Hello i was about top buy the R1 but then i saw that sony are bringing a new digital slr out (DSLR Alpha 100).
should i wait for this camera to be released before buying the R1? i take it that the DSLR Alpha 100 will be a better camera and will be replacing the R1?
cheers

The cameras are a bit different. The R1 is a camera trying to be an SLR. It is the first fixed lens camera to have a full size sensor. The fixed lens however is very good, if you need range of 24mm-120mm (35mm equiv). However the ISO at 1600 is dodgy, canon are better. And it is pricey. If you need RAW pictures it can take a while to save them as well.

The Alpha is Sony's first SLR, it differs to the R1 as the sensor is a CCD not a CMOS as the R1. I am not sure how good it is unfortuinately.

They are both good resources!

cheers so do you think it would be wise to wait a month to see wait for the reviews of the DSLR Alpha 100 instead of going out and buying the R1 now?

If you are happy with the shortcoming of the R1 the camera is very good especially if the lens is what you want - Sony are taking a massive cost hit with the R1 lens as it is that good. But do remember you are constrained by the lens. The price does worry me as it is high and in the end it is not an SLR.

I would wait for a while to see the Alpha 100 reviews and the cost of lenses.

The best way to sum up is that there is a compromise between flexibility that can be gained with an SLR and cost as the R1 is a cheaper overall package.

The R1 fascinates me as it is trying to create a market for people that do not want the cost associated with an SLR but delivers SLR performance, not many of these type of camera exist. But I am not convinced by the R1, wait for the Alpha reviews - the camera could be a winner!

Interesting, well it all depends on you basically and I guess you are not so inclined towards very high end features so you should get a R1. But do check out the Canon's digital Rebel series of SLR's which are available at very similar costs to the R1. (old ones)
