This website details the design and construction Wave Bubble: a self-tuning, wide-bandwidth portable RF jammer. The device is lightweight and small for easy camoflauging: it is the size of a pack of cigarettes.

An internal lithium-ion battery provides up to 2 hours of jamming (two bands, such as cell) or 4 hours (single band, such as cordless phone, GPS, WiFi, bluetooth, etc). The battery is rechargeable via a mini-USB connector or 4mm DC jack (a common size). Alternately, 3 AAA batteries may also be used.

That's quite scary

I want one. This would be ideal for obnoxious people in restaurants or other public places where you could use it just long enough for them to give up.

But honestly, what right have you to do impede on someone else's right to communicate and such. Granted they should probably learn tact, but I hardly think it's your decision whether or not a concerned mother needs to talk to her children or a doctor needs to talk to his patient's nurse when he's on call.

But honestly, what right have you to do impede on someone else's right to communicate and such. Granted they should probably learn tact,I agree they should have tact but if they are already disturbing the peace (violating my civil liberty to peace and quiet) then it's fair game to disturb their peace, your examples are very good but would an air horn or yelling "I DON'T NEED TO HEAR YOUR CONVERSATION ALL THE WAY OVER HERE" be better, that's freedom of speech right? I looked at the site and there's no way I'd bother to spend the effort to get one of those things going.
Anyhow, man has survived so long w/o cellphones, yet now cellphones are a major contributor to autoaccidents so is society really advancing? My point is I agree that people need be more responsible w/their phones. I'm sure you've heard obnoxious ringtones and people yapping like they are having a conversation w/someone across a football field and after a few times what can you do about it? Those are the people I was referring to in regard to this device.

I agree that most of the time they are just being outright annoying and inconsiderate, but the point I'm trying to make is that who knows how important the call they're on is? It could be a business call, it could be an emergency (not just 911 but family or such), or it could simply be girl talk. The point is, it's not right to just whip this out mid-conversation or even pre-conversation just because you yourself don't want to be disturbed because you yourself don't know how important their call is. Hell, if you're really annoyed then go up to them and knock some sense into them. I did that just today when I shushed a stupid obnoxious couple while at the movies. You get more satisfaction out of doing that anyway.
And if they're still difficult and being a jerk, then that's when you can pull this out :p At least you tried to be diplomatic, right?

When I go to the movies, which is the only example I will use - I shut my cell off before I even get in there so nothing is forgotten. I was in a movie once where this woman was talking so lously on her cellphone, she deserved a rock to the face. There are explicit instructions on what do do with pagers and cellphones so you will not disturb the "others" you paid to see the movie. The excuse that "she paid too" is irrelevant, because she cannot watch the movie while talking on the phone with her head up her ass at the same time.
CAN YOU DIG IT

See in that case I'd tell them to shut up. I never turn mine off, just on silent. I know it's far-fetched, but what if an emergency does happen and I have to wait like 2 minutes for my S60 to start up before I can call 911! Not cool.

Some cinemas/concert halls are already lined with material that prevents cellular communications. If there was a need to make emergency calls, there's the landline.
In a cinema, it's not just the idiot who makes a phone call during the film that annoys, it's also those who text and have blindingly bright LCD screens that catch your eye and draw attention away from what's happening on the screen.
There's valid concern for the rights of the person in communication, but what about the person who also has a right to an environment free of their "noise pollution". I will use the (not so good but I can't think so well cos I'm a lil tipsy) analogy of a designated non smoking area.
I get what you're trying to point out though CCT. Also, I never turn mine off in most circumstances where you're meant to :p. But it stays silent and unused, just like you said, in case there is a moment/emergency where I have to use it (and since it's s60, it takes an age to load, which frankly that moment does not need)

Idk in cases such as these the general public shouldn't have to suffer not being able to use their phone just because a certain few abuse it. That's tyranny of the minority right there. People should exercise etiquette, and if they don't, then point it out to them by yelling in their face "SHUT UP!" :p

The site w/info on building the device does say it is pretty much illegal to use so that in itself isn't worth it to me.
@cct - If you yell "SHUT UP" to someone in public, you're pretty much asking to fight that person and all the people they are with. That's not worth it to me. By yelling "SHUT UP" are you any better than the person having a loud conversation on their phone? It's not anyone's job to tell others be to behave. Is fighting more civil than zapping someone's call momentarily?
If people can't get service, what do they normally do...walk around to somewhere where they get service, meaning away from me.

Returning to the analogy of "designated non smoking area";
If a smoker begins smoking in a area for non smokers, other people should not have to tell that individual "STOP SMOKING!!!", because:
1. as said, it might incite an argument and/or "physical negotiations"
2. the individual should not have been smoking there anyways.
It is not so much a debate of a person being prohibited to use their phone in general, but using it in places where it is already stated that they should not use it.
If you want to smoke - go to a smoking area.
i.e. if you want to make calls, step out of the cinema (or whatever place prohibits calls) and do it (except planes of course :p)

I suppose that's not the smartest thing, but if I'm mad or annoyed enough I'll still do it.:o I haven't had to deal with people talking in the movies obnoxiously thankfully...my main experience has been at airports and such, in which case I just leave them alone.
