Carrying sensitive information on mobile device has always been a worry for many peoples and companies. While there are software to secure data on mobile devices, most of them depend on password which is a nuisance IMO. The reason is complex passwords are diffcult to enter on mobile devices and simple passwords are useless.

I found a very good OTFE (On-The-Fly Encryption) freeware that could safe keep your data if used correctly. It's calls FreeOTFE, can be downloaded from http://www.freeotfe.org.

Basically, the software works by maintaining encrypted volumes that can reside on files or partitions. It has versions for Windows and Windows Mobile, encrypted volumes can be shared between the platforms easily.

The trick is to separate the CDB from the volume, store the CDB keyfile on my PDA and the volume on the removable card. Then, by carrying the PDA and the card separately, losing one of them and your data safe will still be safe from others.

With the above arrangement, the password is somewhat a backup in case both the device and card are lost together, eg. stolen or forget to remove the card. I now uses a medium strength password that is easy to enter on mobile devices, and still have confident that my data are more secure than solutions that rely solely on passwords, :)

After the superb audio experience with FLAC with my PDA phone, FreeOTFE is the next best freeware that should keep me from switching to other platform for now, :D
