hello. i would like to ask help on how to transfer file (pics) via infrared from my Sony Ericsson T630 to a non-SE phone like Samsung or Nokia. i have tried to send pics to another phone with its infrared port enabled but still the transfer failed or it said it could not connect. are different phone brands simply not compatible? i have a friend who have tried to transfer pics from Nokia to SE but that was using bluetooth!

If the receiving phone can't send pictures via IR, then you're out of luck.

I tried sending from my t68i to a friend's NEC. Just doesn't work. I also tried with bluetooth to a friend's Nokia 8910. Doesn't work either.

It just depends on the maker I think.

I've been an SE user for a while now, and I've realized that only SE phones can send picture via IR...I know that the NEC's only work among themselves. Just goes to show that SE is the best!:)

On my friend's NEC, the only thing you can send via IR is a contact. Nothing else.

I'm sure any other company could allow you to send files via IR, but for whatever reason, they don't.

The best device to test IrDA or Bluetooth is to use a PC or PDA. For bluetooth, a non Microsoft stack is prefer as it's current implementation does not support enough profiles for testing.

Do not load any phone suite, just the device driver and software.

Then, try the phone with it. Without the phone suite, you are testing against the standard (PS:some bug may be around, but no phone specific protocol will be involved).

You should be able to find out how good the phone supports the standard. The more standard, more chances of operating with different devices.

However, take note that the communication is a multi-layer processes.

1st, both must support the same channel, IrDa or Bluetooth.

2nd, both must support the same protocol, OBEX, Bluetooth FTP, SyncML and etc.

3rd, both must support the same format, BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG, vCard and etc.

1st point is obvious, 2nd point is quite technical but quite obvious too, the last point is something we have most control but many people will forget. Do not test with only 1 format, test multiple format to confirm. Don't follows the manual, the same file extension can have different format too, eg. GIF can contains multiple pages, JPG has different compression ratio and etc.

In general, Symbian phones is quite strong in all layers. The bluetooth supports is very lacking, but for implementation in phones, only other smartphones OS can match it. Still, don't be surprise that some protocol will not work.

SE is quite strong in 1st and 2nd layers, but quite poor for 3rd layer except for PIM synchronization.

Nokia is quite strong in 1st and 3rd layers, but quite poor in the 2nd layer and PIM synchronization in the 3rd layer.

No idea about the other brands.
