Nokia Says iPhone "Quite Interesting"
Thursday, January 11, 2007

Apple's iPhone is an interesting product, but its sales goal is not very high, Anssi Vanjoki, the head of the multimedia unit at Nokia was quoted as saying on Thursday.

Apple unveiled its much-anticipated take on the smart phone on Tuesday, presenting a sleek device with a large screen that combines a phone, an iPod and instant messaging.

"It is quite an interesting product but it is lacking a few essential features, such as 3G, which would enable fast data connections," Vanjoki, whose multimedia unit is a direct rival to Apple, was quoted as saying by Finnish business daily Taloussanomat.

Apple's Chief Executive Steve Jobs said it could sell 10 million iPhones in 2008. This would be roughly 1 percent of the number of mobile phones forecast to be sold that year.

"Apple's objective is not at a very high level," Vanjoki was quoted as saying.

Vanjoki said Apple's entry would give an additional boost to the market and that the iPhone proved Nokia's multimedia strategy was right.

"This is another piece of evidence that we have been on the right track from the beginning," he said.

Nokia said earlier this week it had sold close to 70 million phones with integrated MP3 players last year but analysts say sales of Nokia's music-focused devices account for only a small share of that total.

hehe....I guess so.

But Im sure the they're not going to take this lying down (or is it sitting down?)... within the year, they'll probably come up with a phone of comparable features.

As it is now - their N95 is more feature packed than the iPhone. So that's something to think about.

cheers!

just because its better doesnt mean that it is more likely for people to get it. i mean look at the ipod.. it has soooo many limitations but its been the number1 selling music player for a while now.

My guess is, they will add GSM functionality to the 770 product line. Of course, they are afraid. Thing is, Apple dosnt really have much competition, because they dont look at people like moto nokia and sony-E as competition. It was very bold for apple to release a phone. They know what they are doing..... and now they will be "copied" again.

However, LG already has a phone out (though no announcements) that looks nearly identicle to the applePhone. Interesting stuff - head over to engadget.com or engadgetmobile.com

Its the software that makes things different these days. Its how you do things.

The purpose of a Macintosh phone is to have a phone that PCsuits to a Mac, all Nokia really have to do is bring out that software.

. . . and what are our current mobiles called?

" Windows phones " that's correct :- )

Nokia responds to Apple iPhone - 'it is a surprise that the iPhone is not 3G'

http://techdigest.tv/P1010676-thumb.JPG

So, the Apple iPhone has finally been announced (read all about it here if you're still in the dark). So what does this mean for existing mobile phone makers? I just interviewed Nokia's vice president of Nseries Computers Pekka Pohjakallio at CES, and here's what he had to say, having spent the morning receiving text messages from Nokia's spies watching Steve Jobs' speech.

"I think it confirms our story," he says. "We have been preaching the message of converged multimedia in one device, with lots of use cases and a good experience for the whole life of Nseries. And now Apple have come and said basically the same thing, even if they have implemented some things differently.

"It just confirms our message, and it's good to have others preaching the same message. The best company will win in the end, so I think it's good news for us. It's not a threat, although of course it's hard competition, but that usually makes you perform better yourself."

However, Pohjakallio did point out one possible snag for Apple's iPhone, even if it is well stocked for multimedia features.

"They had music, internet, an email deal with Yahoo and a deal with Google, but it is a 2G device, not 3G, which was a surprise to me," he says. "And it's coming first to the US market with Cingular, so let's see. But overall, it's very exciting for us."

Me too. I was excited at first, but now it's like turning out to be one overhyped product, that's why I found those "10 tips to trick the iPhone" so funny. I think if I going to buy one - I'll wait for the 2nd or 3rd generation.

wow this thread page regarding iphone doesnt have an end huh? but surpringly, we all heard different virtue on each sides, some skeptical from other mobile companies. but where is the challenger phone that will much the iphone on this part of the endless conversation? ( i know there are lots of other companies out there with almost the same technology and specifications of iphone - so this is the time to shine and bring it on... the time is now people) some got the wrong and misunderstanding about this upcoming new hype phone...

so i guess the race and the competition begins of who will finish and will hold the winning trumphy... i will just wait for the next generation or new hype mobile phones. atleast the apple showed us what technology can do huh?

just wait and watch...

Time just came out with a big article on the iPhone, and although I merely skimmed it (I'll read it on the plane later today), all the BIG features they were talking about are all on S60 3rd Edition phones! Of course with the exception of the multi-touch and large screen, but seriously, camera, music player, and full web experience aren't anything new. Sure the GUI's nice and everything, but in the end, the job gets done, right?
