Hi - I need a player that will will read files from an external hard drive (movies in DivX/Mpeg) and playback on screen.
Seen a few DVD players with input but displaying videos from external sources is vague at best.
Really want to retire my laptop for playing "backed up" Lost Prison Break and movies...
Any ideas peeps ?
P.S. Seen those 2.5/3.5 MPEG enclosures and i'd rather avoid that if possible...

One solution could be to get an Archos 504/604 with the recording stand and have that connected up to your tv. A bit better than a laptop, I am considering that as a solution for not using my computer.
They could crash in price as well as new generation is expected to be announced soon....

A solution I have thought of and tried just to costly....used my mates Iblui and tried that - a good option but I have a PSP I use as a PMP currently..
Ideally a stand alone dvd player that has a USB input for DivX+Mpeg playback capabilty...

Phillips makes a couple of DVD players that support usb.. But from the forums I've read you need a powered external drive. Cost is ~$70US
You can also transcode from PC to Xbox 360 using Tversity (http://www.tversity.com/home). You can also encode to WMV and play from an HDD directly attached. Cost is ~$400US + PC
There's also streaming boxes like the EVA 8000 from netgear (http://www.netgear.com/Products/Entertainment/DigitalMediaPlayers/EVA8000.aspx). Cost is ~$400US + PC
Hope that helps!

Going to convert all to mpeg4 for big screen viewing I think....
