View Full Version : Which SE cell to choose ?
Hi guys, kinda new here and to the business of mobile phones, at least the new generation. Was hopping for some professional help on buying a new cell.
I'm kinda keen on making it an SE, but I need advise on which one.
Those feature kind of important :
1) Don't need it to be an Mp3 player.
2) Need a good camera inside (so I won't need to buy one)
3) Long battery life (as I understand, most of them are long lasting)
4) A built in speaker.
5) Best sound quality.
6) low radiation.
7) connectivity to a computer.
8) Attractive design.
Throw me my choices

I would still suggest getting a dedicated camera...if not, then wait a few years for the camera technologies to get on par with an average digicam.

well, it really comes down to how much money you're willing to spend for this phone. nevertheless i will tell you a few phone that fit your specifications.
the first 2 cameras i listed is not SE but it does fit what you want.
1. the 5 Megapixel camera phone which you can get from ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com/SUPER-PHONE-Review-SAMSUNG-SCH-S250-5-megapixel-camera_W0QQitemZ5843370109QQihZ008QQcategoryZ35156 QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
2. the 7 Megapixel camera phone which you can also get from ebay, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5849512349&ssPageName=MERC_VI_RSCC_Pr4_PcY_BIN_Stores_IT
3. the SE K800i, http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Sony-Ericsson-K800i-K800-1GB-M2-Card-Bluetooth_W0QQitemZ160005123787QQihZ006QQcategoryZ 64355QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
You know, I would recommend the K750. It satisfies all that criteria, and short of the K800, it still has one of the best cameras on the market today. If you are willing to spend the money, go with the K800, but the K750 is a bargain these days.

mmm... there's also the w800, which is identical to the k750, but has a flight-mode.
cheers!

Or W810, for that matter.

Any reason to choose the K750 over the W810?

Price, design. Benefit of the W810 would also be design, plus the Walkman app.
Thanx all !
I was thinking about the K750i allot and the K800i (does it worth the extra money ? camerawize) I won't use the 3G.
The w800 is a waste of MY money, I don't need a player, got a fine iRiver 20G.
Is it safe buying those phones on Ebay ? Will I need to care about the phone malfunctioning alot ? with no warrenty anything that'll happend I'm doomed for over pricing cell repair shop.

If you do not need 3G get the k790i, more or less the same apart from the 3G!

Phones are OEM, so it's the same as what you're gonna get elsewhere.
You have a manufacturers warranty, so unless your phone break after that, you should be just fine.

that's not true, maybe only here in Israel, if you don't buy it through the service provider, and you don't pay insurance for it , then you're ****ed if anything happens to it.
You can't go to Nokia headquarters here and say :"I just broke my phone I bought in Thailand, please fix it."
anyways I think I'll just have it insured for my peace of mind
Besides that where's the cheapest place in the world to buy mobiles phones in general and SE phones in specific?
And when does the K790 arrive to the stores ? (pretty sure it's my final choice)

IMHO, I'd choose the K800 as it seems to meet your criteria best. I've own/owned the T610, T630, K750, W800 and now the K800 .. and the K800 has IMO the most flexible user friendly camera. The batt life seems to be slightly down on the W800 but that seems to be the sacrifice for all the features SE have crammed in.
If you opt for the W800 series, stick with the W800 itself as the W810 gives little improvement to meet your needs.
I hope this helps .. :)
Thanks rabvtec, though as I understand the K790 and the K800 are almost identical except the VGA cam in the front for the 3G. Does the K800 have better/more features in the camera mode ? if there's a major difference in price between the two (more then $50), and most of the features are the same, I think I'll go with the K790. The WXXX series are out of the question simply because I won't be using the phone for music at all. and if those cells are music dedicated I'd bet you sacrifice something else...

Im in the same situation. I have the w800 and its a nice phone. going to go for the K800 as it has a music player similar to that of the W8 and has that 3.2 mpx camera which is nice. Plus all the other features i think its a phone well worth having
If you have a SE phone, you have a SE warranty. As long as it's not your fault, (i.e. water damage) and you don't mention that you bought it from another country, you should be fine.
edit: I have gotten most of my phones off eBay, and anytime something's gone wrong (which isn't often), SE has always honored my warranty.

They normally ask you where you got it from or produce a receipt so they can verify how old it is. Even if the phone hasn't been out over a year they are still difficult. Nokia used to be ok but start checking more now, SE the same (like you said, you may get away with it and be lucky). Motorola are just downright difficult, not only do I not want to deal with them again nor do I want to buy another one of their phones.
Back to topic, get a K790i or K800i probably if the 3mpix camera is important (of course, the Xenon flash is something good the older K750i, etc. can't offer). As you don't need 3G, you might lean towards the K790i but if you want to save a bit, get a K750i, the extra 1mpix isn't that noticeable in some situations and it was and still is a shining example of how to make a very decent phone. It does have MP3, etc. but you don't need to use it. Battery life is also stunning, I have had mine on for 10 days standby with light use. The only complaint I ever heard about the K750i was its joystick which is apparently easy to break.

Actually, I've been pretty lucky then. All they've ever asked for is for me to cut off the barcode off the side of the box.
I usually say that I shred all my documents because I was a victim of identity theft.
They don't have to know the truth, although I'm not condoning flat out lying to them. Just a few half truths here and there makes the wheels a little turn a little bit easier.
Thanks guys, been real help. I'll go for the K800 since now the K790 prices are out and only $25 sets them apart, though I won't use so much the 3G, I don't mind investing in it this small amount just in case.
Cheers !

Brad, comparing the W810 and the new K800, how does the sound quality in mp3 compare?...I gather the mp3 player is more or less the same?
I can get either one for the sameish price! and then for me the sound and camera quality be deciding factors.. You got any comment to share?.. thanks.

The K750i sound was identical to the W800i and the hardware in the W810i is similar also. The K800i should sound the same or better than the W810i as it is newer and the camera and screen on the K800i should be enough to tempt you. The K800i is a great phone and I would not be surprised if it were the best selling phone of the year in a similar fashion to the K750i which sold extremely well.

I talked to SonyEricsson CS last year before I bought my P910a.
The CS rep stated that all Sony Ericsson phones have a 12-month warranty from date-of-purchase, and 15-month warranty from date of manufacture. So even if you bought the phone on eBay, and even if you can't find the receipt, they can track the manufacture date from the IMEI, and give you warranty service based on that.
I also asked about overseas models (was going to get a P910i from overseas). He told me that even if it's overseas model, as long as it's within 15 months of manufacture, they can take care of it. But overseas model will take longer to repair. I don't know if he's 100% sure of what he was talking about, so I bought the P910a (US model) from amazon.com (reputable retailer with a normal and trackable invoice) just to play it safe.

If you want to skip having a dedicated camera. Then I would deffly suggest the k790/k800 with the 3.2 mega pixle camera. I have the w810, which has the 2 mega pixle camera, just like the k750. Remember these are only phones, so the zoom and other camera features are not that extensive. I'm currently using my phone to delay purchasing a digital camera, but i will have to eventually.

Exactly, was going to get me a separate digicam and was looking but after checking out the shots from the K800i, have put plans on present hold. All the more so worth the cybershot label.
Time to buy my K800i, any places you find those phones cheap ?
I need it to be online shops that ships from the US. I'm not a resident, but I have a buddy there who will grab the shipment and send it here.
Ebay is the lowest priced K800i I've found but I'm kinda scared from scamers, but if anyone found an honest Ebay store I'll take my chances .
Thanks again !

Basically if an eBay shop has thousands or tens of thousands of feedbacks and is a powerseller with 98+% positive ratings then it should be allright. I bought a phone from an eBay shop before and it came quickly with no problems at all.
