Palm hires former iPod designer
By Sindre Lia, 10 March 2007
One of the true innovators of user interfaces for portable devices, Paul Mercer, has been hired by Palm in the hunt for multimedia users.
Perhaps the most flexible manufacturer in the smartphone market, Palm, has made its latest move to continue its long-lasting history of innovation. By hiring a former Apple computer engineer this time, namely Paul Mercer, according to the New York Times.
Until three weeks ago Paul Mercer worked at Inventor, an independent design firm that he headed in Palo Alto, Calif. However, since 1987 he has lead many design projects including Version 7 of the Macintosh finder, the initial version of the user interface for the iPod, and more recently he worked under contract with Samsung to design the user interface of their Z5 MP3 player.
Paul Mercer created a lot of buzz in the MP3 player market a couple of years ago, when rumors started spreading about an iPod designer working with Samsung, which ultimately resulted in a decent contender to the iPod nano.
Now it seems like Palm is next up to take advantage of Paul Mercer's design skills. Given Palm's history of always being able to turn around and meet the challenges of a rather volatile market, not always with success though, it's now quite obvious that it's just a matter of time before one of Palm's multimedia projects will hit the surface with a Paul Mercer-inspired user interface.
