PS3 less backwards-compatible in Europe?
Sony admits that the support for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games in Europe will not be "as good as the US and Japan."

The European model of the PlayStation 3, due to launch on March 23, will use different hardware specifications from the models already released in Japan on November 11, 2006, and in the US on November 17, Sony announced in a statement today.

The European PS3s will be designed differently, meaning that a "new combination of hardware and software emulation" will enable the new PS3s to be compatible with only a "limited range" of PS2 titles and a "broad range" of original PlayStation games.

A Sony spokesperson told Reuters that "the backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as the US and Japan models."

Not just European but Australian models too.

Broad range of original playstation games?
Limited range of PS2 titles?

Why?

Apparently...

Ephraim said the main reason behind the different compatibilities is that Australian/European PS3s will not ship with the Emotion Engine chip installed. The Emotion Engine is the name Sony coined for the PS2's CPU. While the list of backwards-compatible PS1/PS2 games will be limited on launch, Sony will be providing regular updates to expand that list, Ephraim said.
Oh - yet we still have to pay more huh?

"Clearly cost is one of the [reasons]. If software is cheaper than the cost of the chip, then why not do that?," Well because if you're going to make us wait for your incessant delays and still pay more than the rest - that's why not.

"We will be working on delivering backwards-compatibility through software emulation. The software emulation list will grow, and there’s a web site people can check to see what games are backwards-compatible. It will be a progressive emulation."Well at least there's some 'good news'. So essentially, until an update has been released for particular games, users potentially have a huge library of redundant PS2 games?

And playing down the importance of backwards compatibility...wtf. Playstation's ongoing success is down to it's massive library of games - when it was first released, backwards compatibility was one of the key features that was used against other consoles which weren't backwards compatible. [My memory fails me atm, but I recall some article about Sony boasting PS3 true backward compatibility a while ago. Point is, stick to what you're promoting. If you promote BC, stick with it]

They should just be honest and say, "Hey, we messed up our schedules, we can't afford* to give you guys the same console on time so to get it to you, we're taking out this chip. This will prevent full backwards compatibility but there will be updates in future to correct this and gradually allow PS3 to play all PS content.

*because we're stingy and want more profit - even though we're loosing money on this next gen console and the number 1 important thing is to get it out there to the consumers and for some reason we don't realise that.

There's some pros about having emulation of games for backwards compatibility as some users have already said [e.g. apparently games could look better], but I really would have prefered not having a potentially really long wait to do that.

Why? What's the status of the range of PS3 games right now? When I'm [generic gamer example] bored with one of those games, I'd like to go back to PS2 games - where new titles are still continuously produced

i think its a disaster waiting to happen for sony...they still havent released the console worldwide, the new games are more expensive than the old ones, and the ps3's current library of titles, well, lacking (to put it nicely lol) Sony's gonna be an amputee if they keep shooting themselves in the foot!
