Brits Sent Over 4 Billion SMSs in December
19th January 2007

The UK text messaging total broke through the 4 billion barrier for the first time during December 2006, according to figures announced today by the Mobile Data Association (MDA). December's remarkable total of 4.3 billion takes the overall figure for 2006 to 41.8 billion, surpassing the MDA's prediction of 40 billion and giving a daily average for the year of 114 million.

Person-to-person texts sent across the UK GSM network operators throughout the last month of the year show a growth of 38% on the December 2005 figure of 3.1 billion, and represent an average of 138 million messages per day. On Christmas Day this leapt to 205 million texts, an average of 8 million per hour, with the figure for New Year's Day 2007 even higher reaching a record breaking 214 million, the highest daily total ever recorded by the MDA.

When compared to the mere 42 million messages sent per day five years ago throughout December 2001, it becomes clear just how far the nation has come in embracing text messaging technology which has emerged from a popular craze to becoming an essential communication tool, inclusive to all age groups.

I had thought the Philippines was the texting capital of the world? Although considerinig China's population edge it shouldn't be surprising. What's surprising is India's lack of texting!

According to http://www.cellular.co.za/ - the Phil is still the number 1 texting country in the world. I remember reading an article in the The Manila Times reporting that we reached 5billion text last december 2005. If I remember correctly, it was on the 25th of that month, that both Globe and Smart went dead for 6 hours - because it got overloaded with text.

China is the country with the most mobiles, they overtook the US in 2004.

Come again?

People who will text someone else who's just in another room to fetch something.

...I can sort-of understand that:p Even to the extent of the person being in the same room (but this is out of boredom...)

It's a more convenient every-day intercom  If you've got the text to blow then why not?

My mom calls me LOL. If she's in her room and I'm in mine she'll call me to make me get something for her.

I tell people to text or ring me (instead of physically shouting for me) when I'm listening to music via headphones as I have no way to hear them otherwise... (lit up screen/or if I'm listening via the phone...i'm notified)
