Sony Ericsson Introduces New Phones, Including Two for North America
Date Posted: Today, 9:00 AM
Source: Sony Ericsson

Today Sony Ericsson introduced a handful of new phones, two of which will be seen in North America. All of them feature thin designs.

* S500: The S500 shares most of the attributes and features of the W580, but without the Walkman branding. It's a quad-band GSM/EDGE slider, with a 2 megapixel camera and picture blogging tool. The S500 does have a music player, though it's not the Walkman player, and supports stereo Bluetooth. It keeps the hidden illumination, but sheds the orange and white skin of the W580 for either a green or yellow exterior. It will be available in the U.S. in the third quarter of this year.
* T250: The T250 candy bar phone will be available in two versions, including a GSM 850/1900 variant. It is a lower-tier phone, and its basic feature set includes a VGA camera, FM radio, navigation key, and silver or black metallic finishes. It will be available in select markets in the third quarter of this year.
* P1: The P1 is a new addition to the P Series smartphones and has a long list of features. It has a touchscreen display with handwriting recognition, integrated QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi and supports VoIP. It supports a number of push email clients and uses the Opera Web browser. Its 3.2 megapixel camera has autofocus and the P1 has stereo Bluetooth. With its tri-band GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 and UMTS 2100 radios, it is not optimized for U.S. networks.
* T650: The T650 is another tri-band GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 and UMTS 2100 3G candy bar phone not optimized for U.S. networks. Its standout feature is its 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus. It also supports stereo Bluetooth.

The P1 is so dissappointing.

It seems Im better off buying the N95 than wait for this to come out.

SE makes a strong case for N95..............
with SE being the only brand that most consider to give a though fight to nokia, its decision to keep mum on its high end range, will prompt most people looking to upgrade from K800 to be tempted by the N95, as the K810 doesnt have much new to offer them(they could have atleast upgraded the video rec capabilities), so with no Sofia in sight for atleast another 3-4 months N95 will be having virtually no competition

mmm... thought this was something I could replace my p9 with. But I find it quite dissappointing, to be honest.

This has no EDGE support - meaning that if you're not on 3G, surfing is gonna be so irritatingly slow. No HSDPA support too - so 3G is probably all the speed you'll likely have. And it's triband - when all other smartphones out there are quadband.

And why only 3.2MP for the camera? I would've thought a "flagship" phone would have the latest and greatest, right? Then according to MR - this uses the same 208mhz processor of the p910/p990, that's a 3 year old processor already, why didn't they bump it up to 330mhz like what the N73/N95 uses?

And according to this review:
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_p1-review-143.php

It's video is only 15fps - that's about the same as the K750, which is more than 2 years old already. Then the WiFi - why only 11B when most other wifi equipped phone out there has 11G already. Then there's no GPS, heck even the small 5500 can connect to a bluetooth GPS receiver, why cant they just put something similar to that?

Last rant is that screen - instead of continuing that "you can remove the keypad and make it an all screen phone" form factor (p910), they changed it to the M600-like form factor, which gives you a smaller screen, smaller keys, and a non-removable keypad.

Sigh... think I'll pass on this one.

:o :o :o

I like the T650, upgrade to the K800 that everyone has, least it aint got that stupid camera shutter thing on the back that sticks out, although there are downsides to not having this.

Good job tho SE

I like the T650, I'll probably buy that when it comes out.
I hate the P1. SE could've done it better - instead they insist on putting on outdated features, nothing new or innovative.

I think it can still be a competitor to the N95 - if, that's a big IF, they price it lower than the N95's price. Like if the N95 is 700$ then this should be like around 350$ only. Since it cannot do most of what the N95 can do. If they price it near or the same as the N95 - then I dont think anyone would be that stupid to buy it.

yeah there's no way the P1 should be priced anywhere over $500 cause it simply isnt worth more than that

P1 will be priced approxemately as P990 when it was released according to Per Alksten at SE in an interview for a Swedish magazine.

I doubt the flagship cybershot will be priced at 350$ though it could be priced at about 550$ like the k800 at launch but then 4 months down the line even n95 would be about 550-600$. may be that day in time, those who will opt for SE will be those who are die hard se fans or people for whom the camera is the most essential part of the phone cause se might beat nokia with is 5mp camera, but in anycase nokia 's got more than a quarter of no competition left, in mobile years thats a lot!

the only phone that would stop N95s rampage would be the E90, which happenes to be a nokia too.

I think due to the size of the E90 it appeals to a smaller segment of people than the N95.

100% correct, E90 is not aimed at normal consumers, definitely at the business end of market.

An E90 is an N85 with a qwerty keymat and just (lol just) a 3.2mp camera...both offer same functionality they are just targeted at alternate markets....

Does the T650 have a new UI?

It should have the updated UI cause i think the new phones to be announced on 14th have the new UI which supports the end and receive keys that the new SE phones are to have.

not much difference on the K850 (comparing to the K800 days)

1. 3 soft keys instead of 2, options are better sorted out, the back button is substituted by one of the softkeys at times

2. the Media screen, now follows a more psp-esque cross menu-ish UI

here's a video I took with my Samsung U600 (review up in 1-2 weeks) at the press conference, it's not good enough to put that officially on MobileBurn, just for your reference anyhow ;)

hey xumdeo since you've used the K850 the d-pad looks fine once you get used to it, but the 3 soft keys look really troublesome, are they flush with the surface or they are raised?

I just noticed it, and I want to ask, is the camera really that slow? (that it blacks out the screen for a few minutes before it shows the taken pic?)

xumdeo
06-16-2007, 04:27 PM
I must say that the UI was extremely stable for a prototype, comparing to that on the W850 when it was first presented

but we can assume that the camera saving speed would improve with the final production model, the camera on the test model I had was busted, so that can't be used to judge really

the 3 softkeys are actually touch sensitive, which took me a while to realize (by reading the white paper on the developer site), because they're quite poorly implemented to be honest, they're not as sensitive as those on LG chololate or Samsung U600/E900, they'll improve on that I'm sure, unless they're stupid as what I've said is already high profile enough :o
but, give that a benefit of doubt, the test models arent that durable, somebody has already broken one of them in 15min at the press conference for example (impressive, I know), so chances are my test model was faulty, or it's problem with my finger, or it's the software, or my sweaty palm, or just me being nervous. because another Hong Kong site shot a video of that, and it appeared to be working okay for them.

Acutally I will have the chance of playing with them the coming week, jsut that it'll have to be bending some of the rules, but it'll definitely be possible as long as I ask and I have the time... (long story, don't ask how/why) I want to shoot a video of the microSD slash M2 slot

xumdeo
06-18-2007, 05:45 AM
ok here are the videos, as promised

1. 5 min demo of K850i, close up of the M2/microSD slot. does it fit? how long does it take to start up? how are the keys like? where's the lens protector?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTo0z0uE5rI

2. reasons why you should not take the so-called camera samples off the k850i too seriously, may be it IS meant to look crap.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFtd90T_nRg
(some of you have pointed out that the some of the scene mode settings were on, you're probably right, but I did try turning everything back to manual and it's still on. so I might be wrong, or the phone might be buggy, or they're different versions of prototypes flying around, as somebody was able to take a macro shots of flowers)

3. accelerometer on k850i in action. is it reliable? find out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnDiBKI7f_4

4. W960i new walkman interface showdown. how pretty is pretty?
