Filed under: GSM Service Providers — Sukhdeep @ 12:43 pm (4 hours ago)

India continues to shine as a growing telecom market as the market saw an addition of around 5 million GSM customers during the month of May. With this, the total mobile user base in the country has touched an impressive 130.6 million customers.

Cellular Operators’ Association of India represents the GSM service providers in the market and they confirmed that the market saw an addition of 5.04 million new users during the month of May.

The month of April had seen an addition of 4.13 million new GSM customers in the Indian market. If we add the number of new customers generated by the CDMA market, the Indian market is adding around 6 million new mobile customers every month making it the fastest growing mobile market in the world.

Bharti Airtel dominates the scenario and they gained 1.85 million customers in May. With this, Airtel is serving close to around 40 million customers. Hutch is another major GSM player and they added 1.51 million users in May.

Hutch also managed to overtake BSNL to become the second largest GSM service provider in the market. BSNL managed to add just around 238,553 users in May.

In india mobile phones have become so common that in most houses the land lines are becoming redundant. And with india and china specific low cost handsets available freely it is impossible to find a person without a mobile phone in a big city like Mumbai(Bombay). Add to that outgoing calls and messages being a lower than 1 cent(US $) it makes it pretty much affordable to a toddler:p. Though the best part is that the rural penetration is still very low so the opportunity to grow is limitless, therefore mobile giants such as Nokia(who has setup a mobile manufacturing unit) and Sony Ericsson(who has a R&D center and is looking a setting up a production plant) are actively present in India.
The growth has been so explosive that i've been holding the shares of a leading mobile service provider and its value has increased over 200% in about 18 months.:D

I was surprised a little when I saw this article. All this time I was thinking that China was the fastest growing country for phones.
