cbc.caWomen gaming online outnumber men 2 to 1: report
Twice as many women as men in the United States play online video games, turning the conventional wisdom on its ear, a new report suggests.
Of the online gamers surveyed in a Nielsen Entertainment survey, 64 per cent were female.
In the broader video game sphere, male gamers still outnumber women overall by a factor of two to one, according to the report released on Thursday.
The Nielsen survey also suggested that about eight per cent of gamers are at least 45 years old, but teenagers still make up the largest portion of all gamers, representing 40 per cent of those who play games.
The survey looked at 2,200 gamers in July who own at least one game device — including game consoles, hand-held devices and PCs.
There are about 117 million video game players over the age of 13 in the United States, 56 per cent of whom play online.

Casual and Female Gamers to Drive Mobile Games Revenues
3D and multiplayer games may grab the games technology headlines, but it is mass market casual games that will drive market growth over the next three years, says Juniper Research in its latest study of the global mobile games market. Games that utilise the inherent strengths of the mobile platform, rather than try to replicate console, or PC games on a small mobile phone handset will be key.
In addition to the traditional core 12-25 age male electronic games players, older players and female players are becoming increasingly influential. The first generation of electronic games playing kids are now in their middle ages and many are looking for ways to continue to play games suited to their hectic lifestyles. Female games players are also emerging as a powerful market force, as more and more games designed with the female psyche in mind are brought to the market.
Juniper Research estimates that global revenues for mobile games will grow from US$3 billion in 2006 to US$10.5 billion in 2009. Looking further into the future, continued growth of mobile subscribers in developing markets and a continuation of the demographic shift will propel the global mobile games market to annual revenues of $17.6 billion. This will produce a cumulative revenue stream of nearly $57 billion over the six years. The Asia Pacific region has dominated the market since its inception, with the Japanese and South Korean markets in the vanguard. Asia Pacific is forecast to contribute 38% of cumulative revenues 2006 to 2011, Europe 31% and North America 22%.
Bruce Gibson, Research Director at Juniper Research says "I think mobile games have come of age. They are no longer the poor relations of console and PC games. They are a different family of entertainment products with its own family characteristics. There is a strong demand for mobile entertainment and games are at the heart of it. The casual games sector is going to be the market driver, even though it may not be at the leading edge of mobile games technology. Casual games make most use of the inherent advantages of the mobile platform. People want to fill "dead time" with easy to use, but fun games. This is the same in just about every culture."
He went on to say: "A lot of market and media focus is currently on mobile music and TV. However Juniper believes that over the next three to five years mobile games offer almost as much revenue earning potential for service providers as mobile music and mobile TV."

There is a very good reason for this and I am pretty sure 90% would involve impule snack foods and the inability to mix with "social" crowds....
