

But I think www.pconline.com.cn (http://www.pconline.com.cn/mobile/news/hgxz/0707/1059193.html) is their own entity. Or I may be wrong again. I can't understand either Japanese or Chinese.

Yeah I have a portable mini one, and I don't know if it was just the battery, but I had to press so hard just to get the keys to be recognized...I guess it would be more useful if my E70 didn't already have a keyboard, but still...it's so small and uncomfortable I've never actually used it.

I have a Logitech keyboard I hookup sometimes when I need to input long urls, but most of the time I get by with tapping number keys

awesome, do you guys think the nokia keyboard is worth it? I had an apple bt keyboard hooked up to my n95 and I couldn't find any value in it.

The Nokia Keyboard is nice, in that it has some great dedicated S60 keys. (Softkeys, messaging, menu) Keypress is light and quiet, like laptop keys - I find I can type faster on that type of keyboard. Pairing up is really easy, automatically connects on some devices right after, and the battery life is excellent with 2AAA.

However, I really dislike that there isn't a separate numbers/symbols row. The keyboard is wide enough to accomodate but doesn't. Also, it would have liked a keyboard to be raised at an angle a little bit. Finally, there should have been some way that after folding, they keyboard can become rigid (i.e not bending at the middle)

This video makes me wonder if these boneheads really know what Multi-Touch is.

Who are you referring to? Anyway, someone on that video did mention what you said.

The other problem is that the screen is really just not multitouch at all. He only used one input point at a time. Multitouch can use multiple inputs at the same time. The iphone is a "true" multitouch device as it uses electric fields to sense where a persons hand is. That is why things like a wooden pencil in your pocket, probably wont set it off

The whole multitouch was just to get the iPhone tag onto the video. I doubt anyone would have cared as much if it was just N95 with touch screen, as opposed to N95 with iPhone multitouch.
