I guess it's purely down to its updated looks over the W800/W700 series. Internally, the only/main upgrade is the EDGE technology but if you simply use your phone for calls/texts/camera then there's no big advantage.

EDGE is useless in places they don't use it, I would rather have seen UMTS support (I know that is what the K800i fixes).
The only nice thing the W810i brings is a fresh and attractive design, but it's not worth it over, say, a K750i which does almost everything as well and probably about a quarter the price.
It also has known and unfixed bugs, like the flashing light during video sequences.

The thing that is frequently forgotten in w810 is it's excellent stereo sound quality. There's not a lot of phones out there that is versatile and yet, comes with an excellent music playing capability.
I understand that many did not like dedicated music fones, since some features were sacrificed in place of good music quality otherwise, would've made the fone very expensive.. But if you're like me that doesn't want carry a mp3 player and fone, just one, then w810 is exellent in this aspect.
But I'd prefer the N91, due to some extra features that I needed badly, like wifi :D.. But if my needs were different, I'd sure get the w810 for the much lower price, smaller size and weight, and it's more powerful bass :D. But wait, that quadband might come in handy....

i know, but still its a feature nonetheless, plus the OP asked why its so popular, in US it is very popular cause of Quadband + edge, just check out hofo. its a blessing to them after the V3 was the only properly sold quadband phone.
and the camera is far better than okay, if the k750 still holds the throne for best 2mp camera out there, that means the w810 has the best 2mp camera out there.

i never use 3g or gprs or edge, but US tends to go crazy over it cause 3g isnt supported there yet. again, im just answering OPs query as to why its so popular. yes the k750 does hte same thing, or even a w800. but the design is one thing most people wanted. i used to go on and on on this forum about how badly i wanted a black w800. and voila. yes w800 is cheaper and does the same thing, but coem on..its black!

yeah, the mp3 player is what people tend to forget. im a admitted audiophile, i have to have good quality, and ive owned countless mp3 players, and i still do. when i was low on money and had to sell them off i still had my w800, and i used it for audio purposes, and it was good enough, and im extremely picky. right now the wxxx series still holds the throne as best mp3 player phone. plus the 4gb 8gb cards will coem out soon(its out but really expensive) and then 4gb = highest capacity nano. so this phone would be a replacement for a nano user.
the n91 is good, but some how its really finnicky and there are still thigns about design that i dont like. like as Deviant said the w810 does have bugs, but thats only after you use it for awhile you notice it. the n91 has things you see that you already know are gona pose a problem, first the tiny buttons, then the size, and personally id never trust a smartphone as an mp3 player device.i know theoretically the n91 isnt a smartphone, but imo it runs symbian, its a smartphone. if it ran series40 and no wifi, bigger buttons, then i might consider it has a mp3 playerp hone. cause 1.it would be cheaper, 2.lesser bugs.

1 question: hows the center key? i once had a w800 and the joystick malfunctioned after 2 months of use and i'm not a heavy user. does the new center key been improved?

It would seem to be since it's a dedicated button...the one on the W800 was just as you said a joystick and hence more prone to malfunction.

I didn't forget that, the sound quality is identical to the K750i which is in turn identical to the W800i.

i hope the audio volume of the w810 is much louder than the k750? isn't it that's the common complaints among k750 users (like me)?!

W810i is loud and clear at high volumes - beter than the k750 - tried flashing with the latest software boosted mine a bit plus sped up operation...

Another thing is that the W810 has buttons for both shortcut menu and walkman player... The screen size of K750/W800 is said to be 1.8 and W810 to be 1.9...
