Does the N80 support .sis files????

I was under the impression that .sis files were symbian files. And that the N80 ran off a symbian operating system.

this new nokia has some copyright managmenet included so only digitaly signed .sis file can be installed.

i think this can be disabled in some right managmenet options in your nokia.

@Kamanchi, are you familiar with the fact that the N80 runs a NEW version of the symbian OS and ALL old .sis applications and games WONT run on the N80... ofcourse if you do know that and it still does not install then plz ignore this post.

That's the major point that this thread misses.. :)

I'm guessing there are at least 2,000 apps for S60 v2
I'm guessing that there are around 20 apps for S60 v3

So there's a 99% chance that the .sis file wont work. v3 phones also recognize "sitx" extension, which makes things a little less confusing.

Just to help a little further, the Series 60 V3 (Third Edition) catalog of available software can be found here (http://my-symbian.com/s60v3/software/) at the my-symbian website, its the only place I know that show most, if not all, available software currently for Series 60 Third Edition.

yea u guys hit the nail on the head all phones barring nokia n91, e series, n80,92, 93 , n71 72 and 73 are all s60v2 and earlier phones. They have huge support available in terms of applications and themes /games.

S60v3 phones are based on a newly developed codebase ( evolutionary one ) and requires files to be recompiled for this platform. Old s60v2 stuff will not work on this new platform

Your very welcome, but for all of us going through the forum and reading this, can you tell us the problem was from the application being for the old version of the symbian operating system or was it some problem with your N80??

Your very welcome, but for all of us going through the forum and reading this, can you tell us the problem was from the application being for the old version of the symbian operating system or was it some problem with your N80??

It was a problem with the N80 not accepting .sis files.

The first problem i had was transfering my contacts from my 6630 to the N80. It wouldnt let me install the datamover.sis file to do this.

The I was trying to install facewarp. Just for a bit of a laugh and this wouldnt install either due to the N80 not accepting the.sis files.

So to answer your question the problem was the change in Symbian operating systems not the N80. But then you could look at it as being a fault with the N80 not supporting old symbian software. Can you imagine Windows XP not running an old version of WORD??????

Well... the N80 accepts .sis files but the ones created for the new Operating System. Yes, the new OS wont accept old applications which is the main downfall for the N80 and other new N and E series and the 3250 as well, but all the companies are now re-compiling the applications to work with the N80, check the link I submitted above for the list of available applications... its just a matter of time till all the applications will be available for the N80 :)

It's not necessarily a downfall, because afterall the new OS makes things safer and more secure for us...it's just growing pains;)

What has happened to the new S60V3 software????? People were so sure that the rate of software production would be high, yet very few applications are available!

right now there are around 100 available and companies are just recompiling the old editions to third edition.. its a matter of time till all the applications and games are available for the series 60 third edtion, but about the new programs is what made me think from your post, they are SOO many programs out there for old versions, what NEW application could they make?
