Thank you Donna & Frank, Nseries, WomWorld, hehe, just when I gave my self a week for studying, this wonderful thing arrives to take away yet again my attention!
I shall diligently test this out as best as I can for you guys. Right now, I'm just gonna fetch my N93 from CPW (it's come back fully fixed apparently!)
So...double yay pour moi!

Ah - ok, just got back .
Picked up my N93 - updated with new FW from CPW but it's still buggy. They've requested for a rapid replacement...hopefully it's a BLACK one and it's still unlocked...oh yeah and that it works.
whoah! Nice phone, congrats!
... charge it already then post an initial review! hehehehe...
cheers!
Yup, I'll just relax my feet (them converse shoes are tight!) and upload some pictures online.
Hehe, gonna be doing some wicked time management here as I'm meant to be revising for something else.

Fire away! That's what I wanted to say in the first post (but obviously forgot), if anyone has any questions about the N95...yatta yatta, go ahead and post them. I'll try to answer them all.
So you've had it two and a half hours already... :) Start spilling the beans...
Okay! Wait a bit though, I'll try to write something up by this evening GMT.
I'll make a much more in depth one definately after the 22nd.
Small secret snippet:
...Like all new devices, it's already screming low battery.
Usage from 13:00 to 17:00
1-2 hours photo taking
20 minutes attempting to use GPS
20 minutes texting
10 minutes calls
5 minutes video recording
5 minutes gaming
5 minutes reviewing photos
5 minutes surfing web via WiFi
5 minutes bluetooth sending/receiving
Rest standby
This is not how I intend to test the battery. (It's just what I did this afternoon)
I'll test out direct usage of certain features and how long the phone lasts from full charge for each one A.S.A.P.
edit: oh but it's very very quick to charge.
"Very Nice, How Much?" thats good stuff right there.... I Want one!
Indeed!
How much: Well, approximately £0.00 ;)

Right - In terms of downloadable guide maps, there seems to be no option for India. It goes Hungary-Ireland-Italy-Netherlands
However, just browsing Mumbai, there's visible detailed main roads...
e.g. looking at Bakery line..Nanabhai Moos Marg...(Do these sound familiar to you?
... also check out the voip on it... if u need help msg me.. we can check out mobile skype on symbian using fring or we can setup a truphone service... i am dying to know how efficiently the phone handles voip
Internet call says "No sevice".
Let me try and set Fring up...
..ok I can't seem to download Fring either - "Script Error"

And I'm torn between revising and writing up a review:BangHead: this week. (There's definately going to be one, but just tied up with other things too this month - you should see one perhaps by next week)
As said, open to any questions and will be answering them directly if I somehow don't get around to a review soon.
so do you get to keep the phone?
Hehe I'd like to but I don't think so.
or do you just get to test it out?
Yup, I'm apparently "one of 11 web 2.0 leaders who’ll be taking part and will be amongst the first to experience the N95" I feel privileged to be an N95 beta tester :D It's the experience of a new phone and an opportunity to give you guys direct info on it.
If there's anything you'd like me to cover in detail, post a message.
how long can you keep it for?
I'm not exactly sure, there was no definite return date to my knowledge, but I think long enough to answer all your questions, push the N95 to the max, find most of the bugs/niggles and write up a review.

OK - Feeling guilty that I didn't manage to do a little write up like I mentioned last night, so I'm going to post some sample pics for you before I get some sleep [and I'll try to write something when I wake up]
Here are though some sample images of the N95.
As I'm sure you're aware this is still pre-release/pre-production model/firmware and there's still potentially room for improvement.

Unfortunately there are no Bolivian Maps/City Guides.:(
This should explain why:
From Nokia Vice President, "a couple of words on the maps on the device, basically these maps are cached to the device. You can get them over the air, but you can also got them via Wi-Fi, or via PC application. They're the most ubiquitous maps that you'll find on any mobile devices anywhere. We've got over 100 countries covered, and basically any electronic maps out there will be used within this solution"
It seems that whatever google maps has, the N95 is able to access those maps too (at least major roads)
The N95 was able to find an airport, but nothing else.
Map coverage though is increasing, so if electronic maps of Bolivia do become available online, the N95 will probably have access to it to.
PS. Lucky peep peep peep peep to be able to play with the N95 already. :)Indeed. This is all thanks again Nokia Nseries (http://www.nseries.com/index.html), Donna& Frank&crew of WOM World (http://www.womworld.com/nseries/) and above all YOU mobileburn forum guys as I wouldnt have gotten to do such things if I weren't replying to you and ranting here on MB:D

Thanks:D but really as said to tatoo1000, it's also very much down to you too how I'm able to demo it:cool:
As for my review/write up, there's good news and bad news.
Bad news, I cannot do the N95 review on the forum
Good news, I'm writing one for the main site http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/2038/yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaahmg5.gif
This actually works out all for the better since:
I will still be answering questions here [so continue firing away]
My time table is more flexible [for studying and testing]
The mandatory week+ experience for a review should help me give fairer judgement on the N95/rigorously test out it's features. [Hmm...I've not even had it for 24 hours yet[at time of writing], although it feels like one of the fone "family" lol ]

Out of interest, the n95 is supposed to ship with ability to view youtube, have you tried that yet?

:)
how long does the battery last usually?
Right now, rigorous testing gets 2 hours before warning low battery.
That's having full screen brightness, WiFi, GPS and Music via loudspeakers at full volume on simultaneously.
There are many factors that contribute to battery usage. But for the sake of quickly finding out the reasonable minimum amount of battery life I can get from the preproduction handset, I'll be testing out battery based on the following conditions [Full charge to First Low battery warning to off]:
MP3, 128kbs Loudspeaker
GPS [tracking - haven't purchased turn by turn/city guides yet to test that]
Wifi Web Browsing
Calls
TextingCheck out results later.
Any specific conditions you want testing out, post and I'll see what I can do.

As in viewing youtube directly or from the Video centre app?
From the browser, NO. You still cannot view youtube.
However, from the Video Centre app, YES, you can view videos from youtube's main page [it comes up as a feed]
I'll limit myself to answering only what's asked to prevent myself unintentionally writing a review on something.

Kudos on the early info Jose_R.A.M, some fine work. Just a quick question, how would you describe the build quality of the handset i.e sliding mechanism, button feel and response, any noticeable creaks. Does it have the feel of a US$700 handset? Cheers.

Welcome to MobileBurn forums Scott1313.
In short...
The Nokia N95 is definitely a robust device. There's absolutely no squeaking when pressed [and I've prodded and squeezed everywhere].
Dual action slider feels the same as the one tried a month back at CES. Solid. There's an unmistakeable "click" when put into either three modes [Closed, portrait, landscape]
Buttons - all very responsive. They keypad, despite being marginally larger than that of the N73's, is so much more comfortable due to the raised "hump" on the keys.

Wow - I missed that feature. Was it recent news? The ones I tried did not have this.

Yeah, follow the links here:

Apparently the production N93i has focused video.
Now that I think about it, your preproduction N95 might not have it.

Oh my  - now that is impressive!
Why Nokia's Kazuto Aoki didn't mention this [or at least stress if he somehow murmured it] when he introduced the N93i to us?!
This is a really useful feature, as mentioned, for those who review gadgets! It's annoying to view early videos of new devices where the camera [or user] just wasn't capable of focusing the video.
I bet, with some expert's tweaking [more complicated than it sounds, if it were so easy they would have put auto focus on macro], the N93 should be capable of this. Why? Have you noticed that when using "bar code reader", that's also in constant autofocus? [at least for things close up] It makes the same mechanical sounds as the N93i.
Also, come to think of it, if going by constant autofocus on "bar code reader" is anything to go by, then perhaps the N95 could have it in the future? Wishful thinking? I'm not sure that it will have it as Nokia seems to like removing obvious features from one handset that would otherwise make it complete, in order to differentiate their markets...(This was the poor excuse as to why the N93's camera for stills, in particular, macro, SUCKED)
This constant AF, seems like an ace card that a dedicated video device should have alone. (As much as I would want an all in one device) If the N95 were to have it, it wouldn't make sense as all the other video features (except when used in optimum conditions) are definitely not on par with the N93.

Sir, I'd like to ask.
How is the battery life? (with texting, some voice calls, wifi, gprs/edge, lots of photos with flash). Would you say that it's better than the battery life of the N80?
jayesh
02-16-2007, 12:05 AM
from what i have read of it... the battery life is marginally better. The last fw update a lot of the reviewers were saying brought the battery life closer to n73 standards

Sir, I'd like to ask.
How is the battery life? (with texting, some voice calls, wifi, gprs/edge, lots of photos with flash).
Battery life - still testing it. Unlike other features, it takes a looooooooong time to test out, particularly since there are so many variable.
Today's tests continues and consist of charging to full and running down the battery till I cannot turn the phone back on.
From intensive mixed usage [Texting/Calling/Wifi Web Browsing], you'll get 2-4 hours [Screen on FULL brightness]. The more you use the screen, the closer the number gets to 2 [where as calls/music do not require continuous screen usage]
Battery life can be further extended by reducing screen brightness - when you're in an environment with good lighting.
e.g. Outside in daylight, in an office.
When tests are complete, I should be able to give you precise numbers.

I hope so.
Good heads up though, I'm doing side by battery tests now with the N73.:) [At the moment, they're both playing identical selection of songs through headphones. I've hidden them in a drawer as I'm getting annoyed at hearing the same song over and over again.]
Congrats again Jose. I look forward to reading your full write-up. Was funny when you said the CW manager went crazy over it, especially knowing that many CW personel just don't know crap about the handsets they sell (except the ones in Oxford street).

Also, does that 3D game give you an option to flip the screen so you can use your left hand to control the game? How are the 3D graphics, does it scroll well?
Thanks!

Jose,
If I'm not to late to ask!
Nope, not too late. Got till the end of the month to do a review, but I'll hopefully finish before that.
What games come pre-installed on it?
Snake and SRE
I heard there was a card pack or something that came on it? If so, what games are included in that card pack?
There doesn't seem to be a card pack. But when my N93 came back for repair it came back with Snake, SRE and Card Deck, which contains
AcesUp
Golf
Klondike
Nester
Shifting
TrustyTwelve
You could always install that after if it will not be in the final N95s.
Also, does that 3D game give you an option to flip the screen so you can use your left hand to control the game? With those two games on the N95, you can flip seamlessly from Portrait to Landscape but NOT so that playing games gives your left hand control of the D pad (Unless you play upside down, and that's a little hard:p)
I'll forward it to Nokia that if possible, it would be beneficial to add another orientation of the screen, with Dpad on the left, and music keys on the right (as with 99% of controllers)
How are the 3D graphics,
Identical performance to the N93. Looks quite good playing SRE through TV-OUT
does it scroll well?
Sorry, could you clarify that?
Thanks!
My pleasure:D

Sorry, could you clarify that? What I mean by: "Does it scroll well" is, is the game very fluid? Does it seem to lag, or be jumpy because the phone can't handle the game. Sorry, I don't know how I can better describe what I mean...
I guess a better way to ask, does the game seem to run slow because the phone can't handle the game. Sort of like if you were to emulate a XBox game on an Atari or something... :)
Be careful Jose. Its fine that you make the effort to answer everyone's questions, i really commend that personal touch.....but you may end up making a full review in the forum by mistake. Haha! I know its hard not to get excited about such a fine toy and wanting tell everyone, but don't go in-depth until the time is right.

Wise words JoN. A couple of nights ago I actually discussed something similar with jayesh [about the getting excited and writing up now, when I'm meant to be doing something else]
[btw, what I've written so far, is me trying not to go too much in depth. There's so much that needs saying - but I'll just keep quiet and leave it in my notes for the final release]
What I mean by: "Does it scroll well" is, is the game very fluid?
Yes. [is that less in depth enough :p j/k]

Since we are not supposed to expect in-depth details of the device before the official review can you just throw some light on some generic quires...
How is the overall response time of the device when starting any application, accessing the menu system & sliding the phone to the music mode :icon_question:
As for the build quality, how sturdy is the slide mechanism & the battery cover as well as the memory card slot :icon_question:
I hope these are not too much :p

Hey Jose, any word on when MB will be getting the N95 review?:icon_thumright:
Jose is busy revising at the moment, but the N95 'pre-review' will be published in early March, pending him getting the copy to me to edit. Our full review of the production N95 will come sometime after that.

I am newbie so HI!
Jose. First of all - congratulations. You know for what ;) can you tell me something about the sound quality of this device? IS it comparable to N91 sound quality or something with s60 3rd ed but with worse sq like 3250/n73 etc? I am a n91 owner so this aspect is very important for me ;) can you tell us something about this? Hope sound quality will be comparable to n91, not to 3250. How about its loudness? (is it good word? I am not from english-talking state ;) )

One more question before the preview comes to life. Does it support Microsoft ActiveSync or Nokia ItelliSync??? Does it support push email???
If not, I guess that it will do trough third party developers, isn't it? Otherwise E90 gets one extra point.

E90 is an enterprise phone/business/road warrior phone. N95 is a multimedia/entertainment phone.

Wow! Jose with the N95! Cool. :D
I have a question although you will be releasing a review of this phone, i like to ask if the N95's body painting is easily scratched or will it last that long. I believe the body is made of plastic. Or do you somehow believe that the front navigation keys will suffer stripped painting like the one below? (my friend's N70) It hapnd to my N90 too (although i don't have it now) hoping for your reply. :)

N70's nav-keys

IMO, i think they have the same chrome style paintings.

Hey guys, sorry for the rather long delay in replies. I will get to answering all questions after this post.
Just to update, as you may be aware, N95 beta testers were given a special gift package from Nokia.
On Thursday [22nd March] I received that package:

Intensive tests have already begun...pleased to say many bugs found in the first handset have been fixed. Although, I am finding a few new ones/niggles too.
All details will be 'published' in a full review [no need for pre-review now], posted at the forums a.s.a.p.

How is the overall response time of the device when starting any application, accessing the menu system & sliding the phone to the music mode
Response time on the FINAL device is very fast. Turns on faster than the N93 - sub 20 seconds.
As for the build quality, how sturdy is the slide mechanism & the battery cover as well as the memory card slot
Excellent build quality. Quite sturdy slide mechanism, light with a slight spring assist when going into multimedia mode.
USBmini cable: Is this cable the same we can find with any digital camera or any palm? Or does it have a special design?
Standard mini USB. I'm actually using my Fuji cable for transfers :D. Quite handy imo.
Firmware: Is it possible to update firmware of a phone offered and targeted to Asia with a firmware targeted to the USA?
Not too sure sorry. Perhaps, I'll try and find out.
Wow! Jose with the N95! Cool. :D
I have a question although you will be releasing a review of this phone, i like to ask if the N95's body painting is easily scratched or will it last that long.
Well...the first N95 I had gain some scuffs on the 'silver' plastic face, and the camera buttons did look like the chrome faded a tad [although, I'm not sure if it wasn't like that already]. This one seems to be much better.
I believe the body is made of plastic. Or do you somehow believe that the front navigation keys will suffer stripped painting like the one below? (my friend's N70) It hapnd to my N90 too (although i don't have it now) hoping for your reply. :)
The chroming here is similar to that on the N93 - and that, despite all the beating it's gone through, still is faultless.
How long does it take for the camera to load? By that I mean, after you flip the lens cover switch, how long is it before you can actually take pictures?
N95 stumbles here as it takes a rather lengthy 3-5 seconds to start up
Just thinking how loud the ringtone is now? I played with the ones updated till Dec 06 and they were really soft
Very loud, very clear. Although this is highly subjective. It's louder and clearer than the N73 using identical .mp3 tones.
So is it possible to ask more in detail about how the Video Center App and more specifically the YouTube viewing is?
Your post made me remember that I had actually answered all these posts a while back - but just forgot to press post.
Anyway, Video call centre app is like a mini gallery. Going into the YouTube folder [there are others, e.g. Reuters] the N95 refreshes the latest 'Featured' videos on YouTube.
When you open one, video player opens, buffers for a few seconds and streams your video - no lag. The video quality though is condensed much like early .3gp videos. At this point in time, no actual feature to search and play youtube videos, like you could on your desktop.
Does it support Microsoft ActiveSync or Nokia ItelliSync??? Does it support push email???
I'm told it does. Will have to check.
You know for what can you tell me something about the sound quality of this device? IS it comparable to N91 sound quality or something with s60 3rd ed but with worse sq like 3250/n73 etc? Through the same CX-300 headphones, sound quality is very good.
I'll have to find another N91 for direct tests, but at the moment, I feel it's better than the N73/N93.
It has much more to offer though on music playing front.

Guess no software is perfect.
True. It's my first time as a beta tester, so perhaps it happens often that the final fw ends up having more bugs than the beta [at least more severe bugs]. E.g. how the N93's camera was worse on the post production.
It's currently only one bug, but it's WLAN related. Many features on the phone rely on an internet connection [Via SIM or WLAN].
Ouch. but granted. N95's features are way too good. As they say, A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush... i guess.
Yes. It is very, very good. Having to recharge a device frequently could also be seen as the device being so good, you use it constantly. [hehe, overly optimistic?] Being one of the ultimate convergence devices, all your gadgets are now in one phone - all running on that same battery, hence why many of us are getting annoyed that not much seems to be happening to resolve that 'issue'.

i wonder where hes living. dont be surprise robbie. here in my place (PH, capital texters' of the world), even a 12-year old kid has N70s, N73 and those 15-year old kids have the best of NSeries phones. Prices here drop significantly and they can always buy a second handed phone at all times having half the price of the new ones. Sometimes I have this insecurities for myself. "Why in the world this 15-year old kid has this cell phone just like mine and that we are doing different things." LOL. well it's democracy perhaps. That is why I'm always keeping my lousy non-feature 8800 so that even if kids show their fancy cell phones, "mine is more expensive". haha. :BangHead:
Good point. To carry all the separate gadgets would mean each would have it's own battery. If you used the N95 calling features only you'd have ample battery life.
True. battery life just like what i have mentioned with the other thread as I have realized never quite really matters either short or long. It depends on the "event". And remembering what Moby said, "once the new toy has ended its playtime goodies, it'll be a normal cell phone for that matter"... not exactly like that but somewhat the same.
So, the N95... ahem... hypnotized! :D

Actually, calling features...i.e. Sim Voice calls, surprisingly the N95 scores highly there. It's stated 6h 30m, I frequently matched that, give or take 10-20 mins [and oh my bill was high ]

It was 6.5 hours on GSM arena [I think] But that's just calling. The screen is off most of the time.
Mostly anything that either uses the screen/WLAN/GPS will kill the battery super quick.
On continuous play,
MP3, 6hours 10 minutes, full volume 128kbs via headphones
Video, 3hours 15 minutes, full volume, VGA TV quality
Reducing the brightness/offline mode doesn't really improve on battery life.

Full volume??? why. you always listen to music at that level? :D anyway, 6 hours would buy me. I got 11 hours with my N91ME without using the phone with any operations. Backlight off. 50% volume. 3 hours would be my minimum requirement with regards to listening. So N95 delivers audio entertainment well.
Regarding the video. 3 hours of full-length video would be great while on the go. so keeping a spare battery in our "great pockets" is advised if this is the case. correct? that's all for now. time to sleep. 2AM here. lol. :D thanks for the answers.
EDIT
wait... what headphone? The BH-501 via A2DP?

i'm not surprised. lol.
Yes, that's the general trend for other phones. But it drains quicker on the N95 [as the screen is so much larger and the battery is a little smaller]
Full volume??? why. you always listen to music at that level?:D
Full volume because other official stated battery times are almost never correct. You've got to put your music into certain settings and have low volume if your ever going to expect to reach similar results.
I think it's fairer this way, at least for the consumer.
The more you skip/search tracks, the less you'll get.

Yes, if you're only wanting 3 hours, the N95 is great! You should have some spare battery life yet for a little texting/calling/photos :p

Spare battery is indeed a must [anyway], particularly in the N95. I actually have mine in my wallet. I can't go anywhere without a wallet/phone/watch so as long as the spare battery is in the wallet, I'll have my back up power :D It's a ready solution to the N95's Achilles heel.
Make sure though the spare battery is 100% genuine. Prices are quite high, but considering what your putting it in, it's not worth the high risk of damaging your phone.

No, lined earphones, sennheiser cx-300.
I'll get figures for you via BH-501 too.

Thanks!!! :) Though I tried the BH-501 at the cell phone shop with my N91 8GB, i only tried it for half a song... ya, the moby song. i wonder how long will the N95's battery last for A2DP transmissions on wireless headsets. again. thanks!

Hi, I've read through this thread and I can't wait for the review. I've been thinking of getting a N95 as my next phone since I saw the images posted here a while ago!
There's one thing I don't think anyone else has posted (and I can't wait for the review to find out!): What's the recorded video quality like? Having used sony ericssons since the s700, I'm sick of phones capable of decent stills but dire video recording.
Many thanks for the info already posted!

Hi Jose hows the audio quality of the N95 as compared to the latest iPod? If the sound quality is at par, then this might be my all in one device  Oh and I love that it comes with the 3.5mm headphone jacks. Now I can use my Shure E500 with it. I take my music seriously :p

(PH, capital texters' of the world), even a 12-year old kid has N70s, N73 and those 15-year old kids have the best of NSeries phones. Prices here drop significantly and they can always buy a second handed phone at all times having half the price of the new ones.Let me know when N95's are cheap in your part of the world, PH or is it PI?

I'll get a video uploaded soon from the N95 final version.
I've got some from the beta version [somewhere, I burned lots of things to disk and deleted them from hard drive]
Beta Version: Crisp clear VGA resolution. Colours were more vibrant than that of the N93. Moving/panning the N95 caused quite a bit of distortion to the video. Nightmode - severe loss of frames, but the picture remains in colour, and actually quite a lot can be seen [as opposed to the N93, where on latest firmware, it records in black and white and maintains acceptable frame rate]
Final: Seems the same, perhaps less distortion. Will need further testing on this.

Nope. Not at the moment.

I'd say they were comparable, N95 to the latest nano. Clean, crisp sound, good channel separation. sufficient volume [from 64kbs - 320kbs]. To be pedantic, if you enjoy excessive amounts of bass, the N95 can't deliver that. Otherwise, it's really rather pleasant.

Hi all,
Long-time reader, first-time poster :)
Jose, how does the N95 handle email accounts? I'm looking for something to 'converge' my phone with my Palm T3. That has five accounts on it at the moment (rising to seven in April or May). If the N95 (or the E65, second-choice) can match that, I'll be calling Orange shortly...!

It's PH like www.gov.ph :D I live and work here in the Philippines (with my mom, filipina) though I was born and legitimately from Spain (My Dad).
After a month or two, we are expecting a major slash down in price with the N95. And preferably I will buy this after this period of time. It's not practical buying toys on first releases already. I must learn how to control my NSeries temptation now and save money for other important matters.... but cross-fingers now... lol. :D

Does this mean N91 still has better sound... Can't wait to compare. ;) Anyway, does it come with a music DRC (Dynamic Range Compression) like the N91? :)
I didn't have things this expensive at that age, I have to ask: Do you work part/full time and what do you do? Nothing personal, I just won't be buying things like this for my kids when they get to be that age. life.
im from indonesia but live in aus..in indonesia fones are alot cheaper..i bought my n80 brand new when it first came out for $800 while it was $1099ish on the shops, and i bought my n73 for $500 while it costs $800 on the shops..:D and i dont work..just save up from my pocket money $40-50 per week and stuff like that...
i wonder where hes living.

Hi Gary!
Welcome to MB Forums:hello2:
I will test out multiple email and get back to you A.S.A.P.

I'm not 100% sure as I do not have one with me at the moment to test. I'll try and get hold of one and try it out. Most likely outcome is that the N91 will outperform the N95 - nevertheless, the n95's sound quality is excellent.
About DRC - not too sure.

I think the most corrupt country in the world (next is ours. lol :D being 7.8, 8.0 the former) do spend their government money on cell phones... lol :icon_axe:
back to N95:
Jose, how easy it is to edit playlist in the N95. tnx!
EDIT: have you also try to manage burning some videos in DVD. how's the quality. And about the video recording of N95, stereo, joint stereo or mono?

Bad form to reply to one's own post, I know, but multiple email accounts in doable (and now done). I don't see the logic in combining text messages and email under Messaging, but there you go.
