Brando Workshop has unveiled a pair of Zoom Telescopes for cellphones of the Nokia and Sony Ericsson kind. This means you no longer have to put up with your cellphone camera's near-sightedness as you can zoom in up to 6 times on objects that stand afar. Each of these Zoom Telescopes come with a durable strap that holds it in place while you go about snapping photos, but it will definitely make you look ridiculous, putting up with funny stares of people around. The Sony Ericsson model is compatible with the K750i, W800i, W810i, W550i, and W600i handsets while the Nokia model works with the N70, N72, 6230, 6230i, 6680, 6600, 6630, 7610, and 6681 cellphones. Each Zoom telescope retails for $19.

Would it not work with the E70? Nice concept, but again seems kinda pointless in the real world. Looks quite silly.

I've seen something like this before a while ago, it seems like there was a missed oppurtunity to increase the final lens aperture to let more light in for brighter images.

Looks quite silly.

Quite?:D

lol, any one got any sample images?

My N93 photos loses so much light when using optical zoom.

Yeh please post a real sample pic - I can see these being useful but it's not exactly pocketable.....I'd rather slip my T7 in my pocket and take better snaps...

I'd rather take my hypothetical water and shock proof Olympus 720SW :p

Add an Optical 6x Telephoto Lens to Your Camera Phone for just a $20

The Mobile Phone Telescope Lens adds a 6 x zoom lens to your humble phonecam handset which is pretty amazing.

Mobile phones with cameras are proving to be immensely useful for many purposes, mainly because they have the advantage of always being with you.

Sadly, the evolution of many potential niche markets is being held back by phone manufacturers who wish to sell you their latest 2MPX and no optical zoom model th.. .. .

Interesting idea... I think the main reason that optical zoom is so crap (erm, low magnification) is focal length. To be magnified the light requires a certain length to be achieved between lenses, which requires (usually) a tube shaped container which adds bulk and increases phone size. It's clear with this product about the length problem... but for $20 it's almost why not get it right ? :)

I say "usually": large focal length camera lenses mounted onto military spy satellites have focal length of several metres (!!) and more - this is achieved by bending rays of light with mirrors through the satellite. This technology will probably make it's way onto mobile phone (and other) cameras at some point but it's way too expensive to produce at the moment.

I wonder what happens if you attach this lens to a N73 with 4x zoom - does it do 10x now? Also - wuld auto-focus work through this lens, anyone know?

Im thinking, does adding an optical zoom actually improve the quality of the photo? It doesn't change the megapixels, doesn't change the colors, if something - the photos might be darker or brighter?

This can only be useful if the subject is far away. Otherwise, in most situations, I think this would be unecessary.

A lot of times though I find myself taking pictures of things that are far away...and being left with nothing else than digital zoom have to use it.

It would be a nice accessory, although in the real world it'd have to be an opportune moment for you to have this right at the time you want or need it.

From the article:

Last but not les important, no matter how attractive it looks like I've got some reports that these lenses are absolute utter crap, it seams that adding such a lens cause bad picture quality and accessory isn’t very stabile also, it keep falling off...

However, in my personal opinion, it’s more than obviously that it isn't serious photography equipment!? I mean x6 telephoto lens for 20$ mounted on crappy small phones optic will reduce amount of light that can reach usually small CMOS sensor like we have on mobile phones nowadays and therefore image quality should be reduced a lot! Its more like a joke and don’t take it so much seriously, I’ve just found it attractive and that’s it.. ..
