T-Mobile announced the release of the Wing, a full featured smartphone running Windows Mobile 6. The Wing has a slide out screen with a full QWERTY keyboard and a soft touch deep blue exterior. The Wing would make a good choice for either a business professional or someone who just wants to stay connected. A myFaves enabled phone with a large 2.8 inch display that can be used as touchscreen or with the stylus. With both Wi-Fi and EDGE high speed access you will be able to take full advantage of the full HTML web browsing and HTML email support. Other features include bluetooth, voice dialing, voice recorder, a 2.0 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom that also records video, music and video players and a microSD memory card slot for additional storage.

Hmmm if I can't afford an E61i or N76 or N95, I think I just might settle on the Wing. I need an 850MHz-equipped phone for next semester, and I think it's about time to try Windows Mobile :)

mmm... if speed is one of your "must-have's", then you might want to rethink that idea. Apparently, the phone is a bit sluggish in performance, I guess the thing to do is just to limit the number of apps that's open and keep multi-tasking to a minimum. Oh... it's not an 850mhz processor, it's a 201mhz TI.

Performance
We tested the quadband (GSM 850/900/1800/1900; EDGE) T-Mobile Wing in San Francisco using T-Mobile service, and call quality was excellent. There was very little background hiss or ambient noise during calls to friends, and we had no problems being understood by an airline's automated voice response system. In short, we were really impressed by the clarity of sound. Our callers reported a similar experience and added that they couldn't tell we were using a cell phone. Speakerphone quality wasn't as great, however. There was a bit of tinny quality to the sound, and volume was on the weaker side, mostly when carrying on a conversation in noisier environment. We had no problems pairing the T-Mobile Wing with the Logitech Mobile Traveller Bluetooth headset.

General performance was a bit sluggish. Armed with a 201MHz TI OMAP850 processor, 128MB of ROM, and 64MB of DDR SDRAM, the Wing couldn't quite keep up with our multiple demands and there was a noticeable lag when we had numerous apps open. Fortunately, it's now easier to close out of applications using the Task Manager utility, which you can keep at the top of your Today screen for easy access. The Wing definitely falls behind the competition in the Web-browsing experience. Where the Cingular 8525 has the benefit of Cingular's HSDPA network, the Wing only pokes along at EDGE speeds; pages took longer to load, and we grew impatient. Granted, EDGE isn't that slow, but you definitely notice a difference after having used a 3G handset, and for a device such as the Wing, that extra boost would make a powerful smart phone even more powerful.

...I think the 'wing' is significant in that it's out now, beating the iPhone with a "who's out first with wifi" punch, and is being sold at almost half the price of the iPhone. And it looks good too.

cheers!

I don't know if you were joking or not, but he meant a handset equipped with the 850MHz GSM frequency band.

hahaha... that's a big oops!
My bad, for thinking he meant the processor, they're both "mhz" and the article mentioned "OMAP850"....silly me.... thanks brad.

just imagine all that power...wish it was 850 mhz processor! This is interesting, still gonna wait for the E90 though

haha yes I meant 850MHz. Is it really that slow though? My E70 isn't exactly going at lightspeed either...

Windows Mobile generally run more smoothly than Symbian on the same processor speed, but the chances of application slowing down Windows Mobile is more likely due to it's larger customization options, :)
