Hi everyone...
I have a P910(2yrs old) and a K750(1yr old)... Now I want to buy a new phone and I do not have any budget problems... I love taking pictures from my K750 and listining to music(I use similar headphones from Sony as the Walkman Series)...
The phones I m concerning are:
M600, P990, K790, W850 or W950
M600- Its now available at reasonable price but I have doubts about its sound quality and performance... Also W950 looks better... I love taking pictures with my K750 and would miss the camera if I buy this...
http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=global&lc=en&ver=4001&template=pp1_1_1&zone=pp&lm=pp1&pid=10385
P990 - This is going to be the best phone available and it does not have any major drawbacks... The only problem is that it doesn't look good and its screen quality is not as outstanding as K790/W850...
http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=global&lc=en&ver=4001&template=pp1_1_1&zone=pp&lm=pp1&pid=10336
K790 - It has one of the best display in the market today and its quite compact and easy to use that all other phones at present... Also it has a 3.2 Megapixel camera which is quite good... Video recording doesn't matter to me as we are still far away from getting good video recording from our camera phones... Even the N93 is just so so... The problem with this phone is that is has many limitations and lack of options only when compared with touchscreen phones like SE P-Series...
http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=global&lc=en&ver=4001&template=pp1_1_1&zone=pp&lm=pp1&pid=10409
W850 - Almost similar to K790... The difference being, walkman series, slider, camera not as good as K790, its not going to be officially launched in India and it would be costing around Rs 30,000 initially... This phone may not be the best looking phone ever but as far as looks goes its my favorite...
http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=global&lc=en&ver=4001&template=pp1_1_1&zone=pp&lm=pp1&pid=10447
W950 - It also doesn't have camera and Wifi but is better than P990 in many ways... Better headphones, slim and good looking, no need for flip keypad, etc... But its not launching anytime soon...
http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=global&lc=en&ver=4001&template=pp1_1_1&zone=pp&lm=pp1&pid=10391
So the above mentioned are my thoughts... What do u think...
My first choice is K790 but I expect it to be launched somewhere around 15th August... The next is P990 which should be available by mid July...
The M600 is now available and I can go for that too but I want to know ur suggestions, should I wait for few months or not...
Thanks in advance...

If you really really need UIQ, then hold out for the P990...
Otherwise, I would go for the K790;)

That is the main problem... I have had all the P-Series phones before and loved them... I have also had T610, K700, K750 and W800, and loved them too... But now the choice is more difficult...

if you want the battery to last as much as possible then dont get the K790, it only lasts for 7 hours.

The E70 is very similar to the N80 and has better battery life, could that be an option?
But out of your choices, get the k790 and when the P990 comes out the M600 should come down in price a bit and you can get that. It will have same performance as the p990 but without the WiFi and camera. If you are going to change between phones regularly then that should suffice.

Fair enough regarding the touchscreen, I personally am indifferent when it comes to the use of touchscreen phones. I am in the same position as you when deciding new phones and I think that the E61 is more useful than the P990.
I agree that for the second phone that you should get the k790/k800, or a Nokia alternative the N73 - size and form is very similar to k790 + N73 has that HUGE screen.
I am proposing the Nokia handsets since they show there are valid alternatives to SE, but a P990/k790 combo is a very good choice! One worry I have with the P990 is the size, it is big and the E61 does everything that you would want (albeit without the camera, but you would have the k790 so that would not be a worry!)

Hi crazyze, the E61 looks doesnt impress me and its width is too much... I know its slim but I have small fingers and anything wider than P910 would not fit my hand... Also, now I wont be considering any non camera phone...
The N73 is 2good on specs but again doesnt impress me... The only Nokia phones that excite me are N80(poor battery life) and N93(at that price I would spend a little extra and buy P990)
For now most of u have said K790 and P990... Ok, now which one should I choose...
No one has any comments on W850??? I really like that phone too... The only problem being it wont be launched in India and is still far away from launch...

As far as price goes, I dont have any problems, but the phone should be able to justify it and the K800 was not able to do so even at $4680Hk...one of me mates has a phone that he got last year sometime for AU$1,499 and the battery lasts for 12 hours and it has a 2MP camera etc. i have e-mailed him about it and when he replies i will forward the information on to you. :)

Exactly! Just because it's old or late, doesn't mean it can't get the job done. I mean, certainly, the P990i's specs won't be OUTdated when it does finally come. I mean, 2MP camera, WiFi (albeit just Wireless-B), UIQ...still quite impressive.

By outdated I dont mean its specs as such... Specs wise the P990 is still ok... though it would have been better if it had an even better screen and camera, like the K800...
By outdated i also mean its performance... I was not imprressed with its somewhere around 200mhz speed when the phone was announced... And now after one year it still has the same RAM and Processor... I dont think the phone will be much faster than P910 (I feel the P910 is too slow:( )...

LOL because it's Sony and they're too busy delaying the PS3:p
Well, to be fair, the P990 isn't necessarily supposed to be the groundbreaking upgrade to the P900/P910. Afterall, if SE had meant that to be, if would've been named P1000 or something, not something in the same numerical range.

i lived with a host family during my stay and they said they are very lucky to have a TV. and i thought to myself, their tv is only a 34cm CRT screen. i was hoping to buy some cheap dvds over there but i couldnt find any because most people dont have dvd players. that family had a total of 6 people and they share a phone that i bought them for a present during my stay, before that they didnt have a phone.
i love the street foods while i was there and i spent at the maximum AU$2 for my breakfast and AU$5 for my dinner. it was great, i bought a whole table of cooked food with that much. the most i spent on food was AU$100 and that was a feast. i spent it just before i left. i wanted to thank my host family for letting me stay there with hospitality.
now you think about it, for someone that spends US$600 alone on a phone over there, that would mean they're really rich for an average indian.
AU$1 = 34.8 Rupees and US$1 = 46.7 Rupees
it was marked as a positive comment, nothing bad about it.

U got a point there crazyze but the P990's high price would mean sensible if it was launched back in Jan or Feb, now it should not be more than US $700 at max...
Thanks everyone, I liked reading all ur comments and there is still some time for K790 and P990 to be released so ur free to give me more comments...

hgautam,
yes, im sure there are many many rich indians. every country has its poor, middle class and rich people. but the majority people in india would be below middle class? i think you would agree with me on that. i am sorry if you are hurt by my comment and i wont say anything more about this topic.
back on track. theres a huge discussion about the 990 here (http://forum2.mobile-review.com/showthread.php?t=41771) you may be able to find some of the answers that you seek.

The thing is the P990 is still generating HUGE excitement, despite the phone being soooo late, people still want it, maybe even more people than if it was released in Jan/Feb! Hence why I think price may be high.
SE may also want the high price so that not many people buy the phone. Reason for this is that the phone is not going to be of high production such as k800i. If demand is huge, SE may have a manufacturing problem.
(But I doubt this would be the case!)

If the P990 is 600GBP, WHAT THE HECK is SE thinking?? It's not THAT great a phone that you can charge over a thousand!
9500 was £580gbp and much lower spec only a year and a bit ago....so I think its priced right (free would be better but then it'd end up being as functional as a Sagem)

When I ordered it at launch from a UK webstie, I only paid a little over 600USD.
I'm curious as to why there was such a price jump from one region to the next.

There is a good news and a bad news... The good news is that the P990 was released yesterday and I bought one too... The bad news is, I m disappointed... The sound sucks... Its too low and has a very bad quality... Its nowhere as good as my old P910... The sound in the headphones is also poor...:(

?I never said i bought it for 38k. I bought it for 35k with bill the day it was officially launched here. I agree i should hav waited but i was to eager to buy it. By the way, i was insane as it was also available for 30k without bill.

Till now the 3 major drawbacks I have found are:
- Sound
- Slow Speed
- Some problems with the UI
I had a talk with SE service center and they said the new firmware improves the sound... Will get it done soon once I have windows service pack 2 and made a backup... In future I expect some performance and UI problems to be taken care of... Other than these three things the phone is excellent and does not have any other major drawbacks...

hMmm...would any of you guys be interested in selling your phones??
Maylee, The w850 is awesome. I told my wife to get it, but she said she can wait. It fits nicely in your hand, not too big and it seems to be just the right weight. It's going for 800 sgd here.
msyang20, what you want to buy my n93? ;)

I have a P990, actually its the second one as the first was really rubbish, this one however is better, I would rate it as only rubbish as opposed to really rubbish.
very awkward to operate, crashes, hangs, gives access denied' messages requiring a re-start to clear. Super slow and almost impossible to bond on bluetooth.
SE's answer to all these snags is 'go to pdate and re-install the software'. Doing this 3 or 4 times a day is not really practical!!!!!
I met a person at a Xmas party, he noticed my phone and told me everything that was wrong with it before I told him! I was amazed and asked him how he knew? Did he have one? GOD NO was his reply, he is a hardware tester for one of the biggest mobile networks in the UK. They test all phones the network wants to release and other hardware that is used behind the scenes.
He told me that general opinion of 990 is very low and it is a sub-standard item.
So make your choice but don't choose the P990 you will be disapointed for sure.

Not only that, I am confronted with a bunch of atrocious, ignorant and non-caring service support personnel here in the Philippines. I've sent letters to the SE Phil. president and no response from him.
Anybody know an SE higher-up there in Sweden and his email address? I'm thinking of starting WWIII.
My 990 is crap!

The p990 is just not a good phone - it's buggy. I think SE either botched up the software or hurriedly released it. I knew the design was old and the features are too - but I had hoped that they'd at least get the software right!
After using one for around a month - I sold it. My p910 was better than this. It's even older but IT WORKED and is relatively bug-free.
