1) Plextor PX-760A
Plextor regains the title of best burner with the PX-760A. Unlike most drives that have 16x speeds for DVD+R media, this drive can reach 18x speeds with the same media. It also claims to support 8x DVD+R dual layer, although compatible media is hard to find. DVD-R is support at 16x for recordable and 6x for rewritable and dual layer. Overall a very strong performer.

2) LG Electronics GSA-4167B
LG Electronics' GSA-4167B has performance that is very close to that of the Plextor drive, but at a lower cost. In addition to the traditional DVD media supported, the drive also supports the DVD-RAM format. Speeds for DVD-R dual layer media are also slower at 4x, but in general the drive does a good job at keeping up. Another bonus is the cost of the drive being below the Plextor.

3) LiteOn SHM-165H6S
LiteOn's SHM-165H6S is probably the best performing drive that also supports the Lightscribe compatible media for burning labels directly to the disc. While the drive does only feature 4x support for both DVD+/-R dual layer media, the drive does offer exception speeds for the remaining media types. It also supports the DVD-RAM media for those requiring it.

4) Samsung SH-S162L
One of the greatest benefits to the Samsung SH-162L is how environmentally friendly it is. It is one of the best performing drives that also complies with the RoHS directives from Europe for reducing toxic metals. Although the drive lacks good performance for dual layer media, the performance with the other DVD and CD formats is quite strong and it has some of the best access times.

5) Sony DRU-820A
For a good all around general purpose DVD burner, the Sony DRU-820A is a good choice. While it isn't the fastest at any one particular type of media, it also isn't lagging behind other burners. The only area that might be of concern is the CD-R writing times. The drive states it can run up to 48x speeds, testing was only able to achieve a slower 40x speed.

What were they smoking? How about NEC...
I think I'd rather trust AnandTech for my computer bits... leave about.com for recipes and anatomy ;)

I own an LG Electronics GSA-4167B ("Super-Multi") - actually got it a while ago, perhaps 6 months. I concur it's an excellent DVD/CD drive - no problems yet. In a "price doesn't matter" setup Plextor would get my vote but in all other cases I'd get the LG... it's so much cheaper and as the post points out, you'll need to spend more money to burn at that speed on media...

Anyone who uses packet-writing to write to optical media (Nero, Windows CD burning etc.) a lot should get the LG, regardless of price. The ability to use DVD-RAM disks means no waiting at all when burning in this way - it's truely like normal storage, instant write and delete like a HDD or Flashdrive.

What about Burn4Free? Ilike that, since it is free and easy to use. And easy to get that on sharewareguide.net/Audio-Multimedia/CD-DVD-Burners/burn4free.html
