Remembrance Poppies on Mobile Phones

The UK's Royal British Legion has turned to mobile content for their annual fund-raising based around the Armistice Day memorial. By texting the word POPPY to 85099, supporters can download one of three Poppy images to their mobile phone in return for a donation of £1.50. There are three downloads to choose from with the option of two animated versions or a simpler static version. Each one features the Poppy icon with the words 'Remember' and the time and date of the Two Minute Silence on 11th November.

By downloading the Poppy, donors will also receive a text reminder on the day before 11th November to remind them to pause for the Two Minute Silence. It is hoped that this will encourage donors to think more about the significance of the Poppy icon and wider message of Remembrance and the human cost of war.

Money donated to Appeal funds Poppy Support which provides a range of welfare services to serving and ex-Service people and their families.

Russell Thompson, Director of Fundraising and Marketing for The Royal British Legion, said: "We're very excited about this new fundraising initiative which will help us reach out to a new generation of donors and supporters. We hope that the downloads will raise money for veterans of all conflicts - both young and old - and help us reach our £26 million target."
Mobile entertainment company, the Pocket Group, are providing the technical support for the mobile phone downloads.

Although this new donor mechanism is designed to help the Poppy Appeal reach out to a new generation of supporters, the traditional lapel poppy will remain the focus of the campaign with poppies available from Saturday 28th October throughout the two-week Remembrance period up until Saturday 11th November.
