3G phones banned in anti-porn drive

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has banned 3G mobile phones after a complaint from his wife and her friends about receiving pornography on them.

"I have written to the Minister of Telecommunications to delay the use of certain mobile phones," Hun Sen told an assembly of Buddhist monks in Phnom Penh Friday. "We can wait 10 more years until we have managed to improve morality in society."

Hun Sen, a one-eyed former Khmer Rouge soldier who has been in charge for the past 20 years, said his wife had signed a petition asking him to act against the phones, which can send video as well as still images.

Sexual violence and abuse are common in the war-scarred Southeast Asian nation.

Cambodia's first 3G (third-generation) mobile network opened earlier this year, but few people can afford the phones.

Pornography??!! I have a 3g phone on 3g signal, and has never recieved any porno content yet.. Am I missing something?

How sad is that Cambodia has a 3G network while the U.S. still doesn't have one (a nation-wide UMTS one anyways).

In any case, how stupid is it that the PM can just make laws on a whim...to hold back technology just because of a few isolated events UGH

hi i am ALi from US .. well My uncle sent a cell phone to my cousin woh is in pakistan ! Its nokia 6280 he first unlock it to use it there! tell me why is that so ?? and from which web site we can find software of Nokia 6280or any set software mean cell phone software not that cd software which comes in pack its firm ware!

Now, that's a good point, and shows the short sightedness of the PM. I'm not referring to his 'typical pirate-eyed' looks.

Which brings us to the first, not only 3g phones be banned but everthing that can distribute and view pornography.

I think they have a BitTorrent Client for S60 now somewhere, porn sharing already clogs networks so heck why not restrict everything and the whole internet might be faster in cambodia. even though photography including cameraphones were banned last time i went, it would be pretty clever actually to stream out from say a strip joint or something. With all the prostitution in Asia let alone HK you could setup your own pay porn site with a webserver and a cameraphone. Maybe Cambodia got it right or maybe the country has something to hide.
