Nokia Expected to Buy Palm

The two companies are said to be in talks

According to recent reports, Finish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia is in talks with Palm, and several analysts are expecting some type of buyout, which might prove to be a good thing for customers.

Several rumors surfaced recently, suggesting that Palm is in fact looking to be acquired, because of the company's need for extra capital and resources for a parent company.

Among other companies, Nokia was always considered a potential buyer. The news reports reveal that Palm has been in talks with several possible suitors and Nokia has emerged as a frontrunner for the acquisition.

Other previous reports suggested that Motorola also wanted to buy Palm. Palm is a very profitable company with increasing shares, but has sold less than expected in the previous quarters, mainly because of delaying the release of several products.

Palm also has some tough competition from Research in Motion and several other companies that have also gained some of Palm's marketshare. Nokia could also be considered one of Palm's rivals, with its E Series business phones.

Nokia's acquisition of Palm would in a way make sense because Palm could use Nokia's financial support and the Finish mobile phone manufacturer might have a lot to gain from Palm's expertise in devices for the business user.

Nokia is known to be using Symbian OS, of which it is a major owner, on its higher-end handsets, but has had a hard time selling the devices in several areas outside of Europe, like the US. Also, the Finish company has always insisted that its operating systems are better than the competition's. Bringing the Palm OS or Windows Mobile platform onto its lineup of phones would prove to be quite interesting but challenging at the same time.

What is Nokia actually getting for their money? I dont know. I always thought the "Palm" name was a unique one, and one that really stood for what it was; Palm Computing.

If this was the OS, and hardware, that would be a different story, I could see that as an interest. But if this is just for the name, and hardware/products, Nokia has that already - UNLESS, Nokia wants to enter another segment into their already overflowing offering of "hand held computers" cellphones and tablets. Either way, why the heck not?

Hey, if I had the money..... ;)

Im sure that Nokia has the money to buy Palm.

Based on that article, I think they're doing it so that they can gain a larger share of the american market.

In my opinion, nokia is just trying to diversify. A new touchscreen, palm-like smartphone... could rival sony-ericsson's p990 or m600 in the touchscreen-smartphones sales. Since SE now owns UIQ, nokia can use the TREO name (and Palm OS), to make another line of smartphones.

well then maybe Nokia is just buying the name.
just like how Rolls Royce's name was bought by one company and the Engines by another. so the buyer of the engines cannot use the name rolls royce for the engines they bought and on the other hand. the company that bought the name is using it for a lot of things!

hmmm not even part of this topic and yet its here :D

Palm then bought back a perpetual license for the source code and rights to modify and distribute Palm OS Garnet. Someone buying Palm would get the Palm OS as well, but I HIGHLY doubt it will be Nokia.

Palm's Share Price Rises as Takeover Talk Gets Louder
Posted on Mar 5th, 2007

Shares of Palm Inc., manufacturer of the Treo smartphone, rose 11% on Friday to over $18 on speculation that Nokia is considering buying the company. The share price has soared over 25% this year on persistent takeover rumors.

Palm's market cap is now about $1.7 billion, slightly more than its total revenue during the last fiscal year. In addition to Nokia or a private equity firm, Motorola has been suggested as a possible purchaser; other analysts believe Hewlett-Packard or Dell are more likely candidates as they could use an entry into the wireless services market. Taiwanese phone maker High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) has also been mentioned as a possibility.

Palm has engaged the services of Morgan Stanley to help it evaluate its options. Though Palm's famous name retains some value, some analysts believe the now-expensive company has irretrievably lost the "coolness" high ground to rivals like Apple's iPhone and the Motorola Q smartphone. "If you were to take the Treo and put it next to some [of] the devices that have been launched, it looks like a brick," said Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney.

If it were to happen, I would laugh so much at the prospect of a Nokia Treo :p

Yep they are minted and could probably make a bid for a small superpower and win.
