View Full Version : What is the "usable" memory in S60 phones?

I think that most will advice that it's better not to use up ALL of the internal memory of a series60 phone. I've personally tried that - and sometimes, the phone hangs, or sometimes resets or restarts by itself. And if it does not hang or reset - it slows down to a crawl when performing tasks.
So this brings me to ask the question - HOW MUCH memory of the phone's internal memory is actually "usable" by the owner? 50%? 25%? 10%? 5% For example, your phone has 20MB of internal memory, should the user just use 50% of that so that it will not affect the performance?

That's a good question. I don't know the answer, but to be on the safe side I don't put anything on the phone memory at all. I buy high-capacity memory cards and put everything on them. That way the phone runs smoothly. No resets, no hangs. Also, that way, if something happens to the phone and I need to reset it to factory settings or upgrade its firmware, I've got all my data on the memory card.

Good question.
I find it mind-boggling, that if asked, most people will want the highest internal memory to be in their phones. Yet in real life - they all end up using the external memory card instead.
What's the use of wanting a high internal memory then?

Is there a way to let the webrowser (say, in an E70) use the external memory card for its cache/bookmarks and so on?
well on my n93, I put everything i can on the memory card, but it still hangs and crashes.
I have about 50% free. the only thing on the phone are sms messages, and whatever was pre-installed.

Well I'd like a large internal memory because I use up memory very quickly on the card when I'm out taking photos. Sometimes, there maybe certain information/applications that I'd want to still function when I switch cards, and those applications may be quite big. E.g. Sat Nav.
But I get what you mean, for most people who get high capacity cards, large internal memory isn't as important.
Imo 20mb is the minimum for usable nternal memory. In my N73 I've moed as much as I can into the card leaving me about 43mb on the phone. (That's like special reserve incase the card gets full :D)
Anyway, to answer the question, the actual usable memory left for S60 users vary, depending on how much things have been pre-installed into your device.
I've not experienced any performance changes when having I.M. completely used up or not (apart from sending or receiving files over BT as you need at least that file size free in the phone - if you've set save to phone)
The RAM I think is completely different from the storage memory- that's the thing (or lack of it) is what normally causes my phone to crash. I NEED MORE POWER!!!!:disgust:

waytaminit the internal memory runs the apps so the more memory you have the less problems you will have and things should hopefully run smoothly.

I dunno know for sure about S60 but I'd surmise it's similar to WM: that OS reads the amount of internal memory when it's installed (or run first, whatever) and takes 50% for itself and leaves the rest for applications & data.
Personally I haven't noticed any speed changes (in S60) when my internal RAM is 99% or 1% free. Internal RAM is faster in operation than external memory so it's a good idea to store images or video, if you can, when you're shooting it to get the faster write times. And the same goes for loading applications, so for anything that you use a lot or takes a long time to load internal RAM is better - same for apps that have intensive reading & writing, they'll be faster on internal RAM.
