That isn't correct as far as I know.

I certainly didn't notice the cover being removable.

Yes, the cover is removable, you have to use something small like a paper clip or mini screwdriver to release 2 catches near the bottom of the phone, after that, the cover snaps of like any typical nokia cover. someone on ebay was selling 6600 covers:

They are quite easily removed actually.

go to www.my6600.net and in the forums there is a guide how to take it off.
