Is it still okay to buy a N70? Iv been reading the various comments about this phone in this forum - and the conclusion is that it's slow, and it hangs sometimes. Is it still okay to buy one? What can I do to prevent it from being slow and hanging?
Thanks.

If the firmware is v5 and the price is right, its still a good purchase.
If the N72 is available and cheaper, get that instead.

If you don't need UMTS/3G support (and the features that go with it).
I had a v5 N70 for a couple of weeks, it never crashed, and while it wasn't the fastest thing in the world, it wasn't any worse than other S60 smartphones.

I'm sorry I've said this in another thread but, what is it with people and the speed of their phones? Are our lives that full that we need a phone that opens the gallery before we can even think about it, or take more then a fraction of a second to go into the menu.
I've had a 6600, 6670 and now the N70 and yes the phones have got faster in doing things and no my life hasn't slowed down. The more toys you want in your phone the slower it will be.
Get over wanting mega fast phones. IT'S A PHONE.

I hear you, and you have a point. But in my own opinion, like myself for example, I need a phone to be fast too. Not as fast as a PC - but fast enough that I dont have to wait for it to show something I want to see rightaway. There's this like 2 seconds for example when browsing contacts in a K700 - it gets that my hands are like scrolling faster than the phone can respond. Once or twice that happens is tolerable, but to have that everytime, is getting irritating. In a 6680, another example, when you push the menu button or when opening a picture - there's like half a second lag, when in a 6630 there's none. Of course, not everybody feels irritated about this like I do, and I understand that.

i agree with brad.. n70 is now a very reliable piece of mobile engineering not the fastest but it does not crash and with bl5c extended batteries can easily do 3 days with moderate use. its not that far behind and u are better off with it till s60v3 matures in terms of application support ( MAJOR FRUSTATION THAT )

Mrs Dynamoo has an N70 and it's alright I guess, but those menus are fiddly and the screen's not so good. I think she perfers her 9500 to be honest.

I concur... the N70's not's the fastest, but it's quite good and reliable, and it's far from being obsolete yet. Maybe when the N73 or 93 arrives, maybe...
cheers!

I'm a bit naughty when it comes to phones. I use http://www.gsmarena.com for lots of info on phones as was as this site and if say I was after a Nokia I would look on the Nokia page and take my pick from there, then as soon as it is pushed off that main page and ends up on the second page then I know it's time for a change.

There's so many mistakes on the GSM Arena comparison pages; I'd only ever use it as a vague guide.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I just found out now that the N72, the closest similar design to the N70, doesnt have 3G. My dad ordered his N70 this morning.

I am using N70 for almost a month. So far i don't find it slow except while opening gallary it takes 2-3 seconds and while taking pictures and recording video it takes bit time to save them depending on the size and quality of the video and the battery backup is low it does'nt last for more than 50 hrs with optimal use. So that is the only drawback which i find otherwise i find it a perfect handset with typical smartphone device I am totally satisfied with it.
But for onething i would like to blame nokia. The processor used for N70 is same as 6680 (32-Bit ARM 220MHz). Nokia should have chipped an advanced processor for N70 that would have overcome the above mentioned drawbacks and they should have inserted a more powerful battery so that if someone going for long travel can listen to music and watch videos for longer duration.
I hope the next firmware release might overcome some of the drawbacks that i mentioned

One more question please.
Which is the nicer color, the Ivory Pearl N70? Or the Silver N70?

The Ivory N70 is more expensive by around 50$.

My dad doesn't keep many photos on his phone anyway, as soon as he gets home, he transfers them to his computer. So opening maybe only 3 to 4 photos at a time will make it faster?

The delay is only while saving photo/videos, loading photos first time and opening gallary menu. Opening photo is always fast no matter how many photo resides. I recently upgraded to 1GB and still it opens photos faster

Go for silver color, Ivory panel looks lousie, and the good news is new handsets are coming with a brand new panel which has black outer panel and silver inner panel, go for that, its looks are amazing, and not only that this new handset is shipped with 128MB memory card instead of 64 so make sure you get this latest one:)
