If it were at the stage of being new, there would be specs, a real photo - (this isnt even a computer rendering) not something that was crawn with a crayon. In any event, this looks like the merging of the 9500 and an E series phone.

I like the "design" somewhat. Rumoured specs aren't anything to be blown away by though.

its just a sketch... i doubt the final product (if there is going to be one) will look like this.

E90; The Next Communicator?

http://www.symbian-freak.com/images/news/06/11/e90tm.jpg (http://www.symbian-freak.com/news/006/11/e90.htm)

I’ve found it few days ago and I wasn’t quite sure whether to post this but I’ve just decide to inform you about.

As you may already noticed we’ve got lot of upcoming phone rumors lately, and this is just another one, not so realistic in my personal opinion, mainly because whole story is based on sketch that has been found in Nokia's documents.

Of course, sketches looks like some kind of the Nokia Communicator successors, another addition in this family although some sources claims that th.. ..

If anything as you mentioned I would guess this could be a replacement for the communicator range seeing that the 9300/i and 9500 are getting on in mobile phone terms.

Would make a nice alternative to the 9XXX series style.

guys this is for real now....

From My-Symbian com (Michal Jerz):
"I spent an hour today playing with the new Communicator. The rumours are correct - it's called E90 and the product code is RA-6.

What can I say about it? GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ, it's BEAUTIFUL! I wish I could simply show you the pictures but I can't do this. The product is still strictly embargoed and I'd probably be in trouble if I published its photos. I actually haven't taken any pictures because I was afraid that I couldn't resist showing them to you (and getting in trouble) That's the disadvantage of running an official and legal website based in a civilized country - you can get sued anytime. Unlike anonymous hacker portals based in countries where "law" is a word from a foreign language... they can review early prototypes and nobody can do anything to them as nobody can find them So, for now, my description has to be enough. Hopefully I will be able to get a review unit from Nokia when they become available and prepare the website and a professional, detailed review for you all....

First of all, as I wrote, the device is BEAUTIFUL! The best looking Communicator ever. It's wider than 9500 but shorter and thinner. It's more square'ish than the 9500/9300. It's got FANTASTIC hinges that feel extremely solid and look very stylish. They're located on both ends of the device and they're very large. The external casing of the device is silver plastic while the hinges are shiny like chrome or nickel plated - superb! The whole inside of the device, including the keyboard, is black plastic, which looks really GREAT.

The device is based on S60 3rd Edition (3.1, Feature Pack 1). It's a clamshell like all older Communicators and it has two screens. The external screen is 240x320 (it's a typical S60 3rd Edition screen) while the internal screen is........... 800x352 pixels!!!! YES! It's large and it's of fantastic quality! It shows the same UI as the external screen but in a different resolution which looks like three E61 screens in a row The nicest thing is that all applications can be run on EITHER of the screens. You can launch a program on the external screen, open the flip and continue working with the program on the internal screen. And vice versa! No more restricted, almost useless cover UI which can't do anything but phone calls and access to SMS/contacts. Now you get FULL access to the entire OS from BOTH sides. The UI and all applications automatically rescale themselves to the right resolution. The internal screen is NOT touch sensitive.[/U]

The keyboard is VERY convenient. As I wrote, it's black. It's more square'ish than 9500's keyboard because the whole device is wider, the keys are bigger and are much more convenient than in 9500. In general, typing experience is the best of all Communicators released so far. The Enter key is big and square. The 5-way key (or is it 9-way key? I don't know) inside looks almost identical as the one outside. It has a separate shiny silver "ring" for directions and a separate black central button. It's twice larger than 9500's rocker key. FINALLY a truly convenient controller!

The inner screen has four buttons, but unlike in 9500/9300 there are two large buttons on each side of the screen. And again, it's much more convenient than having all buttons on one side.

The E90 has a built-in GPS (it's a normal GPS, not AGPS). I couldn't check it, but it is said to be supporting HSDPA. Besides that, it's obviously 3G/EDGE/WiFi. Its USB port is finally a standard mini-USB! I couldn't check memory size or CPU type/speed, but I believe that it is ARM11 (OMAP 2420) based and has a clock speed of 330 MHz or more.

The device has two cameras, one high resolution camera with LED flash on the back side (sorry, I had no time to check the resolution, but it's definitely several MPix) and the usual low-res cam for video calls inside, on the left side of the internal screen.

The UI inside and system applications look like S60 3rd Edition, the device has the standby screen known from the latest S60v3 phones (including the active part) and also the typical S60 menu with folders. Applications like Contacts, Calendar, etc. are tweaked for the high resolution of the internal screen. I mean, on the external display they look and work like on any "normal" S60 3rd Ed. phone e.g. N80, but on the internal screen they make good use of the much increased resolution and screen area. For instance, Contacts have the list of your contacts on the left side while the selected contact data is shown immediately on the right side, like in older Communicators, so there is no need to click each contact to open it's card and then go back to the list. I had no time to check all system apps in detail but it looks that all system applications including Calendar etc. will be much extended compared to standard S60 3rd Ed. phones and I'm sure that they will not be lacking functionality or ease of use compared to older Communicators. I know that this is what some people were afraid of. Don't be. The unit I tested didn't have full set of applications, for example the Office folder was still empty, which is the best proof that Nokia works on the applications for the new Communicator and not just takes them from the existing S60 devices without any modifications.

Well, that's all for now. I've heard that the E90 will be announced either in December or in January and it's supposed to be launched in Spring 2007, so it's really soon!

You know that I am a big fan of the UIQ platform and the P990, but after playing with the E90 today all I can say is: goodbye P990, welcome E90, my new LOVE! Yes, it's the best Symbian OS based device I've seen (at least when it comes to how it looks and what its tech specs are; it's too early to judge its stability and functionality of the system software).

P.S. Oh, I forgot, it supports Micro SD cards. The card slot is on the bottom, close to the USB port. "

Michal had already removed this thread at my-symbian, but i was able to get it from another forum... all we need now are real photos...

GOODBYE N95!!! and i am holding off all phone purchases for now, well maybe in the next 3 months only...

For two years I used a Nokia 9290, the old communicator. It was a very very powerful cellphone/PDA, but … it was too big.

If you wear a suit or at least a jacket all the time, then the impact of the size is mitigated. But if you wear trousers and shirts like I do (my home city averages 28°C or 82°F), then the size of the communicator becomes an issue. The 9500 is 1 cm smaller than the old 9290, but I think it is still too big to carry in a pocket.

I changed my 9290 for a 7610 and a bt keyboard. Now I am waiting for the N95.

Anyway, I need to see the E90 to believe in it…

And who told you that the E90 is ONLY business oriented? It's not even announced yet. If it was a purely business phone, would it have stereo sound or FM radio? Oh, right, you didn't even know it has.

@ Chokia,

1. Nice pics
2. Thumbnails please
3. Quite like this E90 too difenbaker. Aesthetically, it's the best looking communicator to date right? Opened, it's quite elegant! (See how simple black makes anything look good, Nokia?) Not only that, it's one heck of a powerful smartphone (at proto stage)!

Here's some links you guys should check out:

MobileBurn Snapshot: http://www.mobileburn.com/review.jsp?Id=3130
My Symbian Review, with clean pics and comparison shots with other communicators. http://my-symbian.com/s60v3/review_e90.php
2.5mm jack though?

S60 on super wide screen just looks fantastic no?:wav: Pity the standby screen doesn't seem to take advantage of that.

Video at VGA 25FPS Mono, 3.2mp non CZ - Imo that's quite good enough (Sample shots shown are poor subjects, but I'd assume that photo wise, the N93 with it's CZ wouldn't beable to do any better)

Other big notable plusses, Widescreen GPS and external screen can fully utilise the S60 UI!

What I like the most...80MB free ram on an S60 device!!!! 80! That should mean hiccup free multitasking on S60! So you can install all them fully compatible 3rd edition S60 apps and have several running without worry of a crash! Wonderful!

I AM SO EXCITED!!! Excited enough to start starving myself so I can afford it. hehe not really...but seriously I've been missing my 9500 immensely. While it was slow and bulky, I just abolutely loved the form factor and everything. I'm loving the 3.2MP camera with flash AND autofocus (that's definitely glorious)! Definitely nice that Nokia adapted S60 to make it seem like the defunct S80. But at $1000 probably will be a pipe dream for me for a while :o:(

Is the QWERTY keyboard slighly raised like on a regular computer keyboard? Unless my eyes and depth perception deceive me, that's what I'm seeing.

Brilliant! I just need to find $1000 though.

You know it's three years since the 9500 was announced back at 3GSM in Cannes. Although I like the 9500, it's definitely getting a bit on the old side.. and if you remember the old 9210i, well that was very out of date when the 9500 came along. (And the 9300 and 9300i are just cut down 9500s).

Nokia just don't turn around these Communicator devices quickly enough. I know that they had to redesign S60 for the E90 platform after dropping Series 80, but even so.. three years is a long time!

I am about to forget all my “issues” while using my Nokia 9290. It was a very powerful PDA. But it was too big to carry as an all day phone. I asked many times my carrier if I can have the same number in two phones, but the answer was always no. So now with all the photos and specs, I am feeling just like back in 2003: this is all you ever want and need packed in one gadget. But… it is worth the size??? In all my meetings in or outside my office (I work in the legal department of an oil, gas and energy producing company) it was ok, big screen, querty keyboard. But, … going to play football (soccer for Americans) or volleyball with that big cell phone in my pocket again??? I think I will keep in mind the N95 and my BT keyboard…

yup.

and another thing that makes this a winner is that... you dont have to search for non-existent series 80 apps! All the apps that's on the N73, N80 and all the 3rd ed phones will run on this.

That's gotta be cool!

Both E90 and N95 have stereo speakers and support for A2DP.

My-symbian review confirms this for the E90.

Zeiss or not, Autofocus makes this phone a winner.
Definitely my thinking!
Definitely...S80 is for communicator devices, like the 9500 and 9300(i). The only way I would see a foreshadowing to S80's demise is if a communicator-style phone had S60 or some other platformHAHAHAHAHAHAHA so I'm guessing S80 is now dead

I'm going off on a tangent, but it still bothers me that InfoSyncWorld said that the E90 foregoed (?) the "touchscreen S80" for the S60. It's like, "People, the touchscreen-version of S80 was S90!!" But now I can't find the article where they said that, so they must've realized their horrific mistake :o

Very good photos indeed! The over-processed "painting" power from other Nokia phone's camera are gone, no more "striking" effect but just plain good photos, I'm impressed, :)

I think they're the same. (since the E90 runs on the same 3rd edition symbian) I think the only difference is the E90 has a widescreen version of the same map?

francisofarabia

I am hoping beyond hope that the E90 will come to T-Mobile!!!

Although it's curious how the American 2100MHz is left out. I thought T-Mobile was going to use both 1700 and 2100 since that's what they got in the AWS auction?
