Apologies if this is the wrong forum, but it seems the most likely place to get an answer. I'm currently 17 months into an 18 month contract with T-mobile and contacted them today to give the required 30 days notice. I was told this would incur a £24 cancellation fee, which is basically a penalty. The only way to avoid this fee is to give notice at 18 months. However, as far as I'm concerned this actually makes it a 19 month contract I'm tied into. In my contract it says I will have to pay if I cancel before the end of my contract, but I am not proposing to. I'm just giving notice that I want to cancel as soon as the 18 months is up. Is T-Mobile correct in trying to charge me this fee or am I within my rights to give notice at this stage witout having to pay?

thanks to anybody who takes the time to answer.

IF it were me, I would cancel on the DAY the contract is ending. Its like a lease - you dont want it anymore, so you cancel it. You should not be charged a fee, that is what the time system contract it for. Though I am speaking stricly of Tmobile in the US, I would imagine it could be the same for the UK, EU and elsewhere.

You have to give 30 days notice? Wow! Yeah you should definitely fight with them that having to wait until the end of the 18 month contract to actually give the notice is basically having a 19 month contract, which is not what was agreed to.

I work for o2 customer services and it seems that it is the norm that networks will ask for 30 notice as we do too, however T-mobile cant make you pay the extra month as you only signed into a 18 month term. Their are other methods of disconnecting though you could port to another network or even move to pay as you go as and throw the sim card away this will avoid the 30 day notice. hope this helps

I've had 12 and 18mth contracts with T-mobile for years as it's cheaper to get a new phone on a new contract then it is to upgrade and come the 11th or 17 months I give my 30 notice and thats it, no fees only the usual questions about staying with them or passing the sim onto someone else. Give them another call and ask for the termination of contract account and give 30 days written notice that way.
