View Full Version : Vista First Impressions
I've made the jump to Windows Vista, my first impressions here - http://www.pantsland.com/2007/02/01/oh-the-opacity-windows-vista-thoughts/
Anyone else made the upgrade?

Nice first impressions brad.
I'm going to be jumping ship to Vista, but only to use Vista Ultimate's ever hungry specs to drive up specification of my next laptop, hehe, (delayed ever so slightly since apparently, I've only just gotten this one) I'll most likely be sticking Home into it. I can't really see any other need to go Vista right at this moment.
One other memorable Vista read...(apart from all the other, Vista Rips of Mac)"A Mac user switches to Vista (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16873608/)" from the Mac perspective he seemed to be in love with the OS (just hates the hardware they're on)

I don't really see the point in upgrading yet either. If you don't use Aero, which according to you Brad isn't necessarily worth it, there's no point to it. It's not as big a difference as with Windows 98/NT to XP...at least that's how it was for me.
In any case, I was shooting for Ultimate when the time came for it, but now with the comparison chart my roommate showed me, I think I'll just stick to Premium. Seems to do everything I want already, unless anyone reveals exciting features that is only on Ultimate. As far as I can tell, it's mainly security features.
There is an app to make Macs run Vista, right? Cause that's what I'd like to do...
There are a lot of under-the-hood changes in Vista from XP. The security model is much more Unix like than ever before. What that means for end users is an overall much more secure OS, and I think that is Vista's strongest point, not all the pretty stuff.
Firstly i havent signed in to mb since last may crazyness and second im in love with vista i bought a new pc here in the uk on tues and im using a 19 inch monitor and it looks amzing i cant get over how nice everything is and its amazingly touchy feely i literally use everything now unlike when i was using xp the gadget bar is he nuts i downloaded a radio app so i can tune in to my favorite radio shows. its so much faster more responsive and generally just a better os. ive read alot of people are slagging it off but they seem to be people that havent made the switch or tested beta, anyway you see it vista is the way forward regardless and yeah a few of my hardware drivers have suffered problems being incompatible but already ive nearly remedied all of thos issues sorry for bad spelling and lack of punctuation writing this quick as im about to go on lunch

All i can say about Vista......NO SLI SUPPORT AS OF YET......LAME
Ever since the drivers for my memory card readers became available, i can now fully recommend vista to anyone. For me it works and I'm happy.
With all the updates so far, the dust is settling and the OS is maturing. Worth the upgrade now, but in the form of a new system, or a well hardware updated old system.

Jose, some people will always say Vista is a rip-off of Mac. I’m always irritated when I’m hearing this. I’m not a fanboy and Windows has it’s flaws too... The rip-off, well:
1. Vista’s working concept, physical and internal was planned and conceptualize as early as the year 2000 and was officially announced 2002. Mac OS latest’s was released later than these dates. Now i wonder who copied who. From whom. Most people, they don’t know about beta, so they can’t foresee what will be released and making conclusions out of nothing.
2. Vista’s and Mac’s major comparative paradigm flows only with design and little important features, the one that our eyes often see most. The search, the gadgets, isn’t it that it was invented 80’s ago not by mac? And besides, these are enhancements. Almost all operating systems have them nowadays.
3. They compare everything comparable (of course) and focus on them most. For example, many relies on one focus and one topic only, e.g. “A Writer’s Point of View of Vista?”. Gotta be kidding. Why not look at a gamers’ point of view? A software developer’s point of view? Why not tackle and compare flexibilities such as gaming support, software and hardware compatibility, security, and more.
4. About security, Windows is secured ever since and they have the most sophisticated security as many see it in the other way. Windows being 90%? Most hackers do propagate on windows, only few major exploits are reported and often times, setup and users actions are to be blamed. Security is “virtue”.
5. The point, there is no competition happening. At 90% vs. 7%? There will be if somehow it’s 60% vs. 30% so IGNORE the last 4 statements. Whoever ripped-off from someone, IDEAS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE OWNED. They are to be extended, polished and improved.

I will definitely be getting Vista either later this year or early next year...of course with a 1GB to 2GB RAM upgrade :D
I'm quite surprised at the general positivity over Vista in this post so far. Its a nice change from the usual MS bashing. It wont last though, too many Mac and Linux sharks patrolling the internet seas.

UGH I absolutely hate the Apple fanboys. I'm sorry to be so blunt, but seriously! I don't dislike Apple, and actually would love having a MacBook (Pro) (and put Windows on it :p), but I hate it when people say, "That computer doesn't work because it's not Mac!" Whatever...you're delusional.
Anyway, I'm actually also considering Ubuntu on one of my old computers. I'm excited to try it out when I get home :)
God damn Ubuntu!!! I loved the idea and was ready to try it out, but two solid weeks of sweating over damn linux leet speak and configuring this an that, i was left wondering what kind of humans this thing was meant for. I finally got it working somewhat, then the upgrade to Feisty Fawn just killed it and i just said "f u...never again!!".
I'd rather buy the preinstalled dell system. Thats 50% of the headache sorted.
Its nice and all, but it will take then a few more revisions to get it to a point that average joes can set it up blindfold.....and i aint even an average joe.
Plus the help forums have to speak HUMAN LANGUAGE instead of machine code. Dont assume everyone has a linux background.
Rant over. :D

i have tried ubuntu.. plus the beryl thingy eye candies. the system is quite solid. my only comment is that, ubuntu should stop developing too harsh special effects to cover up the short-comings. instead, develop a system that anyone can use... as they say, linux variants are made by engineers for engineers. lol... maybe for the meantime.
