Know there has been past chats on this but I am embarking on a massive music ripping fest since I have found that the WMA 128kbps I previously ripped at is great on my Rio Karma(s) of 3 years but sounds poor on my Alpine DVD in my car..

What do you play digital music on and what differences have you noticed....

So a poll if you please - what do you rip at (Shun + co I'm ready for you) and what do you play it in most regulary....

BTW 193 is the new 192 MP3 ripping speed - doh you now what I meant...

Atrac3plus 128 kbit/s or MP3 192 kbit/s

What have I noticed when palying digital music?

1. Sony players can only ever achieve near(ok, half) stated battery using sony formats.

2. 64 kbit/s atrac is nothing like 128 kbit/s mp3. Noticably worse.

3. I hate that format and sony mp3 players.

Jose - riddle me this (as been bugging me for a while now - what happens whe your sony dies and that format is only supported on other devices - i.e do you have to re rip all your music to fit your next player ? or have you converted from mp3s ?

I am on my last Rio Karma after stashing 2 new back up ones a few years so when my last back up one dies I will be in a pickle - I have allot of tracks where I have lost the original cd's + unique cd's I have collected over the years..they differ in format from wma to FLAC...

So when I eventually have to replace with another player in a year or so I have a variety of formats that won't play as sweetly as my current player does...and found all conversion tools lossy with some types of track...

Yes, that's why I hate it.

As well as ripping remaining cd's I had to atrac, I also stupidly decided to convert majority of current stored files to atrac and deleted the mp3 (originally ripped for my iRiver H320, r.i.p.). So yes, you're right. This means when my sony player dies, so will all the effort.

Computers can't even play the format unless you install some sony software. And when they do, it's a miracle if you can get errorless transfers. It's quite a common sight to see your 8000 song library wiped for no reason.

I'm gonna give it away as a 'christmas gift'...haven't been using it at all. I'm gonna get the official speakers and just add my nwa3000 to it.

I haven't thought about converting though - it was possible anything to atrac but the other way around...I'll have to google it :) But like you said, the outcome of converting those will inevitably give me reduced quality. Personally, great quality audio is very important to me so it looks like the inevitable search, sit and rip. (Damn, the thought of having to search for my albums and rip them again! I've boxed whole loads along with old games and stuff....sigh...unless...I buy another.........damn you sony!)

MP3 320 kbps for me.

I want to try other formats but if you have different players - it'll be one heck of a task always converting, just to get the right sound on each. At the very least - mp3 is the one that's universally supported.

cheers!

MP3 128k because it still sounds decent but doesn't take up that much room.

What do you guys think though is best for say on a Nokia music phone?

You an Shun really are purists. Can you really tell the difference on your respective players ? does any type of music benefit from ripping at that level ?

You can really tell if you have the right speakers. And I think it's more noticeable on acoustic music. But with phones I think a mid-level rip is fine.

Is anybody using Audacity? Is there a way to filter out the lyrics and just retain the music? (in audacity).

There was another software I found that did that...

..it also removed certain instruments if need be...but I forget...(I think it had the word boy in it:rolleyes:)

Failing that, you could seach for the instrumental version already made by someone else:)
