Anybody have a definitive explaination of what OBEX is and what it does.

I know it is used to EXchange OBjects but the 6230's manual states you can send files by Bluetooth, and it does not support OBEX.

Does this mean the 6230 cannot do something?

Please help

Not very sure, I guess it could mean that you will have to use the PC Suite to transfer files, just like the 6610.

From Open-OBEX - "OBEX is optimised for ad-hoc wireless links and can be used to exchange all kind of objects like files, pictures, calendar entries (vCal) and business cards (vCard)."

From Wireless Glossary - "Object Exchange is a set of protocols allowing objects such as vCard contact information and vCalendar schedule entries to be exchanged using either IrDA or Bluetooth."

Bluetooth has it's own set of profiles to transfer data, ranging from File Transfer Profile (FTP), Generic Object Exchange Profile (GOEP), Object Push Profile (OPP) and etc, but most phones or PDA only implement very few profiles, normally only the Headset profile, Hands Free profile, Dial Up Networking profile or Fax profile.

Very unlikely that Bluetooth data transfer profiles will comes with the phone.

I guess it really mean that you will have to depend on the PC Suite to get some work done, which mean it will not work directly with many phones and PDA.

Guessing based on some facts only, don't take my words for it, have to see the real thing to confirm.

I think it just depends on the bluetooth adapter for the PC and the software that comes with it.

I have the old Belkin USB and another brand Cadmus. On the Belkin, it's just file transfer, and on the Cadmus, its OBEX.

I thought there was something wrong with my Belkin because my phone wouldn't accept pictures that I was sending it. But it turned out, the stupid SE software makes wallpaper as BMP instead of JPG files.

Both work well with a t68i and a z600.

But It can transfer objects by bluetooth without the PC suite!

OBEX was used initially by IrDA, and it is now use as a common object exchange method.

However, Bluetooth has it's own profiles, which can transfer object without using OBEX, so it could be using one of such profile.

If you really want to know the reason, see my post at another thread to get a simple testing method -http://forums.mobileburn.com/showthread.php?threadid=2199
