Motorola today unveiled the MPx200 smartphone, their first smartphone based on the Microsoft Smartphone 2002 OS. The MPx200 marks the first phone released by a major manufacturer with the Smartphone OS. The MPx200 is targeted at the business user with tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900), a 200MHz Intel XScale processor, 32MB of RAM, 32MB of ROM, and a SD/MMC expansion slot. The internal screen is a TFT 65K color unit, while the external screen will be simple monochrome.

I got to play with the MPx200 for a little bit today and noticed one major flaw: When the phone is ringing, and you DO NOT want to pick it up, there is no way to divert the call to voicemail or turn the ringer off. If you open the flip, it wil automatically answer the phone. None of the buttons on the sides do anything to divert the call to voicemail.
Anyone know a workaround or has Moto forgot something major here?

Well, at minimum I suspect that you can make the flip passive.
Then you would have to actively hit a button to answer a call, or hit end to divert it.
I haven't used it, so I can't say for sure. But most clamshells seem to work that way.

You're probably right on making it passive, however, it's annoying having to flip and then press a button to talk on the phone.
My samsung flip, although old, has the ability to send callers to voicemail, or at least silence the ringer with the clam closed.

I wouldn't be suprised if it's a feature that is not implemented yet. When a phone is released to the public, it's not necessarily fully implemented software etc. That's why it isn't on sale as soon as it becomes known to public. It's just in the works still.
It may be a major design flaw, but it could be a hardcoded fix for show and tell.
Microsoft has snared another hungry company... Can I come too?

This is probably a stupid question considering it is a Microsoft operating system, but does anyone have a clue on whether this phone will be compatible with Apple's computers and more specifically, iSync?

the jog dial on the side does in fact do this. When a call is being recieved, press down once to silence the call and a second time to drop the call.

For what it's worth, I picked up an MPx200 on 24Oct2003 and have been using it for the past few weeks. I'm planning on returning it. The major flaws I see are battery life, missing basic phone features, very limited wireless connectivity options, and no support for PocketPC2003.
I'm at the point where it has to be charged up each night. I use about 15-60 minutes of talk time a day, the rest of the battery goes to calendaring and task management - and its not that much.
I'm unable to get it to work with Windows Media Player (for downloading music) and some other applications when it is infrared connected; so getting files to it over the infrared is sometimes impossible, but always slow.
There's not a vibrate ring option nor a caller ID on the lid display - so you have to flip it open just to see who's calling.
Syncing with two PCs - home and work - prevents e-mail sync - I think that's an Active-Sync issue. At home I use a VPN to get to the office, syncing over the VPN is a one-way exercise. I'm told that I need PocketPC 2003 for better VPN handling. I still have not been able to get emails working properly, plus AT&T doesn't have the best plans for data (upper limit is 8Meg per month for $20 - I think).
Forget about Pocket Internet Explorer on he MPx200 - I'd rather have my old T721 for reduced content screens. The MPx200 takes for ever to generate a page, you spend real minutes scrolling around, usually you can't get what you want anyway, and AT&T is rolling the meter the whole time. My first three weeks amassed $100 in data charges and I can only remember one time that I really got what I wanted when I went to the browser.
I'd appreciate any other feedback.

I have heard that the MPX220 is coming out next year and addresses many of these problems

I heard the upgrade to the MPx200 is coming out in FEB04, and will include PocketPC2003 and bluetooth, as well as fill in the gaps on the basic phone functions missing from the MPx200.
Also, I've heard from AT&T that they are seeing a lot of the MPx200s coming back into the store before the 30 days is up.
I've returned mine and am waiting on the upgraded phone in Feb04 (hopefully).
