Windows Vista lands in stores Tuesday, more than five years after its predecessor Windows XP debuted. With that much time for Microsoft to rewrite its operating system, you might expect it to be a sharp break from the Windows we've known.

It isn't. For all the ways that Vista looks and works differently from XP, it remains recognizably Windows underneath...

The London Free Press
LFPress.ca WHICH VISTA IS FOR YOU?

Windows Vista hits stores on Tuesday, with four versions:
VISTA HOME ($129): Upgrade version for current Windows XP owners): A no-frills version of Vista without the fancy 3-D interface or Windows Media Center functionality. Best for low-end PCs and users who primarily do just e-mail and Net surfing.
VISTA HOME PREMIUM ($299/$179): Slicker visuals than the basic version, plus support for Tablet PCs, Media Center PCs and a few other bells and whistles. A good choice for experienced home users and/or high-end laptop owners.
VISTA BUSINESS ($379/$249): Includes networking features, backup tools and other goodies that appeal mainly to small or medium-sized businesses.
VISTA ULTIMATE ($499/$299): Has all of the features of the other versions combined, plus a couple of other minor bells and whistles. Mainly for all-out power users or business users who want Windows Media Center functionality to go along with their spreadsheets and pie charts.....Making the transition from one edition of Microsoft's ubiquitous PC operating system to the latest and greatest flavour can be a voyage down a road full of potholes, dead ends and smushed raccoons, especially if you don't study the map ahead of time. And with Microsoft Windows Vista hitting stores on Tuesday, it's a migration that many of us lemmings will undertake.

I think I'll be better off with Vista Business. But wait. there's an ULTRA Ultimate version which will cost you $8 only!!! It's in Iran (just read from a pirated stuff review). Full working version without the activation thingy... or when after 3-month of key reactivation, their copy of Vista will validate your machine with their underground server. Cool huh!!!!!

@f_alejandro - And I'm sure that will work forever, and won't cause headaches down the line <end sarcasm>. That method means they would be running an activation server similar to how business with site licenses do. You would honestly be better off just dropping the dollars on a legit version and save some trouble. Though I can't talk, I got my copy of Home Premium from MS for free (legitimately).

Hah, yeah, I wouldn't bother with Home Basic, not pretty at all. Home Premium is the lowest I would go, and it's doing me great at the moment. New media center is pretty nice.

@brad:

new media center? cool. :D at least i think i will go with home premium too. but i need the business edition for additional networking capabilities though.

EDIT:
Which Vista Home Premium have you acquired, the OEM or FPP?

@brad

cool. :D I'm gonna get Home Premium FPP too since Home Premium now supports IIS for which i need with my work-hobby. The Home Premium here costs approximately US$330 but I'll be getting a 25% discount for special matters. lol. :D

I don't have it, but when I do.. Home Premium.

That's only because Aero (the main reason for getting Vista!) isn't in Basic. I don't really care for the Media Center that's included with Premium.. I would figure out how to disable it. It doesn't make sense for me to have it sitting in memory.

Vista business doesn't make sense either because I don't need any complex Domain networking at my house. Workgroups have and do work fine for that.

Utimate.. Animated Wallpapers.. I prefer increased performance over the little tricks. :)

I have home-premium, all nice and good, came as a free upgrade from dell so i cant complain, no preference between XP or Vista to be honest, vista does look a bit nicer tho dont it!

Also got vista business, and would recommend but for the lack of media centre. I can see why they have done it but it would be nice to have it there and have the option to uninstall it. But once again, cant complain as i got it free since im a student, and the business version is what our uni provides :)

Dont see the point in ultimate, loads of stuff you will likely never use, maybe more stuff will be available in the future, but most stuff only for ultimate seems to get hacked anyways so it can work on any version!

Agree... what you mean there is to optionally "buy" it from Micro$osft. :D

That we will see...

at first my preference was home premium also. but when i got the chance of having Business (since it came preinstalled), i grabbed it. With Media Center, i think I'm neither really quite sold off with the feature. but it's a personal preference. Others might of course using it full time.

As of now we all know the features each version offers. Vista Ultimate has added features and will of course mature in the near future. At the moment, bit-locker encyption with Ultimate seems ok if "you are paranoid enough" with security.

Regarding DreamScene video wallpaper, I've seen it and the interface is really cool. Add Aero and you have the most "wow" interface in town. :D before we always thought that the merrier our screen gets, the more resource in need. But since DreamScene is specifically designed to be dynamic, it only has (according to reviews) 1 or 2% resource difference than the normal "without dreamscene" in background.Actually it uses the video card's GPU rather than the main CPU and memory resources.Compared with eye candy interfaces in our yesteryears, they use the main resource and in effect, makes our system slower. :) I want DreamScene!!! Anyways, it's a toy. But if it makes me happy, then why not.
