Apple iPhone green lighted by FCC, company stock hits record high
By Colleen Taylor, Contributing Editor -- Electronic News, 5/18/2007

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has given the green light for the upcoming release of Apple Inc.'s first foray into the mobile handset market, the iPhone.

According to documents released Thursday on the FCC's Web site, the commission gave the iPhone a passing grade in its regulatory report. The handset, which the FCC described as a "GSM cellular telephone with Bluetooth and WiFi," is on track to start shipping in June.

The iPhone, which will operate exclusively on AT&T Inc.'s Cingular wireless network, will be available in a 4GByte model costing $499 or an 8GByte model costing $599. The iPhone will be less than a half-inch thin, comes with a 2-megapixel digital camera built into the back, along with a slot for headphones and a SIM card.

Amid the hype and fanfare surrounding the January announcement of its mobile handset plans, Apple hit a considerable speed bump: Cisco Systems Inc., which already has a product dubbed the iPhone on the market, promptly filed a lawsuit alleging Apple's "infringing upon and deliberately copying and using" the name. Cisco, which obtained the rights to the iPhone moniker in 2000, eventually inked an out-of-court agreement to share the name with Apple.

Now Apple is riding high, however. On a wave of iPhone anticipation and the March debut of its Apple TV set-top-box, Apple's Wall Street performance has been on a consistent upward trajectory in recent months. The iPod creator's stock today hit a new all-time high share price, reaching $110.64 in trading this morning—more than doubling the 52-week low of $50.16 Apple's stock price hit in July 2006.
