Failing grade: Actress Milla Jovovich in leggings and a mini.

If skin-flashing styles were the scourge of schools a few years ago, more covered-up looks are the bane of today's dress codes.

Among the banned: teen staples such as hoodies and cargo pants, as well as that back-to-the-past trend, leggings. Once deemed too sexy, now student dress is seen as too casual.

"Three years ago, if we were having this conversation, it would be about the belly," says Mary Lou Andre, a Needham, Mass.-based fashion and image consultant whose clients include parents struggling with their children's back-to-school shopping lists. "Now it is more baggy, more layered, more '80s." And "when clothes get too lax, morale goes down."

Educators' attention has shifted from bra straps and bare midriffs to safety and security. Hoodie pouches and cargo pants pockets have proven handy hiding spots for school contraband — from the dangerous (weapons) to the distracting (cellphones and iPods) — so administrators are prohibiting them. "There is an interesting tape our sheriff showed us of all the kinds of things that can be hidden in the large pockets of cargo pants," says Harbor Creek (Pa.) School District superintendent David Smith.

I would be really surprised if this was adopted by every school board. :bs:

In my school there was a dress code with over 80 different requirements, however 3 of those requirements were actually enforced.

So now if you want to bring in contraband, you are forced to put it in your backpack or the pocket of your jeans/khakis?

maybe they should just make everyone wear a uniform and have the same haircut too? it's funny how the dress code controversy is always viewed as some kind of loss of freedom, education ain't free if somebody's tax dollars are paying for it! what happened to just focusing on education while at school? I'm all for kids not dressing like little thugs and tightening the grips so that the emphasis is on learning something.
